why? because one of them died? shame they care now. :
Nope--the FB group has been up for a while now.
oh...but that *is* how it usually happens. They die & all of a sudden people care.
...Their second album More of The Monkees was the biggest selling album of 1967, number one for 18 weeks in the U.S., even outselling The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper (that year....
The Monkees actually out-sold The Beatles and The Stones COMBINED that year. Staggering.

Yep.

Yep.
I knew they were popular...I guess I just didn't realize HOW popular. Odd that they get so little mention these days in terms of great songs, etc. They really did have some great ones.

Head was on ATV last night......something about that movie I just love...

What he said above. I figured not in the long run with Sgt Pepper, but outselling the Beatles and Stones in 1967? Wow. Not bad.

It is nice to see him and The Monkees getting some props now. People tend to forget how huge they really were. Their second album More of The Monkees was the biggest selling album of 1967, number one for 18 week in the U.S., even outselling The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper (that year, not in the long run). An interesting bit of trivia is they were also the first band to use a Synthesizer as an instrument on record.
I wasn't around when they were popular, and caught them when MTV was re-airing the show. My mom, though, was a HUGE fan, and still has some merch of theirs as well as some grainy concert photos she took when she and her cousin traveled 10 hours to see one of their shows. I didn't realize that they were the first group to use a synth in a recording, but did remember that they rivaled the Beatles in popularity in the US, at least for a while.
Wallie, I had the same experiences as you with seeing the Monkees on tv in the mid 80's. Are you sure we werent' ssperated at birth, then?

I wonder what stats they are looking at. it really is unbelievable...although I am a daydream believer. Why aren't they still popular now like the Stones or the Beatles? Maybe they are & I'm just not seeing it.

stats stats stats. we can all make stats look good. no doubt the monkees were a massive commericial group but if they sold more albums than the beatles IN 1967 then its probably because they released more albums than the beatles. im pretty sure the usual american disease has kicked in here too...are we talking the US charts ?,id bet we are..the beatles are infact a british group and the bloke who this forum is all about is infact british. to say the monkees outsold the beatles is possibly missleading. i have just finished selling my daughters homemade cakes at the weekend .infact we outsold 'jane asher' in our street!
-
LOL! Outsold Jane Asher. That's how I was thinking too. Was it a single during the month of june? Stats sure can be misleading.

If you love Star Trek, playing video games, and find Family Guy incredibly amusing, I'm going to have to say "yes".

Out of curiosity, what is the "usual American disease"? I'm not sure what you mean there, lazy. Not trying to stir trouble, just honestly curious.

From my post above Lazy..." Their second album More of The Monkees was the biggest selling album of 1967, number one for 18 weeks in the U.S., even outselling The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper (that year, not in the long run). " And yes, they were huge in England too. It'd be nice if some people on this forum weren't so hostile. Just an observation. Didn't mean you of course.

i have highlighted the important piece of information that was perhaps missing and to my dearest friend 'wallybaby',no offence ment by the term 'american disease'.i was merely pointing out that 'some' americans believe that the world ends outside the US......for example the billboard US charts are one of many worldwide.

Ah, okay. Just as long as the word "some" appears before Americans, as we don't all have that particular disease.

The Monkees did indeed have a very successful 1967, they had 6 top 30 singles with "Im a Believer" reaching the top spot and a No2 & 2 No1 albums in the UK charts during the same period they had 3 No1 singles and 3 No1 albums in the US, one more hit album would be released in Jan 68 reaching No 5 in the UK & No 1 in the US, by mid 1968 The Monkees were all but finished, in-fact they were finished, the success they had was down to the tv series and for the most, history will remember them as the first manufactured band who never played any instruments on their early major recordings. During the same period The Beatles had 3No1 singles, a No2 single a No2 ep and a No1 album in the UK charts, in the states the had 3No1 singles & a No 1 album. All musical successes will forever be compared to The Beatles, Engelbert Humperdinck was in the news here all last week because he is representing the UK in the European song contest, we were continually reminded how "Release Me" kept SF/PL from reaching No1, every reporter failed to mention SF/PL actually sold more copies than "Release Me" the only reason SF/PL never reached No1 was because double A-sides were counted separately in those days. For the record, The Monkees were milked dry during their massive year at the top, after that they were thrown on the scrapheap once the viewing figures started to fall, great band no, some great songs yes. RIP Davy

In answer to your last part: Yes, I do occasionally, and mostly yes. Does that count?
