Paul McCartney has officially become an oldies act.

I remember back in the 70s with all the Wings tours there was lots of moaning and groaning and complaints about Paul McCartney not doing any Beatles songs! Ironic, isn't it? While reading all the pleas and laments over his set lists I contemplated a very special show where Paul performs his personal faves which weren't big blockbuster hits, you know, a lot of stuff from his most recent CDs of the 2000s. This might go over best in a smaller more intimate venue, such as The Olympia in Paris where he performed fairly recently. (Would also be a big kick in huge stadiums, for the most faithful and musically sophisticated of his fans especially.) I suggested, some might think it was ludicrous--in my Hard Rock Park thread in Band on the Run forum, that Macca might put on this show at Hard Rock Park. There'd be a huge uproar that he was appearing there, and people would love to hear him and see him sing anything at all. He could sing the phone book and they'd adore it! People would flock there from all over the world in a frenzied rampage to see him perform many lesser known gems as well as a few big hits. Myrtle Beach, S.C., a large resort area where Hard Rock Park (the first of its kind in the world) is located, is at least semi-famous in the U.S. like Branson resort is, and not completely unknown abroad. Paul might get a kick out of putting it on the map big time. I know he loves Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis and Carl Perkins and many other Southern rockers, Chuck Berry and Little Richard and James Brown, et.al., seems like he might fancy honoring the South in this fashion. Hard Rock Park is dedicated to the love of music and is especially for avid music lovers. Led Zeppelin is being courted to play there and might assent. I must go there and ask the CEO to ask Paul and his band to appear. The CEO of Hard Rock Park might reply that is beyond his wildest dreams, but sometimes you gotta reach for the stars (and Macca is nothing if not a Star). Have I just made a fool of myself? (again)Probably. But I had a dream. And just a dream, a fantasy, it may remain, but it's enjoyable to envision. I suppose I'm fond of this area because it's not far from my little hometown, and I've been here and lived here many times. Hard Rock Cafe founder Issac Tigrett was married to Maureen "Little Willow" Cox Starr, by the way. Hard Rock Park is an offshoot of Hard Rock Cafe.

EXACTLY !!! Some people are SO touchy. Want the right to express their opinion yet when criticized immediatley throw their toys out of the pram! Enough said. I am backing out of this now so don't wast your time & effort responding as I will no longer read this thread.
Maybe its not your intention but when you say give it a rest and imply that he was making his point just to get a rise out of people, you aren't arguing the merits or non meirts of his point but arguing that he has no business making his point in the first place. In my opinion it doesn't get any more touchy to be so bothered by a point that you say they shouldn't be making the point, period. Some of the Paul concert status quo seems to think they have some weird moral high ground on this point. If you run with their logic it strikes me really stange. For example, at least from what I read -- Rusty is the member of the band who is more likely to egg him to doing more solo stuff whereas Wix is the big Beatle guy. So I wonder what Paul says to Rusty when Rusty asks for more solo stuff like Too Many People. Rusty you jerk, you like RAM? How disloyal and how offensive I find it that you are into my solo catalogue. Those Wings years were the worst years of my life. My true fans like Beatle Paul, Revolver stuff like that. Or forget everything I've done after the Beatles -- its Hey Jude or bust. When I run into a fan on the street and they talk to me about my solo career and how they want to hear more of it in concert, I turn away in disgust. I've burnt all of my Wings club sandwich magazines the other day, etc. I want nothing to do with those fans who followed my whole career. Paul would then say I totally get those fans that are disgusted with those people who are clamoring to hear more of my solo work -- it can not get more unflattering to talk to those fans that have listened to my every album and are into it -- I feel much more at home and like those that agree with some of those snobby critics that I didn't do much worthwhile after the Beatles -- those are the people that I dig.

All you have to do is watch the youtube clip of McCartney doing "Mrs. Vanderbilt" and it proves your point. He is doing a great song from BOR and seems to be having fun playing it. The crowd in Kiev is going wild and it is not a Beatle song !!
As much as I loved hearing Mrs. Vanderbilt I don't think the positive reception in Kiev proves anything since it's his most popular song there. Apparently it's their Hey Jude, Yesterday, Let It Be so it may prove the exact opposite, i.e. that people want to hear the crowd pleasers. While I hope he keeps it in future set lists I'm not expecting the average American/European concert goer to go nuts over it.
I think it proves that he can do other Wings hits outside of his normal setlist and still get a positive reaction. I don't believe any crowd really gets excited to hear "C Moon" or "In Spite of Danger" so a song from one of his best records of all time is a nice addition to his setlist in my opinion.

