That's not hard to understand in this age of hypermedia with 10 times as many teenage girls able to influence the statistics.

Yeah, but Bieber did not have the top FIVE, only the top 3! So their record for that still stands!

Will any of these tunes be remembered five years from now? And I can relate to it. I am often surprised by the often-very-low Views at YouTube for many of those golden oldies from the 60's and 70's that I grew up with. I'm talking about Million Selling singles that these days only get something like 26,000 Views.

There is a huge difference between The Beatles selling millions of copies of actual vinyl records, and Beiber selling thousands of downloads, which the Billboard sales charts now include.

Exactly! And today you don't have to sell as much to be #1! Not many artists (except Adele and a few others sell in the millions)

The Beatles set the record in 1964 for the most songs on Billboard's Hot 100 simultaneously: 14. Recently, the Canadian rapper Drake matched that total, twice, and now Justin Bieber has broken the record, with 17. http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6770428/justin-bieber-breaks-beatles-drake-record-hot-100 But it's not really apples to apples. Back in 1964, a song could only hit the Hot 100 if it was released on a physical single, which would be a 45 RPM in those days. In the digital era, as long as a song can be downloaded individually, it can hit the chart. So whenever any pop star puts a new album out, like Bieber just did, that first week's chart is flooded with tracks from the album. (No doubt, there will be 11 Adele tracks on the chart next week.) So that's how it happened. If there had been downloads in 1964, the Beatles probably would have had 30 or 40 songs in the Hot 100 at once. Remain calm, fellow fans! 😉

Oh I'm calm. It's just when a publication as respected as Billboard spouts off, I wish they would show a little perspective. Most people don't read beyond the headline, and take it as truth. But I don't see Biebermania in the streets!

There is probably a form of Biebermania somewhere in Norway. But it is not a good mania. All I know is, a few of the Norwegians would.

And about Billboard's Singles charts based on downloads of album tracks, shouldn't they just limit that selection process to the Official Singles? We can easily identify those official singles by the fact that they usually have an Official Video to go along with it/them. But of course that won't stop somebody from making a video for every album track. EDIT: Or just this. If the download buyer buys more than one or two downloads from a particular album, then it shouldn't count as a singles purchase. It should be a new classification, maybe an EP chart. And the singles chart probably should require charting for a month or more to qualify for the all time list. And if there are more tracks bought, then it should count as an album purchase.

Yes, the funny thing is that with streaming (like Spotify) they classify each of those plays toward the album's sales. Like, if people only listen to one track on an album millions of times on Spotify, that can boost the album's sales, even though no one ever listened to the rest of the album. It's a little crazy, to say the least. Not really consistent.

He's the next Beatles. Just like the Jonas Brothers. Or Ricky Martin. You just know he'll come back any time now.

Are The Raspberries coming back? I've only heard something about The Bay City Rollers. But that was just before Saturday Night Fever.
