AROTR Line Up - This Year: Anyone going?
-
B.J., I'm sorry I didn't get to meet you. Nancy, what did you think of the new venue? I liked it, but could not find Rachel's Strawberry Field or Garden or whatever it was called.
-
Too tired right now to adequately answer your question. Drove 7 hrs 15 mins to get home and then had to go in to work at about 5:30 for 2 hours to do the suture order. More later, okay?

I had 2 highlights on Saturday. First was the Wings reunion as Nancy described. To see Denny Laine, Laurence Juber and Steve Holley all on stage was fantastic. And their setlist was pretty great too. Going by memory here it was: Time to Hide No Words Again, Again, & Again Deliver Your Children Rockestra Theme My Love (Laurence dedicated it to Henry McCullough who did the original guitar solo) Go Now Live and Let Die Band on the Run I've might have missed a song or two but it was a great set. Really impressed with Laurence Juber on the electric guitar. He is terrific. Would have liked to hear a few more Back to the Egg songs but who can complain. This was a once in a lifetime type of event. Denny was only there because a member of the Cryers Band couldn't make it because his wife was having a baby. My 2nd highlight for the day was the Paul Solo set done by a group from Brazil called Blue Beatles. This was a set at this Beatles Festival I was hoping for but frankly didn't expect to happen. Even Paul himself has ignored so much of his Solo stuff. The lead vocalist from the Blue Beatles had a fantastic Paul voice which meant they could do practically anything from rockers to ballads. Going by memory here was the setlist: Venus and Mars/Rock Show Letting Go 1985 Eat At Home Dear Boy 3 Legs Uncle Albert My Brave Face Figure of Eight Lonesome Town Honey Hush Maybe I'm Amazed Hey Jude (final song) Again, I might have forgotten a song or two but it was an amazing set. Unlike the outdoor stages, this was held in a small intimate venue that had a look of the Cavern club where Paul performed Run Devil Run in 2001 I believe. Anyway, it was a great show and something I never expected heading into this Festival. It made the long trip I took worthwhile it in every way. As i said, the lead singer's voice was spectacular. Loved all the songs and I was up dancing which is not something I would normally do. For Run Devil Run fans, his versions of Lonesome Town and Honey Hush were over the top. And since I have been listening to flowers in the dirt recently, I loved My Brave Face and Figure of Eight. Today they are going to do the whole Ram album. Man, I'm in heaven at this Festival.
Thanks for the post. I bet it was nice to hear those songs done live. Glad RAM was being played but would love to hear these groups venture into at least the 2000's McCartney catalog. Glad you had a great time !!
___________________________________________________________ Thanks Yankeefan...it was well worth it considering it was my first time attending one of these type Beatle festivals. I understand they have a big one in Northern New Jersey (close to Manhattan) and of course Liverpool itself. My expectations weren't high for hearing very much Solo McCartney (Nancy had warned me) so I was very happy to have gotten what I got. Besides Bluebird and Every Night (and the other wings' songs I mentioned) a couple of the bands did play Silly Love Songs and Helen Wheels. I don't think Paul ever played Helen Wheels on any of his tours which is surprising since it was a Top 10 hit. Both songs sounded real good live by the way. Except for the 2 Flowers in the Dirt and 2 Run Devil Run songs that was it for Paul Solo after 1980. Quite a few of the groups were basically very good Beatle tribute Bands so they tended to do what they do best and what they are used to playing. It was nice to hear the deeper Beatle songs like Dr. Robert, And Your Bird Can Sing, I want to Tell You etc. It was also nice to hear a few of the George Solo songs like Isn't It a Pity and the Wilbury's song Handle with Care. Again, both sounded great live. Besides Blue Beetles, there was a Scottish Band called Itchygoo Park which I got to know pretty well (they were also staying at the same Hotel). They were so nice and they played some of the Wings' songs I mentioned. A couple of the members were big Paul Solo fans as well but again they were playing more of what the audience were familiar with (e.g known Wings' hits and of course Beatle songs. As Paul continues to get older (I doubt he will do more full scale tours after this one is over) I think there will be a group in the future that will tour the US specializing in Paul Solo. I told this to the Itchygoo Park band and they certainly agreed that it was a niche that someone could fill. I recently saw the "Paul McCartney Years" show in Tampa and those guys were very polished. The show was excellent but the setlist was famous Paul Beatle songs and Wings songs up to Speed of Sound. The lead singer had all the Paul "mannerisms" from the Wings Over America tour down perfectly. Most importantly the band had every song down perfectly. For a Band to have a successful US tour of Paul Solo they would have to be accomplished from both the vocals and instrumentation points of view. Similar to the Band you mentioned (Pure McCartney I think they were called) that did the Ram album. The Blue Beetles were good vocally but weren't nearly as masterful when it came to the music and instruments. From going around the various stages, I heard no one (even the shows whose sets were emphasizing Paul) doing anything from Tug of War let alone from Flaming Pie, Chaos and MAF. I really believe a group like "Pure McCartney" could have a successful tour doing the best from Tug, FITD, Off the Ground, Flaming Pie, Chaos, MAF, NEW, etc. But again, they have to be really masterful from the overall sound point of view. With the Internet today, good reviews from ordinary people as well as music critics would "sell out" the smaller type venues without a problem in my opinion.

