Taken in the '50s or early '60s. Church is St. Barnabas where Paul was choirboy.

Cool to see, by comparison to now! Didn't know Paul was a choirboy. I can kinda pictures him in choir robes and that sweet voice.

He first auditioned at another church (maybe Liverpool Cathedral?) but was not accepted!

Hard to believe, is that the one up the hill? I suppose you have a pictures of him in the choir? I really loved when he had the choirboys in Ecce Cor Meum. It was so brilliant.

See old b&w pic - the church there is St. Barnabas. This is Liverpool Cathedral in 2016:

I think the photo is a lot older than that. The absent of traffic and the tram tracks suggests perhaps any date from around 1920's....or perhaps earlier.

You could very well be right. Didn't notice the tram tracks. There is some kind of vehicle there on the right - looks like a small truck. (lorry to you!)

I can't really see it clearly but it looks very old. There's also a load of horse shi......erm muck in the road in front of it which tends to point to a much earlier era. Lovely photo though, however old it is.

Thanks for posting that pic. Was there in 1987 and that Cathedral was huge. My boss back then, took us to his hometown to show us around and have tea and cakes with his mum in her parlour. Looking forward to going again this summer with my friends! Wish I knew about Liverpool Oratorio then.

I don't have a choirboy photo, but in this one, the boys are ringing bells.

I am enjoying the old photos and history here. Thanks.
I remember going to Penny Lane and having a big smile or grin knowing I was there and feeling like I knew the place from photos I saw from anything and everything Beatles and Paul.
This was 2019 before all the COVID stuff.
I tried to absorb it and take it all in.
A trip I wanted to take and thought it would never happen and always be a dream to go.
Now when I see the photos, I see it, notice the changes in the older photos, but still see the character of the place and hear the song.
Good memories. -

Good memories. You're welcome! I got all this stuff from a guy on FB who lives in Liverpool and was a cab driver. He has done a ton of research and was nice enough to share a lot with me. I hope to meet him in August if we can go to the U.K. He said he would drive us to hard-to-get to places (without a car) like Strawberry Field and the Liverpool John Lennon Airport.

@love2travel Lol!! "Sweet voice". The church choir master said Paul would never get in the choir. His voice wasn't good enough. I wonder if he ever lived it down, making that remark
-
@nancy-r It looks like Smithdown Place, at the end of Penny Lane. I was there in 2008. The building standing alone is the shelter in the middle of a roundabout, where pretty nurses sell poppies from a tray. Just nearby was Bioletties where Paul had his hair cut.
