Flaming Pie has aged very well - 20 year anniversary

BJ, are you sure Joey wasn't talking about OTG, which he referred to in his post? ETA: Probably not, since the Steve Miller songs were on Flaming Pie. I disagree with him too, btw.
_____________________________________________ I was actually looking more at Joey's 2nd paragraph specifically talking about Flaming Pie. I do get how some albums won't appeal to everyone. Some people do like Off the Ground a lot but I don't personally put it up with the other 5 albums (including Flaming Pie) I mentioned. While many of the songs on OTG were good, it seemed like something was missing in the performance on quite a few of the tracks. Vocally it was like Paul was trying too hard on songs like Peace in the Neighborhood, C'Mon People, Biker Like an Icon etc. I did really like Hope of Deliverance, Golden Earth Girl, and Lovers That Never Were. Even in Solo albums that I don't personally rate among Paul's best, there are always a few tracks that I love. I need to revisit "New" actually. There were quite a few songs that I liked on it and now that a good amount of time has gone, I wonder how I'll feel about it at this point.

By car or plane? That's a long drive.
Car. It's 440 miles.
That's like Minneapolis to Kansas City. I actually did that once. Never again.

20 years ago, oh wow where does the time go i remember the release like yesterday, still think of it as a "recent" album!!
Have just seen this... (Your Go Fund Me) I've actually suffered from the same condition although mine is not quite that badly mishapen, didn't know there was a name for it. Poor little tyke...he's a very beautiful little boy. My mum had to use her hands to try and mold my skull, a helmet is most definitely the better option. Just to let you know...if one turns their head very suddenly, with this condition, something about the muscle against the skull, you can get a very sharp stabbing pain, feeling a bit like a knife was just stuck in your head. Over time, you eventually learn not to turn your head so suddenly, to avoid the pain... All the best to you and your precious baby. (((River))) Longer hair does wonders to cover it up. There's a Flaming Pie logo in the emojis now? Very cool

Already? Wow the time has flown. The album is a latter day career highlight for Paul.

If I remember correctly, it was hailed at the time as Paul's "comeback" album (for the nth time in his career...lol). OTG was very poorly received, both critically & commercially, & The Beatles had just released Anthology to wide acclaim. Looking back, i think the album is a bit over-rated. A lot of 'good' & 'average' songs, but not many high points as in most Macca albums. Also, the 2 clunkers are clearly the Steve Miller songs which should have been left off!
___________________________________________________________ Joey, I respect your opinion but we will have to agree to disagree. In my opinion, Paul Post Wings has had 5 very, very good albums. They are Tug, Flowers, Flaming Pie, Chaos and Maf. Almost every, even masterpiece type albums (even great ones like Sgt. Pepper) will often have a clunker or, to put it better, a couple of lesser quality songs. Sgt. Pepper for example had Within You Without You. It's not that it is a bad song but it didn't really fit the rest of the songs. As much as George Martin tried (he put it as the opening song on side 2 which was smart), it really didn't fit well with the rest of the songs. In fact, John, Paul and Ringo didn't even play on it. Getting back to Flaming Pie, I disagree that "Pie" had a "lot of good and average songs". Again, in my opinion, songs like The World Tonight, Somedays, Young Boy, Calico Skies, Souvenir, Little Willow and Beautiful Night are far better than just good or average. They are very good. Put those songs on Beatle albums that got massive airplay at the time and many of them would be considered classics today. I would put Somedays, Little Willow and Beautiful Night as great songs and every bit as good as Paul's greatest Beatle songs. Yes, Paul as usual, did throw a couple of clunkers on Flaming Pie. The real clunker, in my opinion, is Really Love You where Paul and Ringo are just playing around in the studio. It is basically a "jam session" type song. It doesn't ruin the album for me but in hindsight Paul could have replaced it with another really good song (e.g, Wings on a Nightingale). The rest of the album has what I call "good" album cuts, songs that fit well on the album. They would include The Song We Were Singing (nice opening track), If You Wanna, Heaven on a Sunday, Great Day and the title cut. I understand that Used to be Bad is an average track but to me it does fit well on the album. Flaming Pie is not for everyone and I understand your view. I just have a different point of view. I consider it one of his best Solo albums because of the many very good to classic Macca songs on it.
One of the few Macca albums that have I have viewed more negatively over time. It's a very polished album...too polished. The album lacks "bite" or eccentricity that is found in many Macca albums. I can understand why - it's very Beatley-sounding after Anthology & I believe he recorded a lot of it when Linda was sick. I like 'Beautiful Night', 'Little Willow', 'Calico Skies' & 'Somedays'. But the rest of the songs are not very memorable for me. I never go back to them. Again, they're not bad, but too sterile for my taste. The only songs I dislike are the 2 Steve Miller songs & the Ringo song.

____________________________________________ Joey...you make some excellent points. I understand what you are saying from "Pie" being too polished and not enough "bite" from an "album" point of view. In my opinion, Memory Almost Full for example jells "better" as a complete album than Flaming Pie. From the perspective of individual songs, I think it does contain a lot of very good to great tracks. On top of the ones you list, I also really like Souvenir, Young Boy, Heaven on a Sunday, and The World Tonight. The rest vary from good album tracks (The Song We Were Singing and Great Day) to the rest being as you say...average tracks. I agree that "Pie" was very Bealesque and I miss the more crazy, eccentric Paul that you get on Memory Almost Full. I think the more casuall Paul fan would like "Pie" better than MAF but you and I are more hard core.
