WHY are you a veggie?

To me there is no difference between eating a dog and a sheep. It`s just a cultural thing. Sorry to say there is plenty of evidence that fish can feel pain. They also can`t breathe when they are dragged out of the water. I think, these days, it`s suggested that responsible cat owners should always know where their cats are - which would reduce the number of killings.

fish cannot feel pain as they lack the appropriate neocortex in the brain. Plus there life is breed, spawn and die. I don't think eating fish is bad. I not talking dolphins or whales we know there different they have larger brains. I know i could ask her( my friend) what she eats but that no fun. I like to surprise her with something good. Something she wouldn't expect from me. How does eggplant parmesan sound as vegans. I know this was answered before but I forget what do Vegan do on holidays. What is a main course at a holiday dinner if no fish or meat is allowed. Gypsy said ..
Animals that are carnivores, only hunt & kill prey when they are hungry. World of difference between animals & humans
my cat kills birds she doesn't eat so animals kill for game.. Dogs too sometime kill cats or other dogs they don't eat them. I disagree that a cougar only kills for food. I belive a cougar would kill a fawn because he can, hungry or not. I sure food was the case in my yard. No one letting there small kids walk around now. They will attack people too.
But you know that the main difference between whales or dolphines and fish isn't the size of the brain?

I am a vegetarian mainly for humane reasons, but also environment. And here is an article about the health benefits of being veggie Vegetarians Live Longer The battle has long been waged, and will certainly continue in spite of this study. Are humans designed/evolved to eat everything and at risk of malnutrition as vegetarians? Or is vegetarianism the healthy and ethical choice? The most impressive data arises from a study of 1904 vegetarians over 21 years by the German Cancer Research Center (Deutsche Krebsforschungszentrum). The study's shocking results: vegetarian men reduced their risk of early death by 50%! Women vegetarians benefit from a 30% reduction in mortality. Long-term Study of Vegetarians The participants of the the German Cancer Research Center study included 60 vegans (no animal products consumed), 1165 vegetarians (eating eggs, milk but no meat) with the remainder described as "moderate" vegetarians who occasionally ate fish or meat. The health of these study participants was compared with the average German population. Living longer seems not to be exclusively related to eating meat, though, as the results for moderate vegetarians was not statistically different from those for vegan or strict vegetarian diets. To the argument that it is not vegetarianism but a general interest in a healthier lifestyle which leads to such notable results, scientists reply with evidence that the majority of vegetarians do not cite health reasons for their lifestyle, but make their choice based on ethical commitment, environmental concerns or simply personal taste. Vegetarians and Malnutrition Research by a team led by Professor Ibrahim Elmadfa at the University of Vienna found a much better than average intake of Vitamin C, Carotinoides, Folic acid, fiber and unsaturated fats. Where shortcomings may arise is for Vitamin B12, calcium und Vitamin D in a vegan diet. Astoundingly, however, study participants did not suffer from diseases, such as osteoporosis, typically related to inadequate intakes of these micro-nutrients. Peace

I got cougars in my woods. The small animals in my neighborhood have bigger issue than Kiki. If my cat takes a bird or two the eagles, hawk, and who know what else will take her and the rest. (Did I mention a eagle landed on my deck feet away from my dog Benny,he's my weiner dog) I figured he was just chillin or Benny would of been history. Now if that bird took Kiki, than what? Its nature way. However if Kiki takes a bird, I'm a failure as a cat owner. Ahhh Ok : . You sort of side step the topic. You said animals don't kill for fun only man. I said my cat kills for fun or for unknown reason she doesn't eat the birds. Also smarty pants it was in my living room. I open the deck door and the bird flew in and before I knew what happen Kiki down it. She keep the flys down too. I can see where you think eating a dog or sheep doesn't matter. However dogs are tame and usally think man is a friend so not a whole lot of game there.

And still they are going to die when out of water! And a fish is also trying to breath when out of water! It looks quite painful what they are going through then!

While on holiday last week, my DH took our kid crabbing for the first time. After they dropped the trap into the bay, we left to go to a lighthouse on another island & to also island hop for a few hours. When we returned to our cottage & freshened up a bit, we went to check the crab trap. Our kid caught 2 crabs. One of them was really huge & very fiesty. I took some photos. Then the first, smaller crab was released back into the bay. Our kid wanted to see a little more of the 2nd crab. He was a lovely shade of blue, had big pincers & looked like he had been around for quite a long time. He was also released back into the bay. We looked down into the water & watched him scurry away as fast as he could. Nature is amazing!

sounds like your a active parent and that's great. Also sounds like you teaching your child to be a caring person which is important. Had you put chicken into that crab pot you will see how amazing crabs are, they would have that chicken cleaned to the bone in minutes and been full to the brim with crabs. They don't have a lot of chicken in the sea so its a delicacy they enjoy thoroughly. : Sometimes when I eat king crab I think about how long it takes for a crab to get that big and the fact their live deep in the oceans away from man. We're resourceful.

