AROTR Line Up - This Year: Anyone going?
-
That would be wild to hear Denny Laine, Steve Holley and Laurence Juber play a few Back To the Egg songs right after hearing Paul play none of them.

Great shot, Nancy! I was wondering where folks could go when it rained. So, enough tent space for everyone? Hope so. This is a great update with the name of a hotel where newcomers can get room today, Sunday. It also has driving directions, what time the box office opens today, parking, etc. http://www.arotr.com/site/?page_id=6223 How was Mark Lindsey's set? Also, Peter and Peter together? Hope neither of those shows was rained out.
Mark was pretty good. He sure has aged though. He's 75, but stayed thin. Peter and Peter were great! Asher came out as a surprise and sang World Without Love with Peter Noone doing Gordon's part. PN was so cute, funny and energetic! And he will be 70 in November! The Grass Roots (none are original members) played after Mark before PN. I enjoyed them. It rained a bit at the beginning of Mark and PN, but let up, thankfully. I crouched under an umbrella as many people did. I had 3rd row center seats and a nice couple next to me saved my seat so I could go to the restroom and get something to eat between 2 of the shows. At 12:30 pm today is Peter Asher's big show at the other hotel. He did same show there yesterday, but you had to pick one of the days. I'm just going to drive over and back. It's about 1.5 miles. The shuttle service has not been reliable so mostly I have walked the 1/2 mile from my hotel to the festival.
-
Oh, and during the heavy rain there was enough covered shelter throughout the park for everyone. There is supposed to be more rain today, but maybe not until 7 pm. Hoping most of the day will just be cloudy.
-
I am an hour away and the wind is actually blowing and cooler. Hope to get there in time to see Spizer.

I had 2 highlights on Saturday. First was the Wings reunion as Nancy described. To see Denny Laine, Laurence Juber and Steve Holley all on stage was fantastic. And their setlist was pretty great too. Going by memory here it was: Time to Hide No Words Again, Again, & Again Deliver Your Children Rockestra Theme My Love (Laurence dedicated it to Henry McCullough who did the original guitar solo) Go Now Live and Let Die Band on the Run I've might have missed a song or two but it was a great set. Really impressed with Laurence Juber on the electric guitar. He is terrific. Would have liked to hear a few more Back to the Egg songs but who can complain. This was a once in a lifetime type of event
Actually, if you want to see Denny, LJ and Steve again, they are all confirmed guests for the Chicago Fest for Beatles fans in August. I am sure they will perform together there, with Liverpool as their backing band. Denny Seiwell will be there as well. Thank you and thanks to Nancy for your reports from Louisville! Sounds like it is a great fest this year.

You're welcome (but it's in Jeffersonville, IN now) Spent over 2 hours at Peter Asher's talk/concert at the Clarion. BJ and I got front row seats! FANTASTIC! Got Peter and Gordon greatest hits CD plus signed and photo with him for $20. He is so nice! And he talked a lot about his sister Jane and Paul and how Paul lived with them, plus showed lots of cool pics on 2 big screens.

Brit Beat doing a great Pepper show. Love the costumes!
They are my favorite Beatles tribute band that was there. I am FB friends and have known Christopher (Paul) for several years. He subbed for the Paul in a GA band I went to see NYEve 2016.

