Paul McCartney has officially become an oldies act.

Oldies? I don't care!!! My first and probably last show with Sir Paul. And just five minutes away from home! I would have dreamt it and it would never have happened. As a matter of fact, he admitted in the course of an interview earlier this week that he was an oldies' fan himself: stuff like Cole Porter music, Tony Bennett (who, if I'm not mistaken, sang at his last and unfortunate wedding), oldies he grew up on while his parents were listening. As I posted on another thread I heard parts of the sound check earlier, and no surprise so far... Live and Let Die which I heard clearly.
I would not expect "surprises" for this type of show. This is kind of like a "once in a lifetime" event for the people in Quebec. It makes sense that it will be a show of mostly the Beatle hits. The complaint which started this thread had more to do with McCartney doing the same type of show on a world tour when he has played certain cities not that long ago.
-
Yes it was a once-in-a-lifetime thing!!! Although he said "til next time" at the end, which suggests... But no tour gig will ever come close to what I experienced tonight. As for the oldies, we did have some. Even the video feed turned to B&W for 'I Saw Her Standing There'. The big surprise was 'Michelle'... (kidding here). For me the surprise was the pyrotechnics with Live and Let Die. Even though I had heard about them, I wasn't prepared for this. Being late to show up I didn't get to the section in front of the stage. I ended up on a quite decent spot at the back of the stage where they had set up a giant screen. But those fireworks!!! WOW. Never thought I'd be able to see them that way. I'm pretty sure we got the same effect as the ones who were in the best section of the site. I'll find out soon enough, I intend to watch the PPV later on -- to perpetuate the emotions. lyse l.

Yankeefan, Very good point you bring up. Having seen Paul twice a long time apart, I have always enjoyed the concerts. It's always great to see him. I just feel that he could, and should, incorporate more Wings and solo material into his concerts. We all know that he is talented and the shows are never a dissapointment. It's just frustrating that he seems to concentrate on 8 years out of a nearly 40 year solo career (well over 50 years if you count his first meeting with John and the Beatles). I think he should do more solo and Wings songs. He would challenge himself and the audience a little bit, by something different.

Lyselle, I am so happy for you, it is an awesome experience to see McCartney live! I totally disagree that McCartney should stop performing live, far from it! He should perform live even more, just change the freaking setlist. An interviewer in Quebec told McCartney that the fans wanted to hear Beautiful Night, McCartney said he wish he had known earlier because they would of rehearsed the song so they could do it. We have to somehow get the message to McCartney that we want him to change his setlist, it seems he's open to the idea of performing more of his post Beatles music.

People in Kiev voted for "Mrs. Vanderbilt" and now he has added song to his shows. Might be a good idea to get the message to him, maybe by sending email to the band members.

Lyselle, so glad you got to go to the concert and saw Paul live. that atmosphere, those songs, the people around you that are so happy, it's an unbeatable experience.

Hi all, It's been a couple of days since... I'm still basking in the afterglow, light-headed and in a state of mixed shock-awe. I'm sure you know what I'm trying to say. I feel pretty much blessed. Old Ms Q is too. All of this has had an effect on the city, the people that can't be measured. We've been smothered with numbers, crowd estimates from aerial photography, news headline indexes, number of Google hits, number of articles published worldwide... Ever long lasting generalized frenzy here. The whole city is suffering, whoa suffering is such a harsh word. No, let me rewind here. The whole place is savoring the sweetest, mellowest hangover it could ever hope for. Sir Paul, semi-god. The ageless musical legend. Macca, the generous and kind human got close to each and everyone of us, on an eye-to-eye level, firmly establishing this indescribable complicity with the natives and guests from all over. Even the smell of his presence lingers on in this already precious and most beautiful city landmark park in Canada (someone from Vancouver BC wrote that in an earlier post). I honestly don't think anyone here will completely ever touch their feet back on the ground, at least in the near future. In sorts, we've all become the ones John sings about in Imagine. One cannot wish better upon us than to carry on with that feeling forever. No one will ever rightly blame me for going gaga as I am now. I'm not a drooling groupie, nor a flower-child. I'm just an 49 year old who had the privilege of listening to the original soundtrack of her life along with 250 000 close friends, performed live before her very eyes and ears. I am also a dreamer. And I might try to factor the experience to some mythical eerie symbolism, voluntarily or not. Shoot me if I'm wrong. I don't care. I'm blessed. Period. This does transcend all politics, all religions, all countries. Without even trying at all.

