2017 Setlist Speculation Thread

Paul did do a couple of bass lines of "When I'm 64" in Albany a few years ago when a man was brought on stage to propose to his gf. He happened to be 64 and the wording of his proposal was centered around the lyrics

He did Hope Of Deliverance at the first Orlando 2013 show. I was there. I was happy to hear it, but overall, it didn't get much of a reaction. By the 2nd show, it was gone. As far as any setlist changes, I'm betting there will be NOTHING from Flowers In The Dirt. But I predict he adds in a full band version of Fixing A Hole and/or Penny Lane (due to Sgt Pepper anniversary reissue), at the expense of other songs. Not sure which. Beyond that, I expect the same old setlist.
It seems he did Hope Of Deliverance once to see how the audience would react, and since it wasn't the reaction he wanted, he decided not to do it anymore. When I'm 64 is from Sgt. Pepper. I wonder why he hasn't done it yet? Now is the time.
He did "Hope of Deliverance" the entire 1993 tour. The show I went to it got pretty good reception especially for one of his solo songs.

Orlando a few years back you could hear crickets after Paul performed it. I was happy to hear it live but only polite applause followed the song

______________________________________________________________ As some of us have said, why should that bother Paul at all. He after all is Paul frikking McCartney. It's all about "challenging" the audience, not always having them adore you. In his career, he has had more applause than practically anyone. Why should it even matter to him. Hope of Deliverance is a very good song. Certainly the fans from South America loved it when he played it (I saw the videos). Maybe the people from South America are more musical than the US or are more open to a varied setlist. They certainly have a greater appreciation for his Solo Career from what I can see. Just got back from a Beatles' Festival in Louisville KY. It took a Band from Columbia to be playing Post Beatles' Paul (even Solo stuff).

That's because he IS TOO DAMN STUBBORN to play it in the regions he's celebrated for that song. Biggest recent European solo hit, top 10 in almost all countries, Gold in Germany! That song, 'My Brave Face', 'Once Upon a Long Ago' and 'We All Stand Together', a whole generation over here recognises him mostly for those tracks. If he would've played this and 'My Brave Face' at Pinkpop, the reviews wouldn't have concentrated so much on the lopsided setlist, but only on his voice and the overkill factor.
-
Still to this day I cannot believe he did not play "Temporary Secretary" at Lolapalooza. There was another group playing on a side stage where you can hear a faint club music sound and Paul heard it during and after "Here Today" and said here's one to blow them out of the water: <Queenie Eye>

I would think that if there is any thought of having or asking Elvis Costello to make a guest appearance, it probably would be for the 9/15 Madison Square Garden concert. Those people attending the Newark NJ right before would have the best chance to hear something from FITD. We know that Mr. and Mrs. Elvis Costello (Diana Kroll) are real good friends of Paul. A long shot at best but it would create a lot of buzz for the tour.
I don't want to burst your bubble because I LOVE Elvis and would love seeing him perform with Paul. But I don't see it happening at MSG because EC currently has a September 16th concert scheduled in Colorado. That date is right in between the two MSG shows. Diana made a guest appearance at the first Vancouver show last year on My Valentine, and Elvis and their kids were in the audience, and all of them were back again in the audience for night 2. So that would have been a great night for Elvis to make a guest appearance on stage, but we got Jimmy Fallon instead.

Like I said a few times before, guess his ego need big applause after every song so he can "soak" it all in - lol. I truly believe people outside of the US are definitely more open minded to his solo songs. We both loved the "That Was Me" clip from Paris and the crowd really got into the song. The people in South America love "Hope Of Deliverance" from all the clips I have seen.

Also, out of the 12 times he played 'Ram On' by request after 2010 (when it became an almost set piece that year), only 2 times were in the North America, and we know the ratio North America-elsewhere is like 75/25, hehe.

No doubt the crowds outside the US are not only more likely but more receptive to these sorts of things. I was lucky enough to hear "Ram On" in 2010, and unlike Stevie Riks' video suggests, it sounded GREAT!

____________________________________________________ Thanks for the info "night fish". You are definitely right that it rules out Madison Square Garden. Sounds like you're a big EC fan. Are there any upcoming US Paul shows that coincides well with Elvis's upcoming tour schedule. Madison Square made sense since it is a such a "media" mecca but that doesn't rule out another city even if it is a secondary type one. You would think that Paul and team are always looking for a "guest appearance" to give the tour "added publicity and boost". Nobody would be bigger than EC in my opinion.

Yes, I'm a big EC fan from way back. He's on tour right now through June and July, but none of his July tour dates coincide with Paul's July dates. I think that September date has only been added recently; tickets are not even on sale yet, and it's the only one so far for the fall. So it's possible that he may add some more for Sept. or Oct. which might coincide with Paul being in Brooklyn, LI, NJ or Detroit, but who knows.

_______________________________________________________ I have just seen a few videos (on Paul's Website) from the Flowers in the Dirt era and then later when Elvis joined Paul (and many others) for the Tribute to Linda. They just seem like they really enjoy working together. Let's hope that Elvis is a guest performer at one of Paul's upcoming shows.

Would be awesome and like you said earlier, gives his show a little extra "buzz" media attention.

A few interesting questions were asked at Paul's latest live Q&A. The first one was about the song "ode to a koala bear" slipping into the setlist in Australia. Paul looked intrigued by the suggestion and replied that he hadn't thought about that. Perhaps he will think about it now?

He's probably already forgotten the conversation. That would be about as useless an addition as "Temporary Secretary".
