Paul McCartney has officially become an oldies act.
-
I can agree that Paul's set-lists could be more inclusive, but a true performer and a true recording artist are two different entities. Tina Turner said it best: A good show is a good show. I don't think Paul has been given enough credit for the '05 setlist. And he is by no means an "oldies" artist: Oldies acts don't have platinum-selling albums of new material. -a

He is not a "oldies" artist but his concerts are considered by quite a few people as getting to that stage. McCartney has had critically acclaimed records and barely plays songs from them in concert. How many has he done in one concert from "Flaming Pie"? I believe he did 4 from "CHAOS" (last tour)but have seen many other artists do more songs from their current record. It will be interesting to see how many songs from MAF McCcartney will perform live if he tours again.

Music delivered to the audience with a multi media assault to all the senses simply LIVES more. (Pardon the pun).
I don't think so. Truly good music doesn't need any bells and whistles to be performed live, IMHO. I am old and jaded and I don't go to concerts for light shows or videos anymore. I go to see and hear the performer and the music. I love when performers try the solo acoustic format. Then you really can hear the songs at their stripped-down core. Like when Paul takes the stage alone and performs "Blackbird" and "I Will" and "Fool on the Hill." Then it's just Paul and his music. THAT's why I am there. I could care less about all the video screens he uses, to be honest. I still wish he would do an entire concert in this format someday. Then I wouldn't care what was on the setlist.

If McCartney did a show with just him and an acoustic guitar, I would be totally dissappointed! That's not the kind of artist McCartney is, sure it's one aspect of him but that's the problem, it's just one aspect. McCartney himself isn't an oldies act, but his shows for the last twenty years have been for the most part. Think about this, McCartney has tons and I do mean tons of music that he could use on stage, this man could put together a total show of music that has never ever been performed live, and I'm talking about good quality music! I'm not against performing the Beatles, but if you are going to do it then it's time to open it up. I totally understand doing all your own Beatle songs first, but now if your going to continue to do Beatle songs then you need to branch out, Hey Jude and Let It Be have been driven into the ground! when he does change it for the most part he seems to choose the wrong songs, You Won't See Me and I'll Get You?? I did love the fact that he dusted off She's A Woman. Imagine McCartney and his band ripping thru... Revolution One After 909 Day Tripper Run For Your Life Everybodies Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey Yeah, they're Lennon songs mostly but so what, who else has the right besides McCartney and Ringo to perform anything Beatles? Also these songs would absolutely rock the house. It's not just the Wings and solo material that needs changing, it's also the Beatle material as well!
-
Revolution would be great with the band. I would love to see I Want to Hold Your Hand too.
-
how does I want to hold your hand, Revolution, or She's a woman, or any Wings song make him less of an oldies act. They are very old songs. but I see this thread with the insulting title is still going strong. Paul puts on a great show, basically full of non stop classics that bring people to tears and to their feet. I've been to shows where nobody sits down from start to finish. Start playing some obscure gems, some of us (myself included will remain on their feet) but the rest of the arena will have a seat, a beer or a pee. I can't wait for the next show.

Is a top 10 Wings or solo McCartney song obscure? I think "In Spite of Danger" and "I'll Get You" are pretty obscure even though they are Beatle songs but he played them in concert. I think this whole thread can be wrapped up by saying their are two different camps of McCartney fans. I believe it breaks down to Beatle/McCartney fans and McCartney fans. The Beatle/McCartney fans like the last few setlists and the McCartney fans want to hear more from his entire musical career.
-
Doing Lennon songs like Revolution and Day Tripper would make him even more of an oldies act since he didn't even write them. The only Lennon song he has played consistently on tour is Please Please Me which he probably got away with because it's not really a typical classic John song. If he starts to play multiple Lennon classics on tour the critics will tear him apart.

I love the set-list for his show at the O'lympia in Paris last year. Whatever Paul does, I hope he keeps "That Was Me" in the show. Rockin. -a
-
As a long time fan (since 1964) I appreciate hearing the standards and I am glad Sir Paul plays these.
-
If McCartney is performing totally new, different, never performed before songs, even though some of those songs may be old, his actual act or show wouldn't be old because it's a show no one has ever seen before. If no one has ever seen it, how can it be old? Performing the same basic setlist year after year is what has gotten old and has us answering the question in the first place.

This is exactly what so of us mean about playing different songs. People in Olympia may not have heard "That Was Me" before but I am sure they enjoyed it once they heard it because it is a good rockin song.

right! and maybe they went to find out what album that song was on, and bought a copy of Memory Almost Full to add to their collection, and then heard the rest of the great songs on that album!! I know some people don't like to hear songs they don't know at concerts, and only want to hear familiar songs. I find that rather sad and limiting. A concert is a great place to find something new to listen to from a band that you already liked enough to pay money to see live! People are already there to hear Paul do all the great Beatles tunes, so if he tosses in some solo/Wings stuff, it's a bonus for us and a new treat for everyone else!!!

McCartney is going to perform around 20 Beatle songs in a show so I don't understand why people get upset if others want to see something different from his solo or Wings days. I am like you and enjoy hearing the new songs especially since I have loved his latest records (CHAOS, MAF)
-
That's the problem I have with his shows now, 20 Beatle songs is entirely too many! As I've posted over and over, he needs to balance it out, give all phases of his career equal time on stage. McCartney really averages about 36 songs per show, so his setlist should look more like this. 12 Beatles 12 Wings 12 Solo That gives McCartney plenty of chances to pick some real new and different cream from his vast crop of material. I've posted this before so you guys know that it's up to McCartney how he wants to mix these up so the audience is hit with surprise after surprise. In all honesty, do you guys really think anyone is getting the message to McCartney that people are asking for a setlist change?
-
Honestly? No. He'll perform what he jolly well wants to imho.

You mean like in 2005? When over 44% of his set had never been played for US audiences?
-
I wonder if the Quebec setlist will be basically the same as Liverpool and Kiev shows. I have a feeling he might do "Michelle" so he can sing in "French" a tiny bit.
-
Ding! we have a winner here with "Michelle".
-
Here's McCartney's 2005 setlist, I'd hardly say that most of this hadn't been performed in America before! I've put the letter B by all the ones that have been performed in America before. Magical Mystery Tour - B Flaming Pie Jet - B I'll Get You Drive My Car - B Till There Was You Let Me Roll It (Foxy Lady jam) - B Got to Get You In My Life - B Fine Line I'm Amazed - B Long and Winding Road - B In Spite Of All The Danger I Will Jenny Wren For No One - B Fixing a Hole piano - B English Tea Yellow Submarine I'll Follow the Sun Follow Me Blackbird -B Eleanor Rigby - B Too Many People She Came In Through The Bathroom Window Good Day Sunshine - B Band on the Run - B Penny Lane - B I've Got A Feeling - B Back in the USSR - B Hey Jude - B Live and Let Die - B ENCORES Yesterday - B Get Back - B Helter Skelter MORE ENCORES Please Please Me Let it Be - B Sgt. Pepper's (Reprise) / The End - B That is entirely too many songs repeated yet again from how many other tours? Paul McCartney seriously needs to change his setlist!
