Avant Garde Paul
-
As has been sated before, Paul rarely hugest the credit he deserves in the Beatles community or otherwise for pushing the band in a more unconventional, underground, and experimental direction or for being the original "Avant Garde Beatle." So the question I'm here to ask is: what songs do you feel best show this side of Paul? I'll start things off with the closer to his homemade debut album: Kreen-Akrore

"Avant Garde a clue." ...hey, someone was gonna use that...

I am the Walrus
-
The tape loops on Tomorrow Never Knows.
-
"Mull of Kintyre". How many rockers ever did a Scottish waltz?
-
Standing Stone Of all his classical works, I think it is his most disonant and modern classical. This is not pop art, it's a tone poem.

FourFiveSeconds Not sure if avant garde is always the right word but McCartney's never been 'obvious' or bound by thoughts of what works and what doesn't. He is a curious/playful music and hitmaker, not a commercial businesman. I think his albums are good examples of how experiments can work hand in hand with "catchy" without ceasing to be popular music. "FourFiveSeconds" is not an avante-garde piece of music, but for someone like McCartney to surprisingly do this collaboration is actually a successful experiment. So, I chose this song for about the same reason as "Mull of Kintyre".

Avant garde? Hard to go past Hiroshima Sky Is Always Blue.

Strawberries Oceans Ships Forest, Rushes, electric Arguments ~ the Fireman They're still so avante guard

McCartney aren't Phillip Glass or John Cage but he probably listened to them and let himself be influenced even if it isn't obvious, but it's there and if you took it out there would be something missing. I reckon he is a pop-art artist but the musical results are mostly labeled within pop and not art. To include the poem "The Broadcast" on Back on the Egg might be an avant-garde decision on a pop, rock album.

Thrillington To record an orchestra version of "Ram" and release it under the pseudonym Percy "Thrills" Thrillington must be something close to avant garde.
-
Morse Moose and the Grey Goose The closing track on "London Town". With all the strange noise going on I think it borders on the avant garde.

Love this one especially!

Anyone wants "Avant Garde"? Listen to the Beatles. Again and again. That'll give you the drum. They redefined music... Experimentation and innovation.... It don't get better!... I love Paul, but none of his recent attempts come close to "avant garde".... I think he does himself a disservice at times in this field. Tries too hard to be "different". And puts out some ordinary songs.. Should concentrate on his strength.... absolute mastery of melody. He is a genius. Spends too much time trying to be "Avant Something". Stuff that. Get back to plying melody. I don't give a shite if it is three simple chords. I'll take that over some of the very recent lacklustre offerings in the name of keeping up with the Joneses.

I tried to like that song. Even bought the 12 inch vinyl at the time. But when it is all said and done.... it's ordinary.

Liverpool Sound Collage Music to complement an artwork exhibition by Peter Blake. I found no reason to single out a song here since the album is what it is. Again perhaps more of a side project than avant garde but it is experimental and more like The Fireman than a pop, rock album.

Check My Machine Again, I'm not sure if I'd call it avant garde, but I'd say it's done with an avant garde creativity. I guess one can say that about "McCartney II". Huh?

Didn't know this...wish I could see the art for it now!
