? Ringo's first 1963 Ludwig Oyster black pearl three-piece drum kit that he used in over 200 performances and recordings between May 1963 and February 1964, including for hits such as "Can't Buy Me Love" and "All My Loving." Paul McCartney also used the set on his first solo album, "McCartney." $300,000-$500,000.
Anyone have $500,000 I can borrow? I'll pay you back by the end of the century.

I wish I was a millionaire, I'd buy the drum kit for sure!

Perhaps Dhani can bid on his dad's Gretsch Gentlemen - at least he'll get it back in the family and a portion of the proceeds would go to the Lotus Foundation. For $1000 you can get the auction catalog book signed by Ringo and Barbara. That may be the least expensive piece in the sale. (Non-signed book $200) http://www.juliensauctions.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=150

Do they need the money? Let's see...put them in a museum or have an exhibition or sell the stuff?

That question is definitely one that you can already answer. Ringo and Barb have downsized estates to a Beverly Hills house and a London apartment. Each residence had storage units that grew over the years. If he is not living in those estates then he has no motivation for traveling back there to look around for the fun of it. I'm sure he had the auction company come out to each storage unit to assess the market value + their convenience fees for this service. I truly do not think this is money driven but just downsizing his estate and various items/clutter as he is in his later years. You won't see him opening his LA home on Hillcrest Dr. for a garage sale so naturally he is having an auction company do it for him. Granted he is going to gain a few million, donate a few million, and pay a lot of commission fee's to the auction house. He may have donated some items already to the Rock Hall but he would like to see some of those possessions in the public's hand (granted its the upper tiered income market). I suppose Ringo's team could do giveaways / bidding on their own but that would take away from his Lotus Foundation and be very time consuming. The demand for ownership of a Beatle's possessions will skyrocket beyond a general fan's means. It would have been nice of Ringo to return John and George's guitars back to their respective families but I hope Dhani/Olivia and Yoko/Sean/or Julian have the financial means to buy them back at least for the benefit of the Lotus foundation.

Don't you think his kids would want that drum kit?

You'd be surprised how differently kids of famous people feel about such things.
-
^ but his son is a famous drummer, you'd just had thought he'd want it. But anyway, i'm pretty down that this is all being sold without maybe having a year long exhibition in the UK to go with that big one he had in the states a couple of years back (it had clothes, drums, you remember the one i'm waffling on about!). Id've loved to have seen all this stuff, surely it could've waited a year to sell.. And with Paul having a replica ludwig drum kit made like the 1963 beatles kit in his studio, damn HE'D probably want the drum kit - he can afford it though

Agreed! If not for himself, for his kids. And yes, I remember he had an exhibition (was it a traveling show?).

It was at the Grammy Museum in LA, and I don't believe it traveled anywhere else. http://www.grammymuseum.org/on-display/past-exhibits/ringo-peace-love

Oh my! EXCUUUUSE ME!! The kids don't have any interest in that stuff. That they belong to the Beatles is not relevant. Not to the kids, obviously.

Yikes and Ringo lost HEAPS of memorabilia and souvenirs in his LA house fire back in 1979... How much did he actually keep? Or was he too Molly the Monk to throw anything out... Sounds like he has more than me - and that's pretty hard to do.

I don't know, I kind of have mixed feelings. I think it would be a nice jesture if the drum set and guitars were donated and kept safe in a museum; but whom am I to say. I, however, think it's really cool that Ringo is allowing his fans to own a piece of Beatles' history for a price lol. (Not only that, a large majority of the proceeds go to the Lotus Foundation which was founded by Ringo & Barbara. When you see his signed artwork and signed drumheads at his concerts; the proceeds go to the same cause.) Hey, that's how I was able to own one of Paul McCartney's Tour Jackets about 13 years ago. It was from Bette Midler's Hulaween Auction for the New York Restoration Project Charitybuzz. Every so often you will see a Paul McCartney auction for VIP tickets and meeting him at this Auction House. As a matter of fact, at this moment there's an auction to win VIP concert tickets to the Columbus, OH concert in October, along with meeting Sir Paul. The auction ends on September 23rd, and it's already at $26,000. I registered for Ringo's Auction at Julien for this lot in December. I don't know if I will win anything. But hey, you never know!

The proceeds are going to charity, Ringo's favorite, the Lotus Foundation. Who are we to tell Ringo how to live his life.
-
^ thought it was "a portion" of the proceeds going to the charity?
