Paul McCartney has officially become an oldies act.

Maybe there should be a poll which we list our 20 or so songs for the set list. Then have him pick the top 20 choices for the concert. But you know what would happen. The set list will probably be the same , (maybe one or to new ones of his choice), as he's been doing because that's what most fans want to hear.

I am curious what people who were there in the 70´s though about Paul ditching the Beatles songs for so many years! Anyway, it's a privilege for us to even be having the chance to "wish" for set lists still, but Paul never practice too much before his concerts, call him comfortable, but that's wrong also because then he could be staying home instead of touring! I think the simplest reason why he doesn't do the songs we also want to hear is because he doesn't like them as much as his Beatles songs! Call it oldies-act, sure what makes the difference. But I love all of the mentioned set lists, I love to hear the songs never played, hey I'd even wanna hear Bip-Bop over C'moon, but doubt it will happen!

I saw Wings in 1976 in MSG in NYC. The crowd went crazy over the show and did not care that there were very few Beatle songs. McCartney has never had a better opening to a show than "Venus and Mars/Rock Show" and the screaming was amazing the minute the lights shined on McCartney the first time. "Yesterday" got a incredible ovation but remember it was the first time anybody ever saw him perform it live. The tour was a huge sucess and sold old out immediately even though the setlist was 95% Wings.

In your setlist, there is no song of the old setlist. I think there has to be some, I think Paul has a good reason why he takes this setlist. He takes song wich he knows people in the audience like, en where they can sing alon with (Hey Jude). I also want 'Sgt. Peppers/The End' in the setlist!
I'd much rather hear a full 'Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End sequence (ala 1989/90)...but mostly, I agree with you. While I can certainly see room for variation, there are a number of songs that simply command to be included in the set list every tour. And I do think that while it probably doesn't happen at the pace some here would like, Paul has given us a variety in his various tours, starting with the 1989/90 tour. Also, I once compiled a list of all the songs he's performed during each tour and while I don't remember the exact number of songs, it was an amount that would be worth 3 and a half set lists. And this was before his 2005 tour where he added even more variation. If I recall correctly, these were new additions in 2005: Songs from current album at the time: Fine Line Follow Me Jenny Wren English Garden Songs from his back catalog: In spite Of All The Danger I will Too Many People She Came In Through The Bathroom Window I've Got A Feeling Helter Skelter Please Please Me I'll Get You Till There Was You I'll follow The Sun Flaming Pie For No One Obviously I referring to new to US tour set lists since a couple of these were debuted the previous year during the short European Summer tour which concluded with the Glastonbury show. But in general, I think you get the point that this shows a 14 song (out of 30-something) variance from previous tours. And if you don't count the new ones inserted to promote the Chaos and Creation, that's still a 11 song variance. That's approximately a third of the set list revamped. Additionally, during most of these tours, there are songs that might be repeats from some past tour but are not regular set list inclusions.

Helter Skelter was a great song to see done live.

Talking about "oldies"... All this whining and complaining and pleading about set lists gets very old--!!! The majority of fans at a Macca concert are thrilled to be there no matter what's played, isn't that right?
If you don't like the "whining" and "complaining" read the thousands of other threads on this site. You maybe be right that the majority of fans don't care what he plays but there are some that like something different for their $100-250 a ticket. These people have supported every McCartney tour and I am willing to bet buy his new records which is probably not the same as the majority that are thrilled to be there no matter what he plays.

As I've said, many of McCartney's songs may be old, but his act doesn't have to be old! He could have a totally new and different act by changing his setlist. I saw Wings on June 10th, 1976 at the Seattle Kingdome, the night the Wings Over America album was recorded! I can share with you all, that night absolutely no one was even thinking about the Beatles!! Wings stepped on stage and rocked so hard that the crowd never ever stopped screaming. They were their own band performing their own material, the very few Beatle songs were just extra treats. To this very day it is still the very best concert I've ever attended in my life! Contrary to the popular misconception, Wings rocked and they rocked hard.

I think what you seem to be forgetting is that Wings was a relatively new band then, and they were touring in support of new albums. This is just a Paul McCartney tour, and it's touring to play songs from all of his periods of music, and yes, I know it's a shame for you that he's going to always play more Beatles than Wings, but you just have to accept it. Instead of wishing that he'd play those songs again I guess you can just cherish the memories you have of hearing them live that night? I have the Wings over America set, it's fantastic.

I totally agree with what Andy said way back on page 10. I was there. The people beside us had never seen Paul play before. They were totally thrilled with every song that he sang for us at Anfield. They kept asking us if Paul would be playing Hey Jude. Well, we knew the answer to that, but they obviously didn't. Paul will never please die hard fans and fans who have never seen him before. He has to attempt to please both. Hence, the bathroom songs.