Today is Monday morning and I'm pretty beat. Thank God that today's shows don't start to like 1:00pm. For the Paul fans especially, I wanted to give a little report on the Blue Beatles set featuring the whole RAM album. First of all, these guys did a credible job. It is not an easy album to do without having all the "production" extras. The real album sounds you would hear for example on Uncle Albert (the water, thunder effects) were done by the band themselves with the singer Mario doing it vocally. There is a group Yankeefan has mentioned that is on You Tube (I think they go by Pure McCartney) that do a much more "finished" job but again the Blue Beatles did it pretty raw so I enjoyed it. I noticed a couple of people left after a song or two. I could understand that if you came to hear Beatles music and you weren't familiar with Ram. For me, it was very enjoyable and at least you were hearing different music from what so many of the other band were playing. Just running down the songs, here were a few of my favorites: Smile Away - this was great especially considering the lead singers voice that really sounded like Paul's Ram's version. It really rocked. Monk berry Moon Delight - I thought they would really have a difficult time with this one but it was good. Eat At Home - Nice version and so much fun to hear live since it really rocks Dear Boy - like the others above, I never heard it live and I was surprised how well they did it Heart of the Country - loved it...why Paul has never done it live baffles me. I actually think the Blue Beatles set on Saturday better since they did a "general" Paul solo set instead of trying to do a whole Album. It is easier to "cherry pick" the songs that they can do the best. Much more difficult to do every song from a specific album and Ram is not the easiest for sure. I especially loved the songs from Flowers in the Dirt and Run Devil Run (see my previous post) that they did the previous night. The next morning in my Hotel room I wrote down a whole list of songs they should do for future shows. I saw them at the Hotel later at Breakfast and they were so appreciative. A couple of them actually took a photo of my list from their cell phones. I was going through the songs...MAF, Chaos, Flaming Pie, Tug of War, Flowers in the Dirt and they were singing little snippets of the songs as we were reviewing them. They knew them so well that it was obvious that they are big Paul solo fans. I was kidding with them saying that I wanted to be their manager. They were really laughing. I emphasized that while there are many Beatle tribute bands, no one was doing Paul from Tug of War onward in the US. There was an older guy with them who I believe is their manager and right before the Ram set later in the day he walked over and handed me one of their t-shirts with Blue Beatles on it. So cool and they were so nice. As I said, one of the things I really enjoyed about this Festival is the "international" aspect of the performers.
-
BJ got a t-shirt and still keeps spelling it "Beatles" but they are Blue "Beetles." (Just giving you a hard time, you know me!)
-
Thanks for the shots, Nancy. Yes, I agree that those painting were incredible. I, unfortunately, did not get to see the BlueBeetles (arrrrrrrgh). But, maybe next year. I was disappointed that no one dedicated a song to Gregg Allman at any of the stages where I was, but maybe someone did when I was in the bathroom or elsewhere. I drove down yesterday and back this morning. I did not see Denny L. or the Wings' drummer, oh Steve Holley (don't bother correcting me about spelling. who cares? Everyone knows who I mean.) This was disappointing. and of course, the two Peters and Mark Lindsay not there Sunday (at least I didn't see them). I also did not see Tony Bramwell walking aroundl on Sunday. I see now he is not on the printed schedule, but was scheduled for Sunday morning online a few weeks ago. So, maybe he cancelled. I did meet Bruce Spizer. Enjoyed talking with him. He did a technical presentation, musical analysis, of songs on Pepper and how they sounded various ways (we listened to outtakes) and how Giles Martin put together the most recent tweaks. Very interesting. A couple that I met told me that lots of musicians were doing some poolside picking/singing at the Clarion Saturday night after the show. And I think there was a sing along in the lobby last night afterwards. I didn't go back down to find out. Was pretty tired and I have an editing deadline tomorrow, so couldn't have stayed up anyway. I enjoyed some parts of the Love show more than others. Not as good as the first one that I saw, but still very good. Editing to say I really like those shoes that Peter Asher wears. And I enjoyed the Weeklings. They were quite good. Maybe they are growing on me.
-
Oh, best surprise was The Wild Honey Pies. Man! Can that girl sing and dance. Gary Jacob's' daughter is lead singer. The Newbies let them go in their spot. They were fantastic! She did Tina Turner's "Rolling on the River (Proud Mary)" to a T.
-
Fan4-45years, no need for any correction. You spelled Steve Holley right! He was there today with The Cryers at 2 pm and also sat in on one song with another band (maybe the Blue Beetles?) Shannon (the artist) played guitar as Denny Laine had left. She was sick as a dog though and really shouldn't have been up there singing! Gavin Pring also got up there for one song (Twist and Shout) This was all at Stage C. They had technical difficulties, plus a late start for Classicstone doing the Pink Floyd tribute. BJ and I left early. Tired and have to get up at 8 to get out of here by 9 so I will hopefully miss the rush hour traffic in Atlanta.