America and Vanilla Fudge next year.

I still haven't really recovered! I can't say I loved the new venue, mostly because the shuttle service was terrible and I mostly walked back and forth from the Sheraton which is about a half mile one way. Also, I can't handle being out in the sun and they only had tents for 2 of the stages. I liked having the Galt Hotel right there where they had a lot of stuff indoors and you could cool off or go up to your room quickly if needed. My friend who usually comes with her mom (her mom will not go back!) and I are trying to decide what to do for next year. I had my $99 hotel deposit from 2017 moved to 2018 in mid-May, but they said I can get it refunded if I decide not to come. And about what BJ talked about, the bands are there to mostly play the Beatles hits and only some do specialty shows, like LSB Experience did an all-Eagles show (which we missed because we just got out of Peter Asher's show that we got into at 11:45 am - front row! - and were starving at 3 pm so ate at Bearno's pizza!) Then Gavin Pring does his George stuff (he's excellent!) There was no "Paul" band there since for some reason Wingsbanned was not invited (they are from the U.K. and have been there every other year I was there (since 2011) You are just not going to hear the later stuff of Paul's there. The festival is trying to appeal to more people which is why since 2012 they have a non-Beatle tribute headliner. (In 2011 they had 1964: The Tribute) They have had Jefferson Starship, The Beach Boys (Mike Love), ELO, The Zombies, The Rascals (Felix Cavaliere), and this year Ambrosia, Mark Lindsay, The Grass Roots, and Peter Noone (Herman's Hermits) Itchycoo Park I see did a show called "Paul You Need Is Love" but that was during the LOVE album concert which is not to be missed!! People from all the bands get together and note-for-note recreate the LOVE album (Cirque du Soleil) I think this is the 3rd year they've done it.

Nancy, that is what I did my first year--walked back and forth from the Sheraton. Thank goodness for the bright street lights. After I got back, discovered that two of my dear friends are huge Beatles' friends who live nearby. They must have told me last year, but I had forgotten. They want to go next year. So, I've got it on my calendar for April next year to remind them. The new venue has potential that can be developed to make it better for next year, I think. The Galt was great if you got a room early enough, but I never did bc of my erratic schedule. So then you feel like the red-headed step-child if you aren't staying there where the action is. But, in a way, I was glad to just have the peace and quiet away from everything at the end of the days that I got to go. You probably stay up late and party, so maybe you don't mind it. I heard others say they missed the Galt, too. Hope this gets ironed out better for next year.
-
I don't understand what you mean about your "first year" and walking back and forth from the Sheraton? Did you mean a Sheraton in Louisville? Cause I don't think you meant you walked from Louisville, KY to Jeffersonville, IN! And I did not go to any of the late night parties and wouldn't even if they had been at the Sheraton. They were all at the Clarion where the bands stayed. Last year I briefly went to see The Jukebox play at the Marriott and then walked across the street to where I was staying at the EconoLodge.

