XTC

I could never get into XTC's albums as a whole, but I've definitely liked some of their singles.... "I'd Like That" is pure McCartney...it could have been on his first solo album or Ram!

XTC sound exactly like XTC (sorry if that wasn't what you were expecting me to say) For some reason I never heard their first hit single "Life Begins At The Hop" but I quite clearly remember their 2nd hit single "Making Plans For Nigel" - it was so different to everything else at that moment in time. I was lucky as a punk, from 1976 onwards, to see so many great bands - the Sex Pistols, Clash, the Banshees, Billy Idol and Generation X, Polystyrene, a band called the Chilli Peppers (what happened to them?), Stranglers, two of the last Jam concerts, The Police, very early U2, Abba (yeah I know....but they always were good, just not cool) and XTC. With the genius of Andy Partridge and Colin Moulding they are the 'Great Lost Band' of music who always seemed to be out of step with everybody else (more ahead of their time than behind). From 1977's 'White Music' through to 2005's Apple Box they have produced some fantastic music and remain a cult band.....if you haven't tried them give them a go.

Andy Partridge has just put out a collection of solo demos on 4-5 CDS or a box set...great band...I was lucky enough to see them live, opened up for The Police, around 79...

What about ' the ballad of peter pumpkinhead' ? He even sings it like Paul.

My main main memory of XTC was watching an excellent tv documentary in (i think) 1980 of them recording their 'Towers Of London' single. Black Sea is the only album i have by them and of all the singles they released i think Senses Working Overtime was my favourite. Rather than the Beatles, I always saw XTC as a slightly off-kilter 10CC

I don't really know a lot about this band, but I am constantly told by my male mates at work who are around 10 years older than me, that Franz Ferdinand (a favourite band of mine) are copies of them. I off course defend Franz Ferdinand and from what I have heard cant see it.

They're great. My favorite albums are "Skylarking" and "Nonsuch," but there are good songs scattered over all their records. I don't think Andy Partridge sounds anything like Paul McCartney, though, as some others have said.

From past reviews i thought it was Colin Moulding who was suppose to sound like Paul McCartney? )

XTC is one of my all-time favorite bands, and I have a lot of friends (through the web, mainly) who are fans. One of them just dug up this article from 2005: http://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2005/10/paul-mccartney.html The relevant part: Question: One band you get compared to is XTC. ?English Tea? from your new album, sounds almost like something Andy Partridge would?ve done. Do you listen to XTC, and are you influenced by their work? Paul: Yeah, I listen to XTC and did a little bit of work with one of the guys once, but I wouldn?t see the connection. I don?t know anything of theirs that?s like ?English Tea.? The XTC fans are all stumped as to when Paul worked with anyone from the band. Anybody here have any idea, or is Paul mistaken? (Paul is definitely right that XTC has no songs like "English Tea", however!) The band is no more, but their main members were: Andy Partridge, Colin Moulding, Dave Gregory (third album and after), Terry Chambers (left in '83), and Barry Andrews (keyboards on first two albums, went on to form Shriekback). After Terry left, they had a series of studio drummers, but none of them were actually members of the band or even played live with them, since they never toured after '82.

King for A Day is just an amazing song (among their other works of course). Great band that never got the mainstream success they should have.

Yes, that's a great one too. There is a new reissue of their Nonsuch album (which had that track) which includes a bonus disc (DVD or Blu-ray). The Blu-ray has the most goodies, which include demos, instrumental mixes, the music videos, a 5.1 surround mix, and about 45 minutes of recording studio footage. The album itself has been remixed somewhat, and now all the crossfades are gone, so none of the songs blend into each other anymore. Still not sure how I feel about that, but it's interesting to hear the entire psychedelic fadeout of "That Wave", for one thing. I first got into them when Black Sea was out, and within a few years I was a major collector.
