Which Band Was the American Beatles?

The band that has come the closest to influencing a generation of bands like The Beatles did -- is Nirvana. Morso than U2, I think. And, yet, Nirvana's influence still doesn't scratch the surface of what The Beatles did.

Yeah audi I would agree with you about the influence of Nirvana. You know who else comes to mind as making as major an impact on music as the Beatles? Phil Spector. People forget or might not know, Phil came in at age 19-20 and just turned everything upside down with his own methods and produced #1 hit after hit, from about 1960-65. He played guitar and piano, would write the songs and then select the artists to play and sing on them. all those hits, 'she do run run', 'be my baby', 'to know him is to love him', 'you lost that loving feeling', 'unchained melody', 'river deep'.. regardless of who sang and played on the records, those were all Phil Spector records. he was doing more on them than the Beatles did on their own early records. Phil Spector was an amazing genius. this is good

Very true. I have this double LP on vinyl, its is nasty! What he did to Ronnie, and his kids is pretty upauling.. genius has a dark side. except with Paul! thats why I honestly think Paul is an alien

Did you mention Spector's "Wall of Sound"--the massive wall of sound that's evident on George Harrison's (some call it George's masterpiece) triple "All Things Must Pass" album. It sounds a little heavy-handed at times. Imagine "All Things Must Pass Naked." Was it Spector whom Paul Mc. thought screwed up "The Long and Winding Road" with strings, a big chorus, etc. Yes I think so? At least Spector didn't inflict on Ronnie and kids what he did on that poor Hollywood "House of Blues" hostess just a few minutes after she set foot in his house

I wouldn't think of him as approaching anything near the U.S. Fabs! That level of excellence! And Nirvana music is too depressing Just my take on it. "Teen Spirit" seem galvanizing at the time. Their most "upbeat" effort. -

As far as having a profound influence on popular culture and developing a new music genre, I would have to go with Nirvana.

Yeah that's a slight difference
but he really did sweep up the whole industry when he came out, and had a ton of hits. I think I remember reading like 50 top 40 hits and a bunch of #1s. You're gonna think I'm nuts but NWA and Eminem also moved the artistic and cultural needle. And brought rap into the mainstream consciousness. And revolutionized it. And actually, given where hip hop is in the music world/business today, it's not far fetched to put them up there with the Beatles in terms of influence. Eminen's got to be approaching some of their #1 album records, and sales records. And NWA spun off uber successful solo careers of Dr Dre, Eazy E and Ice Cube. And DJ Yella in the porn industry Influence and sales aside, no one sounds more Beatley than Nilsson. To me anyway. -

I didn't make up the term "American Beatles," I just found it of note that I came across various stories or headlines saying Steely Dan is, and then one saying Velvet Underground is the American Beatles. Made me wonder what other U.S. bands might even begin to approach that exalted designation or comparison.
None. Though Michael Jackson in the 80's was probably the closest.

NWA was not socially exceptable music when they came out but (somewhat unfortunately) have proven to be ahead of their time. So much of hip hop and rap spun off from them. I'm uber aware of rap music probably more than your average member on this forum (maybe not) but to me their influence on music seems pretty reasonably in the top 5 all time. Michael Jackson was a great call, Nirvana is a great call. NWA is sort of a uniquely underground mass influencer. They impacted music certainly, lyrical content and beats, had a large role in censorship debate, impacted fashion and clothing, and also helped advance causes dealing with race, gangs and poverty, or at least bring it (and Compton ) more into the public consciousness. -
Here?s a quick selection of a few of the battle raps the various NWA members threw at each other during their temultuous break-up! Ice Cube ? No Vasoline (badass, Cube's a rapper)
Dr Dre ? Dre Day (Snoop and the boys bring the fight to Eazy after leaving Ruthless, the Chronic breaks out Death Row Records) Eazy E ? Real Muthaphukkin G?s (Eazy had another sweet producer waiting in the wings to replace Dre; 187 Um. guy was good, and yes his name is '187 Um' lol no idea what happened to him) 2 Live Crew (Luke) ? Cowards In Compton (2 Live responding to the mention in Dre Day) and through Dre came Snoop and Eminem! NWA lineage is ridiculous. -

Nancy you need to go out and pick up Straight Outta Coompton, I've seen it out on vinyl!
I rarely listen to any of this stuff anymore, I prefer some of the more jazzy and less vulgar rap like Tribe Called Quest and Pharcyde by a mile. but I have lyrics memorized from most NWA, Dre, Eazy stuff, its hilarious. i can just listen and rap with it like a complete idiot! 
the lead singer Bradley Nowell from Sublime was known to break into rapping NWA lyrics over the reggae grooves they were laying down while playing live. that guy was awesome. -
I'm curious if there's anyone else here who might agree with me about NWA being that influential of a group?
