Paul McCartney has officially become an oldies act.

I never thought I was alone in thinking Wings were great in the 70s, because I saw the songs constantly reaching the top of the charts, I saw the sold out world record breaking concerts, I read the reviews from fans that were in most cases totally opposite of what the journalist were perpetrating! As I posted earlier, Wings fans weren't fooled by all that nonsense, whenever Wings performed anywhere, the place was jam packed, and Wings rocked the house! people forget that a whole generation of people came up listening to Wings, those fans are still around, they haven't gone anywhere!

yep,i'm still here. I'll always be a fan of Wings (or seventies) before that of the Beatles or his solo work since Wings. But thats probably because Wings represent my youth and my passion for music at that time rather than comparing the actual music from the various eras.
-
So Kestrel, just think how many others there are just like you who came up listening to Wings, a whole generation! This is just another reason that I say McCartney should change his setlist, there are tons of fans of his Wings and solo music! I keep saying it, many of the songs may be older, but his actual show doesn't have to be!

Just enjoy the music, whatever songs he chooses to play. Don't fret so much about it.....
-
Please understand, absolutely no one is fretting, just asking for a way way way overdue change!

I don't know, it's over due for you, but it seems to me, the last few concerts drew very big crowds, and they seemed very happy with the songs he played. They were places that haven't seen him. You are never going to get him to do a lot of lesser known songs at his shows, it's not going to happen unless it's a very small venue. He wants his audience to sing along and know what he's singing. That's his philosphy, he believes and has said so many times, you go see your favorite artists you want him to do the big hits. It's no fun for him, if the audience doesn't give him feedback. I know, jr's farm, etc, etc. It would be great, more Wings, I would love it. But I also love it the way they are. As long as he shows up, so will I. I go to see Paul perform.

I agree 100%. I like to hear the audience get 'jacked up' while Paul is one stage...if he played songs such as 'Little Lamb Dragonfly' (a favorite amongst serious fans but probably largely unknown to casual fans) and the majority of the audience didn't respond, I'd be disappointed. Although I have no prove behind this thought, it's my contention that the majority of the audience is there to relive their Beatle memories and don't really appreciate Paul as much as he deserves. We, on this board and others who are truly fans of Paul's music, are mostly likely in the minority at these shows. I'd be willing to bet that if Paul were to perform Penny Lane and Revolution back to back, 90% of the audience (or more) wouldn't know that he just played a 'Paul' song and a 'John' song...only that he played two Beatle songs back to back.

Thats very true unfortunately. Tens of thousands attended Paul's recent concert in Israel for example but how many of those people would have been owners of the 'Memory Almost Full' album? Not very many I suspect. And thats not just Israel but the world all over. Music fans in general, including casual macca fans, make for the majority of his live audience so its understandable that the focus is mainly on his well known songs. But to be fair to Paul, the vast majority of other acts take exactly the same attitude. I was watching Pink Floyd at the Hyde Park Live8 concert dvd last night where they played Comfortably Numb and Money and Wish You Were Here....all the well known tracks. There was never any real chance of hearing them play Young Lust, Any Colour You Like or Welcome To The Machine.

I'm not asking for lesser known songs, I want more Wings or solo hits, like Listen to what the man said or Silly love songs. I've never seen him live, so if by any chance he comes to my country next year of course I would be happy whatever he plays, but it would be great if the setlist for the show is more representative of his whole career and not covers only his beatles years cos it would be the only time I would see him.
-
I contend that while the set list of his recent tours have had a slightly higher Beatles to Wings/solo ratio, it's not nearly as lopsided as many would make it out to be. On the flip side, from tour to tour, he breaks out many new Beatle songs while there is much less variation tour to tour in regards to his Wings/solo career.
-
Titanium man and Rich N, great points. I'll say yet again, no one is asking McCartney to play unknown songs! McCartney should be performing the best of his Wings and solo material, material from #1 albums or Grammy nominated albums, the singles he's released, and his #1 worldwide hits! people know all of that material and would love to hear it. They're asking for it, Kiev asked for Mrs. Vanderbilt, another location asked for Beautiful Night, so people know the songs. Look if McCartney can step on stage and perform something like Hippy Hippy Shake (how many people knew that song) there's absolutely no way he couldn't perform any number of his #1 worldwide smash Wings hits! If he can pull out Hippy Hippy Shake, he can pull out anything! Also as I said, these one time special shows will of course be Beatle heavy, but I'm talking about his setlist when he starts his upcoming world tour, that's when he most certainly can change the setlist! I just don't buy that people wouldn't like it, all those songs and albums went #1 for a reason, they're Grammy nominated for a reason, people have the albums, singles, videos, DVDs, they know this music! I think some of you are really selling the number of people that like McCartney's music short! Once again, all those Wings fans are still around, they haven't gone anywhere!

I have had the pleasure of seeing him twice and I will agree that this is the most outlandish thread that I have seen on here yet. Calling him an oldies act made me mad... I think that it is a wonderfuk thing mixing all the eras together.. it is a rare thing these days to find great music to connect with.. Paul McCartney is one such person to keep the music of the Beatles, Wings, and solo career around so that the young people of today can enjoy really great music... I still love Paul no natter what....
-
So do I, and it's because I love his music that I want to hear even more of it, especially live!
-
Left Hand Man!!!! I cannot believe you are still beating this dead horse!!! Can't we just love & let love & feel the joy that this man gives us??? Give it a bloody rest already!! :

I have to admit, I don't like that new Fireman track. It just sounds like a bunch of loud noise to me. Where's the melody, where's the middle eight, where's the structure?

Calling him an oldies act made me mad... x I think that it is a f**k thing mixing all the eras together.. I still love Paul no natter what.... D I started this thread months ago in response to what I thought was a very standard, by the numbers concert in Liverpool. I can't believe people are still debating and upset by this thread. Get a life!
-
Um yes I've been dipping in and out of this thread, but you got to admit it does make very funny reading at times.

I gotta say what I like from Paul is mostly is older stuff. I listenned to the previews of his new album and honnestly, I have no intention of buying it whatsoever. What really got me into Macca is of course his show here but importantly, his earlier songs such as Yesterday, Let it be and other beatle songs such as Hey Jude, Imagine and such. Hold your hand, Jet,Get back and such are also great but it doesn't seem as Paul has released any such song recently. If he has however, then I'd be happy if you gave me the song's name so I could take a look and consider getting the CD.
-
I read the very first post here, and strongly disagree. Liverpool Anfield gig was fabulous, and Paul's rendition of "Eleanor Rigby" was electrifying, thrilling, stunning. Kid, you need to delve into his 1990s and 2000's CDs, there's so very much to appreciate and love (and also get into his Wings stuff). There's an endless treasure trove of real jewels to discover. And his 80s cds. Some you will love as much or even more than Beatles fare. If you really take the time to give it all a lot of ear time. It's immensely pleasurable, rewarding listening

Susy I totally agree with you, and that's why McCartney should stop playing it safe on stage and really strecth out with his setlist! There are so so many fantastic songs this man should be performing live, it blows my mind that any real McCartney fan wouldn't want to hear as much of it as they possibly could, especially live? A very wise man said, you have not because you ask not, well I'm going to continue to ask! Paul McCartney seriously needs to change his setlist!!
