Paul McCartney has officially become an oldies act.

By the way, I've been a McCartney fan for a very long time (and have every one of his albums, singles, etc.). So, I have every right to criticize what sounds to me like someone going through the motions. If you want to spend $150 or $250 dollars to see the same old show with absolutely nothing original to it, that is well within your rights. However, I'm very disappointed in his performance and will not spend that kind of money to see the same thing over and over again. By the way, all it would take is to throw in 5 or 6 different songs to give--as Paul likes to say--value for money. This show seemed VERY unoriginal and lazy to me.

First off let me say this, the setlist was very appropriate for a celebration of Liverpool. I can understand McCartney dragging out the same old Beatle songs, but that's as far as it goes! My following comments are in regards to his regular tours and his upcoming tour. It's way way way past time that McCartney changed his setlist! I have been sharing this point of view for years. It's always going to be someones first time seeing McCartney, does that mean that the man has to perform the same basic set of songs for the rest of his life? He's given all the Beatle heads the last twenty plus years, it's not his fault if someone wasn't able to see the shows! Paul McCartney is much more than just a freaking Beatle, he has one of the most amazing careers of any artist! There's just no excuse to play the exact same songs year after year after year. This man has hits from every decade since the 60s and he should be performing them! A whole generation of people came up listening to Wings, in fact they were the biggest group of the 70s, and that's documented fact! How many artist have #1 hits that they've never ever performed live? I find it absolutely amazing that anyone wouldn't want this man to perform as much of his fantastic music as humanly possible?? Yes it's time for Paul McCartney to seriously change his setlist, I'd hate for him to look back on his career and think Woulda, shoulda, coulda. The Beatles have been done, redone, and overdone! Let's all e-mail his guitarist Brian Ray and let him know how we feel. I mention him because I e-mailed him and he answered me back, so he does listen to the fans, and he does share info with McCartney. This upcoming tour will determine a lot as far as McCartney being just an old nastalgia act. If he drags out the same old songs yet again, it will be a shame because Paul McCartney can and should do better!! Fans should expect more. Mr. McCartney stop selling yourself and your music short!
I totally agree with you. I wonder what a setlist would be like if he let the band pick all the songs. I bet Brian, Rusty, Abe and Wix would like something diferent to play also. I think the band was the ones who got him to do "Too Many People" on the last tour. I don't think it is too much to ask for him to change at least 10-15 songs with different ones considering the length of his total career. He could start out by doing MAF songs beside "Dance Tonight", things like "Only Mama Knows" and "House of Wax" (these were done on promtional tours of MAF and very ferw people saw those shows). Beatle songs like "Rocky Racoon" and "Oh Darling" could replace Beatle songs that have been played to death. Instead of "Jet" all the time, do something like "Helen Wheels" from "BOR". Throw out "Letting Go" and "C Moon" and do "Juniors Farm" and "Old Siam Sir". Finally, everyone understands you have to do the "hits' but think McCartney needs to really understand that people appreciate his whole career not just the Beatles and even Wings.

Quit all the negative bitching and be happy that Paul is performing again.

Why are you criticising his choices and performance anyway? I don't think fans have that right. If you're a fan of something, lo and behold it means you actually LIKE that thing. Leave Paul alone, some of us would be escastic just to see him perform live!
You're kidding, right?
I kid not, young skywalker.

Why don't we just ignore this varmit. He keeps on insulting the owner of this forum and the story is getting old. Why don't we just move on and open another thread about how you love the Liverpool Sound Concert? Anyone?

Jorke, to say Paul is lazy and going thru the motions, is incorrect. You may not like the song choices and you are entitled to your opinions. However, he goes all out for every performance and it always feels like an intimate evening. This is not about being lazy, it's about what he feels the majority of each audience wants to hear. Believe it or not, the people who go to multiple shows (I am one of them) are not the majority. There are actually many people who have never seen him. Not one of the people who were actually at the show or any of his recent shows have said, he was lazy or going though the motions. Neither have any of the reviews. These classic songs have been called anthems, because people love to sing along with him. I don't know about you, but everytime I hear Let It Be, whether it's live, my cd or on the radio, I get a chill up my spine. he may ask his back up band for suggestions, but this is his show and his reputation on the line, good or bad, they songs will always be his choices.

Was the "new"song that Paul played at yesterday's show (In Liverpool) from the Flaming Pie sessions?

