VINYL appreciation thread!

I just hit up more vinyl this morning, on a rainy day! picked up the Apple Release from Modern Jazz Quartet, Under The Jasmine Tree ($5) (the apple collection grows), the original Beck Mellow Gold US 1993 release (MINT!) on Bong Load records ($15), the Nirvana 7" single Sliver/Dive or SubPop ($5), and a Pharcyde 12" single of their song Trust, with 6 remixes ($3). I was talking to a guy there who is a total audiophile, and he said he uses his copy of Mellow Gold to test sound systems, say the sound on that record is so outstanding and odd and intricate, is something to behold. So I'm definitely looking forward to that He's was holding back on me though today! He cherry picks the collections he gets in (of course, as I would) and he grabbed himself an original US vinyl copy of Nirvana's Nevermind from 1991. He played it for me and it was amazing, great sound to the bass, just everything, really powerful. Such a sweet record I'd love to have. at least he sold me the Sliver/Dive single Happy vinyl hunting.

My husband is a major record collector and has been all of his life. His collections numbers well into the thousands . (Thankfully they are not all in the house) That isn't a brag...it's rather overwhelming to me. While he obviously has enough records for both of us...I still sometimes buy my own. Recently I've turned to Japanese pop artists from the 70's and 80's...particularly singers Momoe Yamaguchi and Akina Nakamori.

I live for vinyl. If an album hits my soft spot, I always buy it on vinyl. I have a thing for collecting late 60s/early 70s albums... I just have to experience them in their true warmth.

Well I just rocked the vinyl shop, and had to share the news! For $20 I picked up Layla by Derek and the Dominos (15), One of the Boys by Roger Daltrey (which has Macca's Giddy on it!!) ($4), and the ABKCO Films soundtrack of the 1969 film Cometogether (released on Apple Records, the Apple collection grows!) ($1 ) Can't wait to hear Giddy. The songs based on McCartney's unreleased tune Rode All Night. You all probably knew that. So sweet!

I'm contemplating getting the Beatles vinyl box, and just nail down the entire collection. I have everything already Beatles for Sale onward, but that means 5 really precious albums I do not own yet, and would be fairly pricey to acquire if they are going to be in good shape. I may have to pull the trigger on this one. MMG, great to hear about finds like your Pepper with inserts for $10! thats a great one. I had a very similar instance occur a while back where I got a Mint condition Nilsson the Point! for $10, and it had the original comic book inside as well! given scarcity and price and being in such great condition, thats probably my all time best find. I'm playing Derek & the Dominos alot since I got it, just flipping the 4 sides endlessly, really enjoying it. getting to know the band if you will its stellar. and those vinyl records are two of the heaviest I own of the old records. they feel like 180 gm! or close to. the records from1970. come to think of it, I got that for $11, NM condition, thats quite a find as well! I'm proud of picking up the Keith Moon rarity 'Two Sides of the Moon' for $4! thats one thats just tough to find. and so hilarious to listen to.

Nice!!! When I went to PEI 2 years ago, a record store had mint condition vinyls of The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society and Something Else By The Kinks... $40 each, but you can't find Kinks albums ANYwhere in Montreal!! No luck for me on ebay either! It was my birthday so, I bought myself a treat.

Well apparently now the Vinyl reissues have been withdrawn.

That?s interesting (and lame) about the Beatles remasters not being issued on vinyl. Must not be a big demand? a little surprising, but a lot of people with vinyl collections have the Beatles already I suppose. I probably would have picked up the early ones I don?t have? MMG, regarding the Kinks, I?m about to start listening to them.. I have 3 of their albums but haven?t really even played them, played some of Muswell Hillbillies the other day and liked it. I have Muswell, Preservation Act II, and the Great Lost Kinks album (which I am reading is actually kind of rare?). Whats your favorite Kinks album?

A bit off-topic but vinyl-related.. I just wanna know what turntables do you use? I can't afford hi-ends yet but would definitely buy one when I get rich haha. Right now, I'm settling for Crosley. I'm just starting my collection anyway.

I have an old Technics turn table that sounds fantastic. its got the nice plastic cover which I never put down. any old turn table would do I'd say. I just got back from a record store, one I never go to cause they are over priced. and they continue to be. but this time I was absolutley amazed by their selection. all the stuff I think is sweet they had. I nearly shelled out $140 to have the entire Nirvana vinyl collection; Bleach, Nevermind, Incesticide, In Utero. but then I remembered, thats not my game. I needed to hit the bargain/used area!.. where I found PinkFlyod's Dark Side of the Moon, great shape ($10), and Rod Stewart's Smiler! (which has Pauls song Mine For Me on it) ($5) the collection is getting nasty now I still might have to go back and get those Nirvana records... I'll never find them all in one place like this again. They even had Live At Redding for another $35. I asked the guy who worked there why they have no Nilsson, and he said whenever they get it in it goes within a week or two. the kids are eating it up these days! I love it. I have 15 of Harry's 19 albums (including soundtracks) on vinyl now. don't ask me why but I do

Thanks, this is always good to know. I need to get the Nirvana set, those are priceless. I have a Sub Pop 45 of Sliver/Dive which is my only Nirvana. you know how big of a dork I am right now? In my basement I have essentially now lined the walls, in a space about 1.5 feet down from the ceiling, with my vinyl. I just have a 1inch ledge that records can stand on that goes all along the walls of the room it seems so way too much, even I think it is. but really its just that I'm really enjoying walking around my place like a damn museum! checking out the absolute classics up on the wall. not sure of the time table on taking those down I guarantee my wife gets sick of them before I do.

haha i can only imagine what i'd do with my vinyls when i find a proper room for it

I forgot to mention, about two weeks ago I brought The Beatles Anthology 1 on Vinyl in Near mint condition for £20! I also did a little digging through the shops dusty 45's in the back of the shop and found a first pressing of The Beatles Please Please Me single red label for a fiver!! Bear in mind they discontinued the parlophone red label less than a month after this came out!
