Paul McCartney has officially become an oldies act.

Just saw the footage for Mrs. Vanderbilt -- it was really cool. Actually it wetted my appetitie even more for some solo variety -- hopefully it has that affect on Paul, he seemed into that song.
That is great news and if he enjoyed playing it maybe he will have a bit more variety on a full tour. How did he sound singing it?

He sounded great, actually it was one of the better sung songs from him. Frankly, when I saw that one on the set list I wondered how well he'd do with it, because the song has certain voice pitches that remind me a little of Fine Line in places, in particular the part where he goes "I've got plenty of time on my own" -- even though those two songs are totally different. On his last tour, I thought his voice was great with the possible exception of on Fine Line. But yeah he pulls of Mrs Vanderbilt without breaking a sweat.

And they chose Mrs. Vanderbilt? I mean... really?

I love the song and I'm thrilled that he performed it... but yeah, it did strike me as a pretty odd choice.

It had 25 % of the vote. Number 2 on the list, "London Town" had 20 %!!! Last week it was still on the top of the list so we could have heard "London Town" instead.

Did he sound good the whole concert? It seemed in the Liverpool performance he was kind of shaky according to a few posts.

From what I heard (through the repeated broadcast which was provided through a link earlier in the thread), he sounded a bit shaky to start but was kicking some serious azz by mid show...almost like he just needed to warm up.

"It seemed in the Liverpool performance he was kind of shaky according to a few posts." According to me ( and I was in Anfield about 6th row front-center ) he sounded great! I also saw and listened to the BBC video and audio afterwards and could see how someone could have gotten the "shaky" impression as the audio was not so smooth. Live, he was great with nary a waver in his voice. You would have to ask someone about his voice who was actually there (in Kiev) as I don't believe any feed over the internet could be relied upon to be a true representation of the actual sound.

He listened and played Mrs. Vanderbilt, interesting and great choice. he always changes it up a little. I'll follow the Sun was new for the last tour, etc. I hope you are all not disappointed if it's not changed up too much. Sounds like it was a great concert and not an oldies act, like this thread title will have you believe.

I have to admit-I would love to hear "Junior's Farm" on his next tour......

Denny C, come on now basically his show in Kiev was his same old act. One song does not a new show make. Thrilled to see Only Mama Knows back in the setlist, he should keep that one in for the upcoming tour. This type setlist is fine for special shows like Liverpool and Kiev, but if he pulls out this setlist for his upcoming world tour, you might as well get ready for all the setlist complaints, and I will be one of the main ones complaining!! This is McCartneys chance to put together a really special world tour filled with fantastic songs that haven't been played in years or never before, I hope he rises to the occasion.
-
Oh will you give it a rest FCS. I really don't know why you come on here. I 'm sure its just to wind everyone up. Or are you really Paul having a big laugh at us all ?
-
It would definitely be more exciting to see Paul pull out a huge variety of songs during the world tour. We could start a McCartney pool like the Dylan fans (www.theneverendingpool.com) That being said - I'm ecstatic he did play Mrs. Vandebilt - that's an awesome song and I hope to god he keeps it on the set list! Paul does play to please the crowd, and that's what pleases him. He goes out and puts on a show - a spectacle - and one of the best ones in the industry. He isn't interested in doing a really artsy show, or having a band that really stretches musical limits or challenges the audience. That's fine - he does what he wants to do and if we don't like it we don't have to go. I would never pay the money to follow Paul around the USA, to see the same show night after night after night. However, if that's the experience you are looking for there are many other acts out there you can follow.

Susan Hickman, no I will not give it a rest, that's the problem now, too many people have given it a rest!! paul McCartney is one of the greatest entertainers in the whole world, and I want to hear as much of his music live as I possibly can. His career was and is more than just the freaking Beatles! I fully realize that he may never ever do the type show I want, but that doesn't mean that I'm just going to be a blind follower and not try and let the man know how much I and many others would love to hear more of his music on stage. If you're happy with basically the same show year after year and tour after tour, good for you, me I expect someone as brilliant as Paul McCartney to be better than that! Also, I have never ever told anyone to give it a rest when they continually say that McCartney is going to perform mostly Beatles. Even though I may disagree, I respect their opinion, so please return the favor and respect mine, because it isn't going to change! Paul McCartney seriously needs to change his setlist!!
-
Was that Ukrainian site that held the poll actually officially affiliated with the Kiev concert? Or was it just a fansite? If it were just the latter, what's stopping us PM.com posters from starting our own site where we vote on songs we want to hear Paul play? I mean, if the results from some unofficial poll influenced him to play Mrs. Vandebilt, why wouldn't a poll from the loyal denizens of his official forum have the same effect?
-
I was trying to figure out who Susan Hickman wanted to give a rest, who was this "FCS" she was rallying against since "left hand man" seemed to express the opinion that ticked her off. Silly me, was she using the Lord's name in vain? shock No need to resort to that, heh?!? ? Surely, we're able to get our opinions across without being acrimonious. You may not know why "left hand man" comes on this thread to express HIS opinion but I do, a and wholeheartedly agree with that opinion. But even if I didn't, I would try to use logical argumentation to back up why I thought MY take on the subject was what I thought or was trying to convince everyone else. If "left hand man" really is Paul having a big laugh at us, more power to him! The man has a sense of humor. Cheers! D

All you have to do is watch the youtube clip of McCartney doing "Mrs. Vanderbilt" and it proves your point. He is doing a great song from BOR and seems to be having fun playing it. The crowd in Kiev is going wild and it is not a Beatle song !!

EXACTLY !!! Some people are SO touchy. Want the right to express their opinion yet when criticized immediatley throw their toys out of the pram! Enough said. I am backing out of this now so don't wast your time & effort responding as I will no longer read this thread.

As much as I loved hearing Mrs. Vanderbilt I don't think the positive reception in Kiev proves anything since it's his most popular song there. Apparently it's their Hey Jude, Yesterday, Let It Be so it may prove the exact opposite, i.e. that people want to hear the crowd pleasers. While I hope he keeps it in future set lists I'm not expecting the average American/European concert goer to go nuts over it.

Paul would have seen the crowd go nuts when he was doing Mrs V, and surely that is encouraging for us all who want him to wheel out more Wings. I hope he goes to bed thinking, "Gee they loved that song, maybe I should do some more Wings stuff..."
