Des Moines Thread - ARCHIVE

That sounds good to me. Maybe as the show date nears and the excitement builds, more people will visit this thread and we can make some firm plans.

Yes,it is walking distance, and since we have a few of you staying there,I think we should meet there,as nothing is planned yet...
I finally heard back from the radio station that thought they might do a pre-concert party. No such luck. They will be broadcasting from the arena 2 hours prior to the show, however. Again, I can't reiterate enough - get there EARLY so you can get in before the show starts! I've been checking out possible meeting places and the problem I've been running into is that nothing stays open all that late on a Thursday night. I have never been to the Savery - looks like they have a bar and/or restaurant that might stay open late? If that's where everyone prefers to meet, it's OK by me. As far as walking distance - it is probably close to 1/2 mile from the arena which is probably as close as you are going to get - I'm not sure if it's connected to the skywalk or not. I can try to find that out though
-
I'm coming from Kansas City, and staying at the Savery as well. I was hoping that I could walk to the arena instead of having to mess with parking my car!!! Oh well.....as long as I get to see Paul!!
(Can't wait)!
-
I'd prefer a meeting before the show, not after. Getting too old for these concerts. Toronto was fabulous last night and you all are in for a fabulous show when Paulie comes to the town where I grew up. I can hardly wait. Seuss, are you saying we need to be the the Arena two hours before the show? Security last night was hit and miss. They were picking some people to wand and pat, but not everyone. I had been playing tourist all day, so I had a camera and checked it. I didn't intend to take pictures inside, so it was no big deal. I had it in my hand when I went through security and gave it to them. I do know some people got them in and Paul saw one person taking his picture and she still has the camera with the picture.

All I know is that when people lined up to get into Green Day it took so long that many missed the first part of the show and were not happy. I might also add that they were certainly not a sell-out as Paul is - maybe 1/2 full. I am NOT about to miss any of Paul. I intend to get there very early as I want to buy any merchandise before rather than after - that's just my usual routine! I think a huge part of the problem is that they do not have many entry doors or something - I'm not sure how tight security will be. I was just thinking that a pre-concert get-together would conflict with folks that wanted to try to see Paul arrive?? Another option might be - there is a Quality Inn right next to the arena (north) that says it has a lounge - maybe that would be a place to meet before the show for those that wanted to? I was a little surprised that there were still rooms available there - figured out-of-towners would have snapped those up as it would be the most convenient - go figure

I did it by Mapquest and I think it said 1 mile. Of course that would be driving and not walking. I'd say that's the furthest it's going to be. I have a map of downtown Des Moines at home that shows the skywalk system. I'll try to remember to take a look and see if the Savery and the arena are connected that way and let you know. If you don't see a post in the next day or 2 - REMIND ME!! I don't have as many brains cells as I used to

Thanks so much Seuss...Your Awesome!!!!

What time do you think is a good time to get to the arena? I heard bad things about the Green Day show too. I want to go in, but merch and be in my seat by the time pre-show starts. Also, do you think it might be wiser to buy merch online? I want to buy it at the show because of the sentimental value. Thanks is advance. hope to see you all there.

Really hard to say how early to get there - I usually go at least 2 hours before so I get in right when the doors open. I imagine that when the show gets a little closer, it will be all over the media about getting there early and what time the arena suggests - if I hear anything I'll let everyone know! As far as merch - I usually buy my stuff at the show - you won't have to pay shipping costs plus there is the sentimental value of knowing you actually got it at the show. I have been known to buy the main thing I want at the show but scope out the rest of the stuff - you can get it cheaper on e-bay later as you know what is authentic tour merch - just a thought
One bad thing in my experience has been that they don't always have everything for sale at every single show which is a bummer - Maccascruff - remember in 2002 when you had to keep buying me the pins from your shows because I couldn't get them at any of the ones I went to???

