Paul McCartney has officially become an oldies act.

I want everyone to notice, I'm never disrespectful, I never call anyone names, and I try to never be offensive.
I'm not either. It all just got a bit much though. You just post the same thing over and over. Don't try to make it look like I'm a bad guy. I think you just need to understand that many people will be seeing him for the first time ever... I am 16 years old. I live in Australia. He hasn't been here since I was 2 years old. My ideal setlist is the "Back In The World" setlist with Helter Skelter instead of Mother Nature's Son. I can't help that. I understand you've seen him more than once. But you just need to see it from both sides here.
I agree. I'm 14 years old, and never seen Paul live. I want to go to his concert if he comes to Holland. And then, I would like the setlist he uses at the moment. I want to hear him performing Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, and Hey Jude! So I think he should see what the most people like, and put those in the setlist. And if you go twice to a concert, you can imagine that he'll do songs wich he performed earlier.

"I had a ticket to go to the Liverpool sound gig,but after seeing my premium seat at the Kop end, i decided not to go and get a refund instead. Having been a fan for 33 years and been to every tour since the last Wings jaunt,it really is sad to see Paul going through the motions in his concerts. It really hurts me to say his shows are so predictable now,it's as though his post Beatle career has been a complete waste of time. " All the acts from the past are the same. They all play their hits. Sometimes they throw in a new one. But when you have as many hits as Sir does, it's really hard to pick. Be thankful he's still around for us to enjoy. Many of the acts I see gaining popularity today I can't see still being around in 20 years for our children. At least we can relive our past. Our children don't have too much to look forward to. Just my opinion.

Some say I keep saying the same thing over and over, well have you noticed that many of you are saying the same thing over and over and over as well? Example, how many times, I repeat, how many times have some on this forum made the statement that McCartney has to perform the same setlist because it may be someones first time seeing him, how many times?? Did I even once come back and call someone a name, or tell them to give it a rest or anything of the sort? No I did not, I just responded with my honest opinion. I still don't get this first time seeing McCartney statement anyway? If McCartney decided to change his setlist what could any of us do about it? Whether it was your first time or your last time if McCartney decided to change his setlist you would have to enjoy whatever he performed. So the first time seeing him statement just doesn't cut it. Because it's someones first time, does that mean the man has to play the same songs for the rest of his life! As I said before, what true fan would penalize the man like that? Also as I posted earlier, McCartney has given everyone the last twenty years to see his Beatle heavy show, it's not his fault if someone couldn't make it. I've had to travel very long distances to see him myself. Once again I've never said he shouldn't perform any Beatles, but after twenty years of Beatle heavy shows, it's time for the other phases of his career to get some attention. The type setlist I suggested earlier gives every one of his fans plenty of what they like, a show that is very representative of Paul McCartneys entire fantastic career!

FWIW, I understand what the kids are saying and I understand why others say to play different songs. You're both right. If I had to make a choice though, I'd rather have the young kids have the same enjoyment and opportunity I had long ago. In fact, my family and I, if there is a tour in the US, will be sitting it out, so others who haven't had the chance can get in to see him live.
-
Jaipur, that shouldn't be necessary though, with a catalog as rich and as full as McCartney's a properly balanced setlist will give everyone what they want and like. The newbie as well as the veteran will be happy and satisfied. Paul McCartney has the songs to do it!

C'mon....Paul could take the New York City phone book and sing every entry on every page and I'd be there to see him. Even if he sang it in Latin.