BJ, see link below. I wish I could get a copy, it would be awesome. Since this was done to celebrate Paul's 70th birthday, wonder if they would do something for his 75th !! Take a look at the set list and they also did some hits from Wings and thought it was cool they also did "Junk". https://timc.sonymusicshop.dk/tim-christensen-uk/albums/pure-mccartney-vinyl.aspx

____________________________________________________________ Thanks Yankeefan, Couldn't agree with you more. I would love to have this in a regular CD format. Hopefully, the same Band would do a follow-up for Paul's 75th. Their vocals and instumentation were great just seeing the You Tube clips. They could just take many of the best songs from Tug of War, FITD, Off the Ground, Flaming Pie, Chaos and MAF and it potentially could be a great live performance and CD. I know if they toured in the US and they were anywhere close to me, I would be there.

As I have said, this Festival (AROTR) had many highlights for me. One more I would like to add was the Peter Asher (Peter & Gordon) Set. It was just as much of a Documentary as a live music set. Nancy and I were lucky enough to get front row seats. Each side of the Ballroom (at the Clarion) had large video screens where Peter basically summarized his illustrious career as a performer (Peter and Gordon) and Producer (James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt). For a real music buff (especially 60's and 70's) I found the still pictures on the screen to be so interesting and informative. My favorite part was the Paul McCartney stories. I had heard most of this before but to hear them from Peter himself and to see the pictures of Peter and Paul when they were so young was just great to say the least. One of the things that Peter was emphasizing during his show was how often he was at the right place at the right time. With Paul dating Peter's Sister (Jane Asher) and actually living in their house for a short while (Peter's family was relatively well to do living in London) he got a chance to see (as he says) a genius at work. The story of Paul giving Peter and Gordon a demo of the song World Without Love is amazing. Again, Peter was fortunate that John didn't like this Paul song. With the Beatles not recording World Without Love, it gave the opportunity for P & G to record it. As Peter says, the song wasn't complete (it needed a bridge) and he asked Paul for permission to not only record it, but to finish it with a bridge. As Peter laughingly said, Paul did it in about 15 minutes. The rest is music history as their record company put it out as a single and it became a worldwide #1 hit including the USA. It put P&G on the music map. Some of the music highlights for me were live versions of these songs: Nobody I know (also written by Paul) I Don't Want to See You Again (another Paul song) I Go to Pieces (one of my favorite P&G songs written by Del Shannon) Woman (Paul wanted to use the pseudonym Bernard Webb as the writer) Lady Godiva (a novelty type song that again became a #1 hit for P&G) True Love Ways (great Buddy Holly song) A World Without Love (they ended the set with this great one by Macca) Peter was available to meet and sign his CD (greatest hits of P&G) that was available to buy after the Set. Nancy and I didn't miss our opportunity. He was very cordial. I really like the extensive booklet that comes with the CD. It goes through each song (all of their singles) with the background of the recording. Especially from a melody point of view, Paul McCartney is a genius. Just think, he gave P&G 4 songs that were all hits and that the Beatles never recorded. How do you have extra songs to just give someone! Seeing this Peter Asher show just proved again just how prolific Macca is with all of these melodies just in his head.

You couldn't have summarized it better BJ! I have the CD in my car now. Btw, the 2 photos you took of me and Peter turned out great!!!

_____________________________________________________ Thanks Nancy. I wrote this summary first thing in the morning (after my coffee of course) and I do write a lot better at that time of the day. For any Maccaboard people who live within 200 miles of this festival, I couldn't recommend it higher for the Memorial Day Weekend 2018. It is really an inexpensive and great value vacation if you love music. People who drive have the flexibility to even go for just 1 or 2 days.

I always thought it would have been cool if Mr. McCartney did an official version of songs he gave to other artist and put them on a CD. In addition to ones you mentioned, you could add "Goodbye", "Come And Get It" and On The Wings Of A Nightengale" Don't know if he would have enough for a full album/CD but I would love it.