This is his Kiev setlist, I think it's a good one ...Except for one thing... THROW 'Long and winding road' AND 'C moon' OUT! 'Drive My Car' 'Jet' 'All My Loving' 'Only Mama Knows' 'Flaming Pie' 'Got To Get You Into My Life' 'Let Me Roll It' 'C Moon' 'My Love' 'Let 'Em In' 'The Long And Winding Road' 'Dance Tonight' 'Blackbird' 'Calico Skies' 'I'll Follow The Sun' 'Mrs Vanderbilt' 'Eleanor Rigby' 'Something' 'Good Day Sunshine' 'Penny Lane' 'Band On The Run' 'Birthday' 'Back In The USSR' 'I Got A Feeling' 'Live And Let Die' 'Let It Be' 'Hey Jude' 'A Day In The Life/Give Peace A Chance' 'Lady Madonna' 'Get Back' 'I Saw Her Standing There' 'Yesterday' 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band'

I'm not asking McCartney to play what some of you love to call bathroom songs! Me personally, I want McCartney to choose from the very best of his Wings and solo material, and that is definitely not bathroom songs!! A few people go to the bathroom and a whole myth gets started?? Many of you keep saying McCartney has to play more Beatles than anything else, why?? There's no logical explanation for McCartneys setlist to continue to be so Beatle heavy. He's just about performed every one of his Beatles songs, and he's performed them more than once. A more balanced setlist would still give all the Beatle heads their required fix, all the biggies would still be included, so why does there have to be more Beatle songs? Paul McCartney is more than just a Beatle, and his Wings and solo music is loved all over the world as well. Mrs Vandebilt being performed in Kiev is a perfect example. I had no idea that song was such a big hit for them in that country? So how many of his post Beatle songs might mean something to different people all over the world, just another reason why he should be performing more of that material. We already know what the Beatles mean, they've been done, redone, and overdone! As I posted, a more balanced setlist would satisfy the newbie as well as the veteran. McCartney has the songs to do it, and he should be performing them!

I like the Beatles more then I like Wings. And I think many others think the same. But, I still think Paul's got a good reason for his setlist.
-
Yeah, the same old worn out, repetitive, predictable, familiar, common, boring reason! I don't want the same thing shoved down my throat year after year, tour after tour! Give me the fantastic variety of Paul McCartney's music!

[quote="Ever-Present-Paul"]I like the Beatles more then I like Wings. And I think many others think the same. But, I still think Paul's got a good reason for his setlist. You're right to think many people think like you, BUT there are also many people that DON'T think like you. I'm in total agreement with 'left hand man'; Paul has played all those Beatle songs so much that it's leading a lot of us to wonder why he's skipping over a lot of great songs he's put out since 1970. If this was his first time performing in 40 years, I could see why he'd want to play two thirds of his show with iconic songs from his first band, but he's been doing that for two decades at the expense of no longer playing many equally good and sometimes more popular songs from his whole career later. As to why Paul has a good reason for his setlist, yes, I believe he had a good reason for this similar setlist when he played a Beatles heavy tour in 1989/90. He had glossed over his Beatles past during his last world tour in 1975/76 because he had great songs and albums from Wings which were number 1 all over the place. (I don't count Wings' last tour aborted with his arrest in Japan). So finally it seemed like the right time to proudly play his own fantastic compositions from the Beatles day. I think the reason behind this thread is that he's used this same logic and reasoning for the past 20 years (getting old) and in the meantime, he's had to skip much of his post-Beatles work (variety is the spice of life). Besides, during the 70's, John Lennon was still alive and they had not worked out all the baggage between them. Maybe that was part of the reason Paul didn't play so many Beatle songs, for fear that John would call him an oldies act!
-
Both John and George played Beatles songs live in the 70's before Paul did.
-
Yes, but their shows weren't 2/3 Beatles songs, were they?
-
George's Live in Japan is pretty heavy on Beatles, but not the majority. Loved when he did Piggies. It's one of my top five live albums.

Just watched 'Back in the US', and Paul said: ¨I just sit down, and think of what will people want to hear me perform live¨ And he puts that in his setlist.

It would be nice if he didn't think for us.(that's the arrogance of PM) Maybe he should ask us.

The other thing to remember is Harrison did not have the same volume of songs outside of the Beatles as McCartney. While Harrison had some commerical success, it is not close to the suceess McCartney had with Wings and his solo work. I saw Harrison on his "Dark Horse" tour and there were very few Beatle songs and he changed the musical arrangement on some of them also.