Apologies to those who may have seen me post this idea on other forums or email lists, but with discussion turning towards Paul's setlist (once again), I just can't help myself... So, Paul obviously is comfortable performing pretty much the same setlist every night (vocal chords willing). The fact that he doesn't mix it up night after night shows this - he's done it this way virtually his entire career. He's also mentioned that due to the lighting effects, etc., it's difficult to alter things significantly from night to night. Whether this is seen as a convenient "excuse", or a valid reason, seems to be a source of some debate for fans. However, on occasion, he'll throw in a "special" number for the local crowds. Liverpool's got "Maggie Mae" (2003) & "Hippy Hippy Shake (200. In '93, he added "Kansas City" to his Kansas City performance. He's done "Midnight Special" in Texas, "Mull of Kintyre" in Scotland (and Canada), "All My Trials" once upon a time, Mrs. Vandebilt for Ukraine, etc. I think Paul should pick one song "slot" for the night. Let's say it's the 9th song of the evening. Then, perform something different every night of the tour in that slot. Lighting & effects would remain the same for the other 35 songs - they'd just have one that was different each night (but in the same spot in the setlist). What would he play? Well, numbers like the above! I saw his tour-closing show in Chicago in '90, and he re-inserted "Twenty Flight Rock" into the setlist, just because of the "sent to Chicago for repairs" line. Paul had an obvious blast with that particular song that night, just as he always seems to do when he does one of these "unique" numbers. He could dig deep in his solo catalog, and tell a brief story about his choice. He could do tributes to other artists, or golden oldies - which he obviously has a fondness for. For example, if he plays Seattle, maybe do a Hendrix cover (for Jimi's hometown), since he often waxes in interviews about how much he enjoyed Jimi. Or play an old Elvis/Carl Perkins or Fats Domino number in the Deep South. Or whatever. Another key would be to tell the crowd what inspired him to play that particular song for that particular audience. He should point out that they would be the only audience of the tour to hear that song: that way, even if he's digging deep in his solo catalog, folks might actually listen, rather than heading to buy another beer... If he played 50 shows, he'd have 50 unique recordings - which would make for a pretty intriguing post-tour live cd set. Certainly more interesting than the nth live version of "Long & Winding Road". I've seen some folks say this would be too "challenging" for him & the band to basically learn a "new" song each night. I don't buy this for a second - these guys are all world-class musicians, and I think they'd relish the chance to work on something at their (notoriously long) soundchecks and perform it that evening. Relearning about three songs/week would be a breeze (and a blast) for these guys... While this wouldn't please those who are campaigning for wholesale revisions to his setlist, it would enliven the tour considerably. Paul & the band would get to stretch (just a little) each night, each audience would have a special "treat" performance, and he'd wind up with a backlog of great live recordings that would make for a great post-tour souvenir (while the tour dvd could focus more on a single show - making us fans buy both, of course).

So there should be absolutely no problem with him changing up his setlist then. The point once again is the fact that at least a change in setlist would give people something to think about in regards as to whether he is an oldies act or not. I say a change would be great, as I posted earlier, some of the songs may be old, but at least with a change of setlist, McCartney's act would no longer be old, or predictable, or repetitive, or common, or so familiar, and definitely not boring. As it is now, I've heard his setlist described by all those terms, and that just can't be good.
-
wouldn't it be a great idea, to put a video on where John Lennon sings a song, and then at some moments put the video off and then Paul sings along, and so there is a duet with Paul and John. This can be done with another singer too, I only picked John as an example.
-
I think there's waaaaayyyyyy too much attention being paid to this set list thing. From what I've heard, Paul is setting up a two year FINAL.....yes I said FINAL world tour. He wants to spend more family time with his new daughter Bea and who can blame him. He gave most of his life to us, the fans. So I say Paul....whatever you choose to perform is fine with me and is fine with any true fan who appreciates what you've given us....your music AND your youth. I've seen you twice in concert and am planning on seeing you at least twice more during your next tour. I will break down and cry when you take that final bow knowing this is it (heck I did in 2005 when you broke into "Till There Was You"). My only regret was being born slightly too late to see you with John, George and Ringo. And before I forget.....THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING. You've helped me more than you'll ever know through A LOT of tough, troubled times and I'm betting I'm not the only one. So sing anything you want. Chances are I'll know the lyrics and will be joining you.