Denny C, Fair enough. Your point of view is certainly a valid one. As far as the childish responses from others, oh well.

some mccartney fans are so annoying. how can you defend paul for not changing any songs on the set list? the guy has a huge selection to choose from...i'd say he needs to stop being lazy and practice something he hasnt done in a while, like a real musician. i can understand why he has to play the mega hits like let it be and yesterday, but drive my car, got to get you into my life, etc...are ridiculous choices. either way i will go see him. but people who are bitching out other fans for wanting a change in the setlist are just being self rightous and yearning for a chance to show how special of a mccartney fan they are. stop being blind followers. i vote for change.
-
I agree with Denny. Let's not equate Paul's choice of songs with being lazy. His actual performance is anything but lazy.
-
Some Macca fans are irritating and have no sense of importance! No matter what you all say and complain about what Paul is going to play is quite pathetic! I don't care what Paul plays as long as I see him sing and play songs on the stage! Now, that is a true fan! Another varmit is whining! : DYA! He's 65 years old and tired! What do you expect from Paul? For God sakes! Some of you are irrational and no pity at Paul at all! When he was 19, I was 12! Now, figure it out folks! These people don't know what lazy mean : The set list is pure brilliant and the rest of the 36, 000 audience in Liverpool Sound Concert were satisfied and happy!
-
Paul is still a truly amazing talent, both vocally and in terms of his still-potent writing ability. That said, I don't think we'll ever see much of a change in his setlist - we'll never hear "Junior's Farm" or "Letting Go" or "Silly Love Songs" or "Venus & Mars/Rockshow" live again for the same reason we'll never see the Ricky again...he's just gotten really really set in his ways and there's just no changing that. As for the recent show, I can't believe we got "C Moon" yet again, but didn't get "Only Mama Knows"... Still hoping that a miraculous set change might happen for the next official tour though.....

Hello All - By the way for me...this show was awesome and anyone who does not understand what was happening there on that stage Sunday is uninformed and historically limited...sorry... Paul I luv ya..you did your mates proud!! It was a magical night OK here are the comments I would highlight: This concert was Macca paying homage to Liverpool. He's not going to pay homage to Liverpool by playing obscure B-sides to please bored fans that have seen him live 32 times. All the songs he played at the Liverpool Sound Concert were all great! It was 100% a brilliant show! I'm so glad to know people will be staying home when the next tour comes around. More tickets for those of us who love want to go. Great show tonight. Any chance that the naysayers on this board will understand this and get over their fantasies that Paul will perform *their* favorite songs, while neglecting the greatest songbook in rock history? I don't think so... Fantastic show, Paul. Since the Beatles put Liverpool on the music world's map I think it's only right he did so many songs from that era. I am very happy that Paul still wants to perform, and he can still outrock just about anybody on the planet. I will be honored if he tours and I can see him again! What's ironic is that you call his "lack of originality pathetic". That's odd - didn't he write most of those songs? And you're the one using the tired and recycled insults to attack a talented musician who is just trying to make people happy. Who lacks originality here?? I've seen the video and the changing to Give Peace A Chance was absolutely planned. ...Something was included because Olivia was in the audience and the fact that Yoko was there why A day in the life ended with give peace a chance. A day in the life was a goose pimple moment, the emotion in Maccas voice... The whole production of this concert was brilliant. Get a life... If fans are tired of these songs, make room for new fans. Me, I love the songs, the atsmosphere, the man. I will keep on going. Paul can sing the f**king phone book and I'll be there........ God, some people are never happy, they look for any chance to p*ss and moan. Don't like the setlist? Stay home. Easy enough, eh? I don't care what Paul plays as long as I see him sing and play songs on the stage!

The show was great - incredible, and I enjoyed every minute of it. But I just have to wonder - why only one song from his latest album? There are some very good songs deserving of the live treatment only Paul can give - songs like "Ever Present Past", "Mr. Bellamy" and more. But I have to admit, Paul has sung much of MAF live - "That Was Me", "House of Wax", "Only Mama Knows" and "Dance Tonight" off the top of my head.

I haven't heard the live version in question...but I believe it was this:

I second the motion. I accept that he needs to do some hits and a fair number of Beatles songs to keep the non-fans from getting restless, but that's easily accomplished while giving the set some variety. Using the set list posted at the beginning of this thread, let me suggest the following: DROP: Long and Winding Road Blackbird Jet Let Me Roll It Live and Let Die Eleanor Rigby C Moon Penny Lane ADD Junior's Farm I'm Looking Through You Only Mama Knows Lovely Rita Friends to Go No More Lonely Nights That Was Me Baby's Request

DrivinFan:

I'm not quite sure...but by Paul's appearance in the video, I think it pre-dates the Flaming Pie era...it looks to be more so from the Flowers in the Dirt/Off The Ground era...

Insanity! Forcing the 66 years old to do something, which he doesn't want to do! 99.99 of his fans adore his music and love him the way he is! So, please don't push so hard because everything you are hope for would only go to the trash bin. People would only blame Paul if his concert at Liverpool Sound were a flop! Not a fan!
