RIP George Martin
-
He was an incredible talent and his contributions to the Beatles' legacy, as well as to all of music, were enormous. I met him once, briefly, many years ago, and he was kind and gracious. I also had the good forture of seeing his multi-media show where he discussed the recording of Sgt. Pepper. It was an honor to hear him speak that night. RIP Sir George.

I've already posted this in the "RIP" thread over in the "Talk More Talk" section but I figured I'd post it here as well. This is very sad news. I consider myself lucky enough to have seen Sir George Martin in person. He was being interviewed by Dire Straits manager Ed Bicknell at Canadian Music Week here in Toronto back in 1998. I couldn't have been more than 25 feet away from where he was sitting on stage and I remember him looking quite good for his age, which at the time was 72. There are so many moments I remember from that interview but one of the funniest was when George was talking about something music related, I forget what the topic was now, but then Ed Bicknell, who had various papers in his hands with questions written on them brought up the topic of the Beatles and George Martin said, "Forget the Beatles" and Ed said "Well there goes page 6 and 7". I guess George wanted to build up to the topic of the Beatles gradually. George came across as a very nice, intelligent, soft spoken man and a true gentleman. I was honoured to have been in his presence for that 2 hour interview and I suppose I shouldn't be surprised he's gone at the age of 90 but he's one of those people who you think is always going to be there. Thanks for the music Sir George Martin. R.I.P.

I was shocked this morning and did not believe it at the very start, but unfortunately it was true......Very sad news, God bless him! He had a wonderful and amazing life..................

I was up late last night as I usually am, and saw the sad news on FB. Thank God for George Martin or we may not have had this wonderful journey with the Beatles that we've had for over 50 years! RIP Sir George!

I got a notification from Line indicating I have two unread messages. I opened the app: it was from Sir Paul's Line account: one heartfelt statement from sir Paul and one photo of them together. Thank you, sir George Martin, the true 5th Beatle!

Yes. George Martin is a Legend. He is still The Best.

Produced by Sir George Martin.

For those in the UK BBC4 is currently repeating the wonderful recent Arena documentary on George.

Very sad to hear of the passing of Sir George Martin. One of the greats of music production, not only for The Beatles but for the myriad of other artists he produced. Including some brilliant comedy/novelty records for The Goons and Goons solo Peter Sellers & Spike Milligan. I really hate the term The 5th Beatle but if anyone should be called that George Martin probably deserves it more. Also had the nous to see something special in the Beatles that others couldn't and signing them. The first real step to becoming the global phenomenon they would shortly achieve.

Thanks, Sir George!!!! You made possible the music that we love so much.

RIP George Martin. No doubt he was The Fifth Beatle. I'm listening to The White Album right now in tribute. The album sounds as if it could have come out today by a great Indie band. Timeless production - the hallmark of a great music producer.
-
Cheers, George.

Just want to add my condolences...George was part of the absolute *magic* that resulted in The Beatles. So much talent, and so many crazy events and personalities had to come together...and Sir George was a huge part of that. So, thank you for the happiness and joy you helped bring to the World!

RIP George Martin,he made the Beatles sound great. He was the fifth Beatle who lived a full life. My brother even thought he was the one that made the Beatles and the reason the Beatles were great. eh will be missed and thanks you George Martin for giving us the Beatles.

I can't add much to the tributes posted so far, so I'm just going to go play "Sgt. Pepper" in his memory. God has this been a rough winter for the music world. So much talent gone in just a few months.

I know! I was talking to my sister about that. Time is marching on for all the legends of Rock. And for us too!

When I get home from work I will play the excellent "Produced by George Martin" Doco DVD. I think I will also finally get around to getting the 6 CD collection of his work also titled "Produced by George Martin".

Ironically, he didn't have that much of a role during The White Album. Really the boys produced some of their own stuff and Chris Thomas was handed production duties as GM went on holiday. Let It Be aside, it's probably the album that least features his imprint.

I read his autobiography in 2015. Truly brilliant and ... nice. RIP Sir George.
