Midfielder Pavel Nedved has decided to stay with Juventus despite their relegation to Serie B. Juve have been demoted to the Italian second division over their part in the match-fixing scandal. But Nedved, 33, told the club's website: "I never doubted I would stay at Juventus. I don't lack offers, but my family and I are settled in Turin. "I owe a lot to the club and the Agnelli family (who own the club), who have always been close to me." http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/europe/5195000.stm

Ruud is off to Real Madrid. And without a decent midfield to help feed him balls to tap home from inside the six-yard box, he will regret this decision. Imo. anyway. Rooney's value in Fantasy Football should go up a bit now.

Today marks the 40th anniversary of the World Cup final between England and Germany, in the old Wembley Stadium - the one with that (in)famous third goal (and of course, it will hardly surprise you when I say the ball wasn't in! ) Anyway, it was a great game altogether, and England was a worthy champion indeed, with forward Geoff Hurst scoring three goals (including the famous one). Here are the game's dates: England: Banks - Wilson, J. Charlton, Moore, Cohen - Stiles, B. Charlton, Peters - Hunt, Hurst, Ball. Germany: Tilkowski - Höttges, Schulz, Weber, Schnellinger - Beckenbauer, Overath - Seeler, Haller, Held, Emmerich. Referee: Dienst (Switzerland). Goals: 0-1 Haller (12'), 1-1 Hurst (17'), 2-1 Peters (77'), 2-2 Weber (90'), 3-2 Hurst (101'), 4-2 Hurst (120'). London (Wembley), 30 July 1966.

O'Neill named Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill has been named as the new manager of Aston Villa. The 54-year-old takes over from David O'Leary, who was sacked by the Midlands club last month. O'Neill had been away from football for over a year after quitting his position at Celtic in May 2005 to look after his ill wife Geraldine. The former Northern Ireland midfielder has previously managed Wycombe, Leicester and Celtic - where he won the Scottish Premier League three times. John Robertson and Steve Walford also join Villa as assistant manager and coach. O'Neill takes the reigns at Villa Park in time for the club's pre-season tour of Germany and Holland, which begins on Saturday. He was met by over 1,000 fans when he arrived at Villa Park and said he was "overwhelmed" by his reception. "This is a fantastic challenge," O'Neill said. "I am willing and ready to go. "I am well aware of the history of this football club. Trying to restore it to its days of former glory seems a long way away - but why not try? "It is nearly 25 years since they won the European Cup but that is the dream." O'Neill has just over two weeks to prepare for his side's first game of the new Premiership season - against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on 19 August. "There are some funds available to strengthen the squad and I am going to use them," O'Neill added. "I will have to look quickly at how the players are shaping up. I have seen quite a few players from a distance but you don't get to know them properly until you work with them yourself. "There's not a great deal of time but that should not matter too much - life's not ideal like that." Villa chairman Doug Ellis was delighted to have secured O'Neill as the club's new manager. Ellis said: "To me, Martin's passion and ability to motivate players is unsurpassed. "We had three meetings at my home and I've not spoken to anyone else. "We had a dozen applicants but Martin was my choice at the start and here he is today." It is six years since O'Neill last managed in the Premiership with Leicester but he is confident he will settle in quickly. "I have a reasonable idea of what the Premiership is about," O'Neill stated. "The game has probably changed a little bit but I'm not blind to it and I'm hoping to adjust and adapt relatively quickly." "It's absolutely fantastic to be back and with a club such as this. "I have to prove myself to the fans but I'm ready for the job and want to do well. If Aston Villa are going to have a bit of success in the coming years, I'd like to be a part of that." O'Neill, who spent the summer as a pundit for BBC Sport at the World Cup, joins a club in a state of uncertainty. There are four consortia - led by American billionaire Randy Lerner, lifelong fan Michael Neville, deputy judge Nicholas Padfield QC and Sven-Goran Eriksson's agent Athole Still - all vying to buy out current chairman Doug Ellis. All reportedly approved the appointment of O'Neill and his backroom team of Robertson and Walford. O'Neill began his managerial career at Shepshed Charterhouse before moving on to Grantham then Wycombe and finally Leicester, who he guided to four successive top-10 Premiership finishes and three League Cup finals, of which he won two. That got him the job at Celtic, where he won three SPL titles in five years and also took the club to a Uefa Cup final. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/a/aston_villa/5246190.stm I'm stunned.

Predictions Game? I'm planning on having a predictions contest for the UEFA Champions League once the group stage begins in September. All games will take place in midweek (Tuesdays and Wednesdays). I feel this would be the best to play as the matches are spread out nicely and it involves the big clubs in Europe. I know that there's some interest in both the English Premier League and the German Bundesliga. Both leagues kick off this coming weekend (11-13 August) and - tbh - they're the only two that interest me enough to have predictions games with. Anyone interested in weekly predictions for either league? As for the EURO2008 qualifyers... they don't really interest me. So many "minnow" teams that do nothing for me. And different sets of fixture lists, I wouldn't know how to score. We could go the whole way, but the process lasts for approx 16 months (Aug 2006 to Nov 2007 - LINK) I prefer to wait until the finals in June 2008.

I'll be predicting, same as always
-
I'm in for any predictions game you may come up with... Champions League, Premier League, Bundesliga, Primera División, Serie A... you name it! How will the point system work this time?
-
I vote for Champions League

I would participate in the champions league predictions-game!

Well, he will have David Beckham.

If Ruud was known as a good header of the ball, I would definately agree. But I can hardly think of any goals he's scored in the air. van Nistelrooy, Cassano, Ronaldo, Raul, Robinho, Baptista... six forwards! Although Robinho and Baptista could go in midfield. I just think Real Madrid should've gone for a midfielder instead of another striker. Not that I'm complaining, mind you. well... I'm complaining on behalf of ManU because I'd like to see a team challenge Chelsea this season. Liverpool looks to be the team with the best chance.

Well, I'm a Real Madrid supporter but I think they went crazy a long time ago about the people they sign.

Predictions Game: Premiership and Bundesliga Each league will have it's own seperate set of standings since it's understandable that not everyone follows both leagues with equal interest. Competition will be monthly. As soon as one month ends, the standings leader will declared winner for that month. All slates will start fresh as we enter a new month. NOTE: If a full set of fixture listings overlaps end of current month/start of new month, the entire set of matches will count towards the ending month. Yes? Die Bundesliga usually plays on weekends, although it looks like they're going back to playing one match on Friday, six on Saturday and two on Sunday. Very rarely do they play in midweek. Predictions Scoring: 1 point for correct result (win/draw) 2 points for correct goal difference/margin of win 3 points for exact score Premier League is mainly on weekends, the usual schedule having seven matches on Saturday, two on Sunday and one on Monday. Midweek is occasionally played on Tuesday's and Wednesdays. Once the Premiership sides begin advancing in the FA Cup, weekend matches have to be rescheduled and these usually are played in midweek. It gets very confusing at times. Predictions Scoring: 1 point correct result (win/draw) 3 points exact score (This may change if others request it) I'll try and post upcoming matches 2-3 days in advance. Open to everyone interested. I'll go over the UEFA Champions League predicitons game as the tournament nears in September.