Appletartz, thank you very much for all the nice things you said. Ever since toddler days, our "little" boy has been a very compassionate & caring person. My DH & I just try to bring out more of the best that he already is. Looking back at the years, I sometimes wish I could go back in time & relive some of those special moments. Everyone in our family & extended family are all animals lovers & almost all have at least one pet.

Some people act as if there is no CHOICE involved in what they decide to eat. If you are shipwrecked on a deserted island, then by all means, catch a wild boar so you can survive...but if you are getting your dinner at a grocery store, then you do have other options. You can't have mobile phones and factory farms and still consider yourself a caveman. If you live in a civilized world, then be civilized, please. Thank you. If you don't care about animals, then think about other people in the world...meat production uses more land and water resources (and causes more pollution) than raising crops to feed people...help solve the world hunger crisis...go veggie!

Because we love animals & it is healthier for everyone.

I agree with all of this....but after ten years of vegetarianism, I am baffled as to how simple the idea has become in my mind. This is my mindset: When did eating meat become an absolute right? It's a privilege. One that should not be taken lightly. If you HAVE to eat meat, then please do so. But if you don't have to, why would you? It just doesn't make sense to me. Lots of things taste good and feel good in this world other than meat. Stop letting greed rule your stomach...because, by mental extension, the greed will run your life. Sure, if you came near a crocodile, he would probably try to eat you...and yet his brain is the size of a pea. Ours is not and there is a reason for this. You don't have to give up all meat at once to make a difference. Every bit counts. P.S. Animals do not eat nearly the amount of meat as humans do. They also do not keep their prey in captivity for the duration of their life simply for their dinner. They also do not build awful, pollution emitting (and extremely greedy) factory farms. If you really want to be as "nature intended" then please help yourself to chancing your life in the wild then pouncing on an animal and rending it with your fingernails. Good way to get a headline in the newspaper.

If you only ate veggies and lived in Iceland you be pretty hungry comes December.
Ah, but the world has come a long way hasn't it? There are quite a few year 'round vegetarian restaurants in Iceland now. (A friend of mine has visited there, you can look up information on google as well) Thanks to modern conveniences, they are allowed to ship vegetables pretty much any time of the year. Still, if someone really can't be a vegetarian then they should not do so. They are eating out of absolute necessity. We (Western world as a collective) are not. Most of us on this message board are people who are fully capable of such an (in my opinion) easy task.

A very long time ago, I about to eat a corned beef sandwich, when all of a sudden I looked at it, felt as if I were a cannible eating flesh & could not take a single bite. And haven't since then.

And once you see meat for what it is, you can never look at it in any other way.

The idea of being vegetarian came up when I was 13 and I didn't know beatles of paul yet. my parents didn't agree with me. Now I am, I'm 23!! I can do anything I want. I work with an italian animalist association LIPU (lega italiana protezione uccelli : italian league protection birds... bah translated it's a thing like that) where we are all vegetarian or vegan.

I became a vegetarian when I was about 14 and I was allowed to but I wanted to be for a long time because it just really creeps me out the idea of eating something that was walking around not so long ago and no one knows if animals have feelings or memories it hasn't been proven and just so many people eat meat and it's just everywhere and it causes so many problems. I still have to eat eggs and stuff and fish occasionally because my Mom makes me because she's all your still growing but I really don't like to and at my job I have to deal with meat and it makes me sad I just hope that one day the world won't have to depend on meat and it won't be something that has to be there because people are used to it same with war really if you think about it it's just something people are used to but I feel alot better now that I don't eat meat health wise and mind wise now I just need to get a better job and a less worrying mom :

A true vegan is rarer than rocking horse poop. (Well, not quite: horses are true vegans...) Unless you grow your own, and prepare it (even the condiments and oils and such) then you can't claim to be a true vegan. Seriously, though, the whole compassion thing runs a little to the hypocritical... Just the fact that you live in a hive (or whatever you want to call your urban lifestyle) means that you are part of a group that is denying habitat to another being. If you drive a car, or use a cell phone, or use electricity or natural gas, or coal, or heating oil, or wood to heat your house you are denying animals habitat that they need to survive. Can you say Urban Sprawl? Can you say Global Warming? You deny animals habitat and they die. Plain and simple. However, if you say that you are a vegetarian in order to save your own butt through good health choices, or that it is the only option in order to survive and feed our runaway population growth on this Mother Earth... Then I salute you.

A vegan is someone who does not eat or wear animal products. Not that difficult and I am one.