One day you'll look to see that I have gone For tomorrow may rain, so I'll follow the sun Some day you'll know I was the one But tomorrow may rain, so I'll follow the sun And now the time has come and, my love, I must go And though I lose a friend In the end you will know, oh One day you'll find that I have gone But tomorrow may rain, so I'll follow the sun Paul still looks young no oldie here Take a look at this recent shot I got of Crosby, Still and Nash. Crosby is morphing into Santa. He still got great pipes though. These guys are the same age as Paul and look how much younger he looks.

I live in Cahrlotte NC and visit Myrtle Beach a couple a times a year. Hard Rock park is a neat place, Moody Blues have played there already I believe.

Susan Hickman, no I will not give it a rest, that's the problem now, too many people have given it a rest!! paul McCartney is one of the greatest entertainers in the whole world, and I want to hear as much of his music live as I possibly can. His career was and is more than just the freaking Beatles! I fully realize that he may never ever do the type show I want, but that doesn't mean that I'm just going to be a blind follower and not try and let the man know how much I and many others would love to hear more of his music on stage. If you're happy with basically the same show year after year and tour after tour, good for you, me I expect someone as brilliant as Paul McCartney to be better than that! Also, I have never ever told anyone to give it a rest when they continually say that McCartney is going to perform mostly Beatles. Even though I may disagree, I respect their opinion, so please return the favor and respect mine, because it isn't going to change! Paul McCartney seriously needs to change his setlist!!
Shut up, moron. Everyone's sick of hearing it. He's a rock performer. He'll play his most popular songs and what he wants to play. Get over it and stop causing internet drama. Is there an ignore list function on this forum? I come here to talk about Paul McCartney, not listen to people whine about his setlist day in day out!

Stop acting like a child and calling people names. People can express their opinion and if you don't like it don't read or respond to these posts.

What utter nonsense. Do you seriously think that Paul actually enjoys rehearsing and playing the same old songs over and over again, year after yaer? Of course he doesn't,he's just a crowd pleaser and gives his audience what he thinks they want to hear. If he thought he could get away with it,I bet Paul would love to play a whole concert of nothing but 50's rock'n'roll standards.

No, he doesn't. That's why he keeps touring and always voices his displeasure with his concerts. : This forum is ridiculous. @yankeefan7: No, it's not really the voicing of opinions, more of SEEING IT EVERYWHERE. Besides, I think it's more childish seeing "NO I SHAN'T TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER I WANT TO SEE THESE SONGS LIVE AND EVERYONE ELSE CAN GET STUFFED. WAAAH WAAH" over and over, don't you?

If the forum is ridiculous, don't read it and enjoy other forums. My point about being childish was you telling him to "shut up". You may feel these posts are lame and annoying but it is a "free" fan site and the posts are not "offensive" or "obscene". I have agreed with the general idea of the thread but try to express it in a mature manner. I have stated that I understand McCartney has to acknowledge his Beatle past but wish he would change things a bit more if he tours the US again. I have also said I understand playing mostly Beatle songs for concerts like Liverpool and Kiev because they are a once in a lifetime event for these people. Finally, I was thrilled to hear him perform a song like "Mrs. Vanderbilt" from one of his best records ever "BOR". I think it shows McCartney that some fans love his work after the Beatles almost as much as his song with the Beatles.

Dear all, I saw Paul 14x live (1989, 1993, 2003, 2004,2008 Kiev) and I have to point out that he has never been in such a great, great, great form!! Brillant (!) voice, flashes in his eyes, the songs have been sharp, tight & full of energy. Sorry, he is still the CEO of Rock/Pop music! He is better than ever! Steffen
-
I think Paul shouldn't do a whole new playlist. I think some old songs should stay in. If Paul notices that people really love a song, he should put that song in his playlist. If he notices people don't like a song, he can put it out. Take 'Hey Jude'. Everyone sings along with the 'nanana-part' It should absolutely stay in the playlist!

Ditto. Just reading this thread is giving me a headache with everyone bickering at each other. For me, I'm happy with what Paul plays. I think he sounded amazing in Kiev and he seemed to be really enjoying himself despite the poor weather.

Amen to that! When he started playing Blackbird the whole audience went "ahhhhhh". I have never heard anything like it before, it was as if the whole stadium had woke up... a magic feeling!! He is indeed the CEO of music!!