Paul McCartney has too many of his own songs that are just screaming to be performed live, why should he have to sing other peoples music?? I could understand it somewhat if he was out of material, but he hasn't even scratched the surface of his fantastic catalog, so there's just no need to play someone elses music. It's a paul McCartney concert, he should play his songs. These are just begging to get some tour attention... Juniors Farm The Mess Getting Closer 1985 I've Had Enough Listen To What The Man Said Silly Love Songs Rockestra Theme Hi Hi Hi No More Lonely Nights Take It Away Girlschool One Of These Days Somebody Who Cares This Never Happened Before Stranglehold Cafe On The Left Bank Big Barn Bed Smile Away Only Mama Knows House of Wax That Was Me About You These are but a few, there's just no need for McCartney to perform other artist music, of course this is just my opinion!

By George (and John and Ringo and Paul)--she's got it!! (Maybe) Macca and his great band should make a very special DVD performing many of the songs in the above post, other Wings tunes too as well as lesser known new material from the 2000s. Man he could sell a gazillion of these. A special concert for DVD viewers, not a live audience. He could still have a blast performing these as if at a real concert and the band would have a big time. And we sure as s---t would, would be fab !! No? Isn't this feasible? And very desirable? Almost as good as seeing him perform this more esoteric, if that's the right word, fare "live." And without having to fight the crowds and search for a parking space, or travel hundreds, even thousands of miles. And you could watch this over and over again whenever you want.

Saying your a Paul McCartney fan vs. a Beatles fan is like saying your a Brain Wilson fan vs a Beach Boy fan. What came first the chicken or the egg Name their biggest hits and it will always be when they were a joint effort. I think Paul would agree there were more creative period in his life. I think the fans want to hear those songs..He throwing his new stuff out there. Its only so long of a concert. I don't want to go to a Elvis concert and her him singing his gospel tunes over Blue Swede shoes. I'd actually like to see Paul's sing his favorite songs he didn't write like early rock and rolls and sing his version
-
Appletart2, you're right a concert is only so long, that's why his setlist should be more balanced. A Beatle fan wants to hear the Beatles, a McCartney fan wants to hear music equally from all phases of his career. SusyluvsPaul, McCartney and his band performing songs to no one, that DVD sounds sterile and lifeless. Live Rock and roll is best performed in front of people, not some empty room or studio. I like the idea of a live DVD and CD of this material, but it should be recorded from shows he's performed in front of people.
-
SusyLuvsPaul:
A special concert for DVD viewers, not a live audience.
I like that idea. Most recent concert dvds tend to focus too much on the audience anyway so a shift back to the perfomers would be a good thing. The 'one hand clapping' performance was done in studio without an audience and that was pretty cool.

Yes, I think that'll be a fine setlist

Yes, he is throwing his new stuff out there and it is excellent. Let's hear more of the new stuff !! His last two records(MAF, CHAOS) won Grammy nominations so it is not like he would be performing inferior songs. McCartney seems to do around 33-35 songs most concerts. Would any Beatle fan be that disappointed if he "only" did 15 songs from the Beatles ? That would be close to 1/2 the concert and could be stategically placed during the show to make everyone happy. Nobody does 50's cover versions better than McCartney but he has so many of his own songs he never did live that I would rather hear him perform those songs. Personally, I think it would be cool if he did a song like "Come and Get It" which he wrote and gave to the group Badfinger.

I've seen One Hand Clapping, and it's lifeless and sterile. The video of Juniors Farm from that performance is evidence, they are all just standing around, none of the energy of a truly live performance. Have you guys forgotten, this is rock and roll, it's ment to be performed in front of people, not standing around playing to four walls?? Charlie D, your setlist is pretty good, it still contains too many Beatles songs and it doesn't contain enough of McCartneys fantastic Wings and solo rockers.

I just saw part 1 of the Kiev concert, And he's doing a whole new setlist then he normally does.