True, Kiev did vote for "Mrs. Vandebilt", but there's no definitive proof that shows that's why Paul did the song. As has been mentioned numerous times elsewhere, that was a HUGE hit in the Ukraine, so perhaps Paul (or someone close to Paul) suggested it be done. Also true that Quebec voted for "Beautiful Night", but Paul seemingly didn't get word of that until it was too late. Everyone is assuming that there's a connection between the Ukraine fan poll and the inclusion of the song, but there may or may not be "linkage" there. It might just be a happy coincidence that Paul chose an (obvious) song for Kiev that was a (obvious) choice to top the fans' poll. Did anybody think of that?
-
In interviews McCartney himself acknowledged the Ukranian poll and said they were asked to do the song. The connection is obvious.

Queen Bee, just to share with you, I did exactly what you suggested! I skipped McCartney's last tour because it was basically just more of the same old same old.
I can beat that....I stopped attending Paul's concerts in 1993 for the same reason. I was just getting bored seeing him perform the same old songs less well than the tour before. Queen Bee got it half right though......Paul should quit touring and instead spend the time in the studio making better albums.
Kestrel, i am starting to agree with you. I didn't listen or go and see Paul but when i looked at the set list i did start wondering whether Paul should change the choice of songs that he plays. Sorry guys but that is my opinion at the moment. Maybe your right that Paul should stop touring to concentrate on being in the studio. That was the best thing that the Beatles did. Don't think Sgt Peppers would have been as good if they had carried on touring.
-
Paul's touring schedule isn't exactly as hectic as The Beatles' so I don't think it would matter. Besides, he was touring the world when the songs that ended up on Chaos & Creation and MAF were written, so I see no proof that Paul touring = bad albums.
-
Because some don't like the set list, he should stop touring. What would make more sense, is if you don't like the set list, you pass on the concert. It seems that Paul performed 3 huge concerts in the past few weeks and all of those people would disagree strongly.

Please post one of these interview links - thanks...

Eric, try going to the Macca Report site, and look thru the news section, that's where I saw it they may still have it posted. Also watch the you tube clip of him performing the song, just before they start Paul says in I guess it's Ukranian, that they were asked to perform the song. Realistically who would ask except fans.

Eh? DennyC I wasn't implying that he should stop touring because I don't like the set list. All I was trying to get across was that I'm a "bit bored" with the set list. Besides I haven't been to a Macca gig yet as he hasn't been on tour since I became a fan. Maybe Paul should give up touring. Who knows. We could agrue about this all day long but at the end of the day, it doeesn't really matter because there is nothing we can do about it. Apart from complain about the set list!
-
I don't think anyone is complaining about McCartney actually touring, the question is why the same basic songs over and over and over, year after year after year??

Pete Townsend said it best, "McCartney likes to rest on his laurels."
-
I love The Who,but Pete Towshend saying Paul is resting on his laurels is a bit rich.Apart from the last Who tour, which i went to see and loved,The Who were playing the same old songs for decades.I don't think recording wise Paul or Pete having been resting on their laurels,if Pete's quote is correct.I did read he thought Paul and Elton and the like had put out too many albums over the years.I do think he had a fair point, albums like Pipes Of Peace and Off The Ground have sullied Paul's reputation a bit.Thank god over the last 10 years Paul's albums have been a lot stronger.

Ditto. That's what I've been trying to say. Sorry if I was a bit vague earlier = i think the heat was starting to get to me. Either that or i need more caffine I can understand what you have been saying lefthandman on this thread now. I didn't to start with but I agree with you that he needs a new setlist. It is hard for Paul to pitch it right as there will be new fans at each concert. Just a thought but maybe the MPL should put a vote for the set list on this forum before each concert?? I know that there is a thread on the setlist already here somewhere but it's not really a vote.