Well the Abbey Road on the River Festival is over and I must say that it was fantastic. Since most of us on this Site are not wealthy, it represented, in my opinion, great value. Special thanks to Nancy R for letting me know about AROTR in the first place. Just a couple of highlights for me on Monday (the last day). There were so many bands that it is hard to catch all of them. There was one band in particular that I had missed up to the last day. Thank God there were less performers still around at the end, but fortunately I did catch these guys. Their name is LSB Experience (you can google them for sure since they had people selling their CD"s during their set. They are a Crosby Stills and Nash type of Band and their specialty was strictly acoustic guitars and boy could they play and harmonize. Here's just a few of the songs I remember and they had a "Paul" threesome that I loved. Band on the Run - Shocked me that they did BOTR totally acoustic and it was great. Bluebird - first time hearing this at the festival (great) Blackbird - didn't surprise me and it was also great New Kid in Town - dedicated to Glen Frey Desperado - great to hear this one and the one above (always loved the Eagles Listen to the Music - Doobie Brothers It Keeps You Running - Doobie Brother Helpless - Crosby Stills and Nash Like a Rollingstone - Bob Dylan There were others that I just can't remember but all in all it was a terrific set and I highly recommend this group if you like the CS&N type harmonies and great acoustic playing. And as I said, their homage to Paul was so nice to hear. Speaking of Paul songs, I don't think I mentioned that I heard Every Night a couple of times and that sounded so nice as well. It was not only great hearing all the Beatle songs (and Paul Solo Songs!) but they went beyond with other artists...British Invasion artists (Dave Clark 5, Peter and Gordon, Kinks, Animals, Bee Gees and later period ELO. As I said, if you couldn't find terrific bands to see at this Festival then you don't like good music. Tremendous value considering the cost.

Thanks for all the reviews BJ, Nancy & Fan4. Glad you all enjoyed yourself.

This was a once in a lifetime type of event. Denny was only there because a member of the Cryers Band couldn't make it because his wife was having a baby. My 2nd highlight for the day was the Paul Solo set done by a group from Brazil called Blue Beatles. This was a set at this Beatles Festival I was hoping for but frankly didn't expect to happen. Even Paul himself has ignored so much of his Solo stuff. The lead vocalist from the Blue Beatles had a fantastic Paul voice which meant they could do practically anything from rockers to ballads. Going by memory here was the setlist: Venus and Mars/Rock Show Letting Go 1985 Eat At Home Dear Boy 3 Legs Uncle Albert My Brave Face Figure of Eight Lonesome Town Honey Hush Maybe I'm Amazed Hey Jude (final song) Again, I might have forgotten a song or two but it was an amazing set. Unlike the outdoor stages, this was held in a small intimate venue that had a look of the Cavern club where Paul performed Run Devil Run in 2001 I believe. Anyway, it was a great show and something I never expected heading into this Festival. It made the long trip I took worthwhile it in every way. As i said, the lead singer's voice was spectacular. Loved all the songs and I was up dancing which is not something I would normally do. For Run Devil Run fans, his versions of Lonesome Town and Honey Hush were over the top. And since I have been listening to flowers in the dirt recently, I loved My Brave Face and Figure of Eight. Today they are going to do the whole Ram album. Man, I'm in heaven at this Festival.
Thanks for the post. I bet it was nice to hear those songs done live. Glad RAM was being played but would love to hear these groups venture into at least the 2000's McCartney catalog. Glad you had a great time !!
