Set List critique

Well, you would have thought so although to be fair many of those songs were probably well over a year old when he came to release them. But I do agree that Paul had the ideal opportunity nearly 20 years ago to really shake up his set-list in favour of his recent work. It would be an interesting experiment though if he played a concert that didn't feature any Beatles or Wings related material at all.

He doesn't have to throw away all the Beatles tunes in favor of newer material. He can do a few of his signature Beatles songs no problem...just not have those overweighted. Or...as I have said for years when he does 2 nights in one city, try shaking it up & advertise one night as heavy Beatles setlist (current) & the 2nd night can be solo Paul night. I bet a lot more people would go to both shows. (I'm not talking those 1st timers)

Why not suggest three shows a day and kill him off completely?
Given his age, Paul does well to get through one show let alone two. A friend of my neice's is a well known UK artist and he's told her just how hard it is to perform on stage like the London O2 Arena. Its literally like performing in a sauna and is very tiring and uncomfortable. It would be no different for Paul, other that it would be even harder as he's a lot older. And mixing up the songs between two shows might sound good in theory but in practice its just more songs that Paul has to contend with remembering. Paul is doing just fine. He doesn't need to do more shows and he doesn't need to change them. Personally I have no interest in seeing Paul live again (I got caught out in 2011 when I got bored with hearing much the same material as I did two years earlier) so I'm happy to leave a vacant seat for someone who hasn't seen Paul live before or someone who doesn't mind hearing the same old songs.

I never suggested him doing 2 shows in one day. I said when he does 2 nights in one city. He's done that in more than a few places in the US.

Sorry, you are correct, I'm just so use to Paul's UK shows where he plays just one night in one city.

I know - he could do like at the Kaiserkeller - play 2 hours of Beatles, rest 1/2 hour, play 2 hours of Wings, rest 1/2 hour, then play 2 hours of solo McCartney!

The Usa leg is upcoming! Will play Paul new stuff? Or the setlist will be the same of South American leg?
I hope to hear one day this songs: "I wanna hold your hand", "Martha my dear"(Perfect with the brass section), "Rocky Raccoon" and "Maxwell Silver hammer", just to speak about Beatles songs never performed live..

Now that we're only 2 days away from the new US leg of the Freshen Up tour, it will certainly be interesting to see if Paul adds any new songs (including additional Egypt Station songs) to the Set.
In my opinion we have a better chance of Paul "adding" a couple of his classic Beatle songs that he's done before like Penny Lane and A Day in the Life. Both songs are iconic and fit the overall theme of playing signature Beatle songs and the 70's hits.
As far as Egypt Station songs, I think maybe fans will get "I Don't Know" as an addition. He certainly has played "I Don't Know" quite a few times at Soundchecks. My gut feel is that will be it as far as Egypt Station additions. I also think "Back in Brazil" was only an addition for the South American audience.
As we all know, Paul has always loved performing live for the "fun and adoration" from the fans. At almost 77, that is what drives him to still do full tours. I think it could be that simple... having fun and staying in touch with his fans. The other factor is that Paul wants to play his instruments on tour. He can do the overwhelming majority of his current setlist songs (both singing and playing) in his sleep. Relearning a bunch of older non-hit solo or Wings' songs would be way too much work at his age. As long as his health is good and the setlist is "easy" for him I'm not surprised he is still touring. Adding the 3 or 4 new songs from his latest album like he did last year is plenty enough additions for him and staying with the staples he's been doing over the last 3-5 years makes it relatively easy. I don't expect much more than that with this new Freshen Up leg in America.

I’ve always wanted to hear “What You’re Doing” but that ain’t gonna happen!

I think it would make a great opener and vocally it is not particularly challenging.

I'm sure that is part of it but a major part is also that he simply wants to make money. Thats why he's always touring the US and never the UK. We've got relatively smaller venues so any chance of Paul 'performing live for the "fun and adoration" of the (British) fans' is well off the radar. I haven't quoted the relevant part of your post but I am in complete agreement with you as to why there won't be too many additions (if any) to the set. Even just a handful of new songs in the set would be alot of hard work which really he doesn't have to do. The shows will be just as well received if he simply keeps to the well rehearsed set he's been playing this year.
Personally I would be happy with a Beatles-free set or even a Wings-free set for that matter. A set just consisting of songs since 2000 would actually be fine with me.

I have to disagree - I think it would be too high in parts for him.

I keep hoping he'll do a show with about 10 Beatles songs and featuring Confidante, People Want Peace, Do It Now, Friends to Go, Wanderlust, Run Devil Run and That Was Me. But then I also keep entering the Publishers Clearinghouse.

I'll vote for that show with a few changes to his solo stuff. A couple of those you picked just aren't concert songs. I'd pick Appreciate, Hunt You Down along with a few others. I agree that That Was Me would be a good one to add.

I would still be OK with it.

As I feared, according to setlist.fm when checking the set list for the New Orleans concert tonight, "Yesterday" is no longer a part of his concert.

Its been played at every show since the 70's. This idea that so many people at his shows are first timers which is why his show is so Beatle heavy is also nonsense. The man has been touring non stop since 2002, and also 89-90, and 93. Thats a lot of gigs in 30 years. Most shows Ive been to, the people around me have seen him multiple times, or at least once.
Its been the same tributes since 2002, the same stories more or less since 2002, the same closer since 2011, and the same opener since 2016. Nothing Fresh, nothing new, all old. He had 2 months off, and couldnt find the time to reahearse and insert ONE new song from ANY decade into the set. Embarrassing.

I don't know why he won't sing more of his songs that he wrote from that last 20-30 years. His current voice may be better suited for them.
I agree with you Maccaroni1974. I am tired of hearing about 1st timers.

agree, but there really are still so many people that still have never seen him, for whatever reason, no matter how many times he has toured. I have one friend that goes to lots of concerts and he's still on her "list" of people to see. And she's not a millenial.