I'm in the group that says balance it all out, McCartney's show should be equally representative of his entire career, Beatles, Wings, and solo! As it is now, it's always Beatle heavy. Change all the songs up, pick totally new and different gems from his career, he has plenty of them. I don't expect him to do this at a show like Liverpool or Keiv, but when he starts his regular world tour, that's when the setlist needs to be changed!
I agree totally here... it is not reasonable to do a whole slew of new and "returning" songs on a very high profile gig.. like Liverpool (where there will undoubtedly be a DVD release) or Kiev... but when the regular tour kicks in..he really needs to take a good long hard look at the set... to be honest, I have that much of material from live gigs on official and unofficial DVD's... and I cant tell one gig or year from the next, as his set is almost identical each time... mainly due to his total reliance on a top heavy Beatles inclusion in recent years..... kick some of them out, add a few more solo tracks ("That Wa Me" surely should become a staple) and a trio of new Wings songs.... for goodness sake..Juniors Farm is begging to be added... I have lost count of the number of people here who are asking for it.. me included... he just needs to come here and take a read..... other artistes view their official www spaces. (Journey, are one of them) Paul should take a peek here now n then!

Charlie D.. you are showing no tolerance here... everyone is entitled to their views... we tolerate your "blinkered " view(dont agree with it though... Macca should change the set around more..its blindingly obvious!) ... so please tolerate others.. a lot of us agree with left hand man... his view is entirely representative of many people... the set list is a subject ripe for discussion!

I want everyone to notice, I'm never disrespectful, I never call anyone names, and I try to never be offensive. I will continue to state my opinion with dignity, respect, honesty, and truthfulness. Paul McCartney is a brilliant entertainer, he has excellent quality material from three distinct phases of his career, how many artist can say that? Many of you are really Beatle fans, I am a Paul McCartney fan with a deep appreciation and respect for the Beatles. When I go to a Paul McCartney concert, I want to hear all phases of Paul McCartney, not just the Beatles and for the most part for the last twenty years we have gotten the Beatle Paul. It's time for the other phases of his career to get some attention, I've never said he shouldn't perform any Beatles, but it's time now for a lot less. Sure he's going to perform the core songs, but it doesn't have to be the exact same core songs. Here's what I've always suggested, McCartney averages about 30 songs per show, he could do... 10 Beatles 10 Wings 10 Solo McCartney picks ten of the very best from each phase of his career (mostly rockers please) mixes them up anyway that he likes so the audience gets hit with surprise after surprise. If this is really his last big world wide tour, this is his chance to put together a very special setlist that truly covers and is representative of his entire fantastic career! In my heart of hearts, I don't think that's too much to ask of someone as brilliant as Paul McCartney!!
-
This whole thread started because someone was slagging off almost the entire show, and ending by saying the "lack of originality was pathetic". Pathetic!!! How can you call a Paul McCartney show pathetic!!!!???? Anyway, I don't want to get into that, it's all been said before. Now it's 28 pages of slagging each other off. We all have our opinions, I'm one of the ones that would go to his show no matter what and would be happy watching the same show over. Just getting to see him is an amazing experience. I hope this is the end of the slagging off. He is a living legend and we should be over the moon that he is still going strong, and doing gigs. He won't be touring forever, and we should appreciate every gig we go to.

I'm not either. It all just got a bit much though. You just post the same thing over and over. Don't try to make it look like I'm a bad guy. I think you just need to understand that many people will be seeing him for the first time ever... I am 16 years old. I live in Australia. He hasn't been here since I was 2 years old. My ideal setlist is the "Back In The World" setlist with Helter Skelter instead of Mother Nature's Son. I can't help that. I understand you've seen him more than once. But you just need to see it from both sides here.

Hi CharlieD, I think the concern is that if you tell people to shut up, or call them names like moron, it makes it difficult to have a meaningful conversation about anything. I'm sure that it was probably just an instinctive, gut reaction on your part, and that you didn't mean to be disrespectful, but I know that if someone on this forum told me to shut up, I would be hurt by it (thankfully that has never happened to me...thanks guys! ). I can certainly understand your point about being a young fan who has never seen Paul live. It's so true that we all bring such a wide variety of experiences to this forum. Paul has many generations of fans, and they all have different tastes, hopes, etc. In the same way that you want others to see where you're coming from, please also try to understand that some people find this discussion about setlists interesting, stimulating, etc. I know I do. In fact, aside from the bickering, this is my favorite thread on the forum right now (go figure, lol). Anyway, I'm sorry if this is sounding like some lame lecture. I don't mean it that way. It's just that I can see from your other posts on other threads that you are interested in contributing in a positive way to this forum, and I wanted you to understand why this thread might be of genuine interest to some. Welcome to the board, and all the best. Cheers, Shawn.