In Toronto, we met at 4 PM and went over to the venue to line up at 6:15 or so, as it was a short walk. At our entrance, they only had three doors open out of at least a dozen. The show doesn't start on time and I didn't care for Hellraiser. I'm going shopping during Hellraiser as I was told there were no lines then. I have all of my merchandise, but somebody wants me to buy them a program at either Des Moines or Denver. Maybe 4 PM at the Quality Inn lounge? We had people who did the limo and then came back to the Loose Moose. I leave for Des Moines on October 20 and will have limited access to the internet then. An hour a day at the library. Unfortunately for me, I was in Toronto and all the rooms at the Quality Inn are gone. I think I will try priceline next.

Ok kids,I have the lowdown on the downwntown... Wells Fargo is about 4 blocks north of the Savery. The two are connected by the skywalk.Perhaps the Savery would have a shuttle to and from the show also, you can check with them. There's a big parking ramp right across the street from the Savery,if you need a place to rest your Helen Wheels. We maybe should meet up down on Court Ave.before the show.Have a bite and sip at Spagehhti Works,or Court Ave.Brewing.Inexpensive food and it's two blocks to the south of the hotel. We'll skip limo entrance to meet up with everyone.Head count?
-
I got shut out on Priceline, too, so I'm staying in Ankeny, which will be good, as my parents live that direction. I won't be eating or drinking after noon the day of the show, but it's a bit of a walk from Court Avenue, if I remember correctly. Is Court Avenue connected to the Skywalk? I was going to park early at the venue for $5. I think that is cheaper than at the parking ramps.
-
??Priceline had nothing to do with the Savory's special room rate, why did you think that? Not eating or drinking after noon the day of the show, what's that about? And as I said, the walk from court ave to wells fargo is about 6 blocks. As far as $5 parking, that sounds like a deal.I think you have to park across the street at vets, though, but not positive. Perhaps the party is being called off?
-
I never said the party is called off. I can't afford the Savery. It was $99 each for double occupancy and I'm alone. I'm not paying $200 to stay in Des Moines. I did much better, but not as convenient. I grew up in Des Moines and I think it is farther than 6 blocks to Vets from Court Ave. I worked at the Federal Building on Walnut for years and I wouldn' walk that far and Court is south of Walnut.
-
hotwire has rooms for under 80 in downtown des moines.... anyone doing the limo watch?
-
I didn't realize it, but my Priceline in Ankeny is a done deal. I didn't know about Hotwire either. I thought booking a room without naming your price meant you can cancel the reservation. I can--for $25 and the price difference isn't worth it. Oh, well. Live and learn and it's on the right side of town for leaving the next morning.

I checked my map and it does look like the Savery and part of the Iowa Events Center is connect by the sky walk - whatever bldg is right across the street from the arena (I could be wrong here - that's just what it looked like on the map I have). It seems like Court Avenue should be further than 6 blocks from the arena but since I've never walked it I can't be sure. The Spaghetti Works is inexpensive food; however, just be aware that they do not take reservations (it's packed on the weekends depending on how early you get there) and it's not overly big although it seems we dropped in there before a performance at the Civic Center several years ago and got right in. Beings we're talking about Thurs rather than Fri/Sat definitely works in our favor I would think. Have never been to Court Ave Brewing so don't really know anything about them. Either is OK by me - what time were you thinking??
-
Hi Seuss and every1, Meetup time for my 3sum could be around 3... I went down last week just to educate myself with the area again, and it is all very walkable.I think you're staying at the Savory? They have a nice grand piano in the bar I could tickle some Macca tunes on...I'd like to feed my face before the show too...we could meet anywhere, not much for crowds that early, except for Macca fans... Whatever we do will be cool by me... Only 10 days now.....Woohoooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You think an old lady can walk there and back? I know it is more than six blocks as when I worked at the Federal Building on Walnut, I wouldn't have dreamed of walking to Vets Auditorium and I was a young thing and in shape. That is my only problem with anything on Court street.
