I'm going to Liverpool!

Nancy R:
Woolton Church hall is what you really want to see the inside of. That is the place John actually met Paul.
Yes. St. Peter's Church in Woolton is where I am going to pull the first single, male, Anglican, Liverpudlian off of the street and put up our banns of marriage! My fantasy of Liverpool. Looking at these photos is like being a child in a candy store.
-
Here's St. Peter's church The afternoon, outdoor concert on July 6, 1957 took place in the back garden behind the church. Paul would have seen John play here. But they actually met between sets, in the church hall across the street. The evening performance was in there. The stage/steps from the hall are now in the Liverpool Museum.

I wanted to go inside both the church and the hall, and thankfully that day we were able to do both. I'm a history major so I also enjoyed seeing so much of the history of Liverpool this time around, as well as the Beatles sites again.

The cemetery/ graveyard is lovely there. Which cemetery did John and Paul supposedly hang out in when they were young lads?

Yes! John used to sit by the Eleanor Rigby grave and smoke since it is one of the taller ones there and he couldn't be seen behind it as easily.

Just curious as to where this info is coming from. Never heard it before and it's not in Mark Lewisohn's book Tune In.

Nope. Not that one and not true. I think myths are being fed by over keen tour guides or locals who like to think they have tales to tell to overseas visitors.. Paul has always said it was the graveyard behind/in the anglican cathedral grounds, which is of course next to lipa/the institute and the art college. They ould skive off classes sometimes and hide lying back in there soaking up the sun - it's a huge area by the colleges. He's been saying this ever since the oratorio. (Still no baby so popping back in, only briefly!! Off again in a min!!)

Thank you! I was shown that graveyard on my taxi tour, which was fine since there's history in that church's area anyway (and John's Uncle George is buried there), but I was skeptical about the graveyard story. He's showing me the Eleanor Rigby and McKenzie graves like they're the gospel, when at best it's alleged. That's why I was kind of ambivalent about the tour, or at least wished I'd had a different guide. (Like Mark Lewisohn! Could I get him?? ) I needed someone to drive me around Liverpool, so fine, but could you just stick to the facts?

The guide I had wasn't talking about both Paul and John at the time, he was talking about John when he would skip out of the church when he was a choir boy during practice. Again not sure of the truth in that but this wasn't about when they were skipping classes.

I don't remember John being a choir boy, so not sure of validity of that story. I'll check Tune In when I get a chance. I have the unabridged version.

Thanks Nancy, please let us know if you find anything! I don't have the unabridged copy, just the regular copy, but I can't even check that as I left it at my parent's house when I was home last Christmas. Need to get it when I'm there again in December!

My photobucket is screwing up and I got logged out of here! Posted a new pic of 12 Arnold Grove, then went on to say that our group only got to see 9 Madryn and the Empress Pub from the bus because 3 guys on the tour (earlier) took 20 minutes to find our bus. They didn't even get to see 10 Admiral Grove. I was glad I'd seen it all 5 years ago, and even got to go inside #10. How they could miss it (parked on the other side of Penny Lane) is beyond me!
