What a beautifully written and philosophical tribute from former Monkee Michael Nesmith, to fellow Monkee Davy Jones. A bit extraordinary he could come up with that, at this time, on short notice. Thanks for that. His words are hopeful, helpful and inspirational too.

Did you know that David Bowe's real name is David Jones but he changed it.

I did. I remember reading when I was younger and a big Monkees fan that he changed it so as not to be confused with Davy from the Monkees...

I was a huge Monkees fan growing up. Discovered them in the mid 70's when I was 5 years old. David was always my favorite and it is a very sad day today. I had the great pleasure to meet him several times through the years and he was always gracious, friendly, and warm with his fans. He will be missed. RIP Davy

I am so sad about Davy. I watched The Monkees on tv all the time and remember him on the Brady Bunch.

I'm so so sad right now I loved The Monkees TV show as a kid and even to this day i still love the music.. i went to see them live in Manchester in 1997 when it was the big reunion with the 4 of them (didn't go when they played last year, it was only 3 of them plus it was the same day as the FA Cup final so i didn't book just in case.. and well, we ended up in the final and i was at wembley instead) but to have seen them in 97 is such a good memory for me.. The BBC used to show the tv show in the early/mid 80s in school holidays and it was enough to make many people of my age into fans, i just think they did some wonderful music - with great writers and session players and also having the talent to also write some of their own and play too.. i mean the songs on "Head" are wonderful. I was always proud of the fact that Davy was from Manchester, as a kid especially i thought it was so cool that a monkee was from here. 66 is too young, my thoughts are with his family and friends There's many fave Davy vocal monkees songs, but if i had to pick one it'd be this "Valleri"

and while i'm here, he may not have had the lead vocal, but don't you love these 2? "as we go along"
                  "porpoise song"

                  .

I heard the news when I got in the car from running errands. Shocked and sad. I saw the Monkees when they came to my hometown in August 1966. I am so glad I saw Davy last spring when he came to the local casino. It was the last solo show he did before starting rehearsals for the Monkees tour last summer. He said we got more Monkees songs than usual because of it. After the late show, I got to meet him and get his autograph. Nice guy.

It sounds like it was an awesome show, featuring some pretty deep cuts. I think you mean August 1967 rather than 1966. That was when I saw them in Chicago (my first concert).

Ringo Starr, Davy Jones and Lulu during the recording session for ?Revolution?, 1968. Ringo Starr and The Monkees, Pizza Hut Commercial,1995. Not sure how many people are aware of this, but, when the Beatles debuted on The Ed Sullivan Show on February 9, 1964 that Davy Jones was also on the same show appearing in the musical "Oliver" and performing an act from it.

The character of Pavel Chekov (Walter Koenig) was added on Star Trek in late 1967 in response to the popularity of The Monkees' Davy Jones, and the character's hairstyle and appearance are a direct reference to this. Will Davy Jones be buried in his hometown of Manchester, England?

I know I am a little late in posting but definitely sad. Now for people in my age group (late 30's.....) we got our first does of the Monkees tv show in 1986 when MTV re ran the series. So sad to hear and from all accounts a nice guy. Also that the Beatles invited the Monkees to visit around the time of Sgt Pepper and gave such high compliments speaks to the class of the Beatles. It was also funny as I had thought not long ago that the Monkees were one of the only bands from the 1960's that had not lost any members. RIP Davy. Here's hoping you are jamming with John, George, and all the other musical luminaries up there.

I think I do mean 1967. A google search shows The Monkees were in my town August 6, 1967 and I was there.

A couple of messages from two members of the (extended) Beatles family: "Julian Lennon: "RIP Davy? You did some Great work! Condolences to The Jones Family x"" "Also responding to Jones' death was former Beatle Ringo Starr, whose band, of course, was a template for The Monkees. In a brief statement issued to ABC News Radio, the legendary drummer said, "God bless Davy. Peace & love to his family.""
