I may miss out on the DVD, but that's okay. Saves me about $80!
DVD is OK. It's about the MUSIC! Ha ha!! I drive an hour each way to work, so my CDs of this collection will be getting a real work out this week.
I'm going to check TV listings and see if it gets shown on PBS or Palladia or something. The craziest thing about the deluxe box is, if I had bought it, it would have been the largest boxed set I own. That just seems wrong!

Most of the songs are good because they follow the line of the original track. No More Lonely Nights is the different one and I appreciate the new concept that Airborne gave to the song. I like Helen Wheels, Helter Skelter, Jet, and specially Birthday (love the alternative way of the bass line) The worst song is, definitely, Let'Em In... what kind of crap is that? Dr. John, you suck.

I agree with your assessment. I am enjoying the whole thing. But Let 'Em In, I really wish the melody Paul wrote would have been respected. It may as well be a rap of the song! I would have appreciated a TOTAL reworking of the song, as opposed to a traditional backing track and the vocal going every where except it's supposed to. William Shatner would have ROCKED a "reading" of the song!!!

I didn't expect to like Daltrey's "Skelter" as much as I did. He brought it.

I only read the 2nd one...and that was quite enough.

This guy doesn't like Cheap Trick, that proves he is an a$$.

Yes, he's over the top, for sure. The swipe at James McCartney was completely unnecessary. Just listened to it all today, including the bonus tracks from all different versions. There is kind of a sameness to a lot of the tracks that use Paul's band, making singers like Steve Miller and Perry Farrell and Dion seem kind of irrelevant. Sad to admit that Billy Joel is rather horrible, and "Things We Said Today" was not a great choice for Dylan (they should have picked something darker for him), although the musical backing on that one is good. The Airborne Toxic Event does a superb job with "No More Lonely Nights"?probably the highlight of the whole collection. I give kudos to singular interpretations by Peter, Bjorn and John ("Put It There"), Toots Hibbert ("Come And Get It"), Jeff Lynne ("Junk"?though he's auto-tuned to death), and Willie Nelson ("Yesterday"). Brian Wilson's "Wanderlust" is nice, too. Great vocals from Paul Stanley, Paul Rodgers, and Roger Daltrey, and Corinne Bailey Rae sounds nice. Def Leppard did an outstanding "Helen Wheels" and Heart's "Letting Go" is much better than their "Band On The Run" (Who is that young guy singing?, I thought on that one before looking at the artist!). Alice Cooper does a pretty good job, too, but oh my goodness, Barry Gibb is awful. I thought Smokey Robinson and Cat Stevens and Jamie Cullum did okay. Allen Toussaint and Dr. John would have been much better served by using actual New Orleans bands. Allen does better, especially flexing out with some nice piano playing and singing, but Dr. John sounds completely lost with Rusty, Brian, and company. Very cool to hear Wanda Jackson do "Run Devil Run," since Paul covered her hit "Party" on the RDR album. Not having seen the DVD, is Paul in it? Does his band dominate, or is it just a lot of fawning over celebrities? I'm sure it's fascinating to see, but probably not essential for me to see.

Yeah, he's pretty rough, but I think he is actually saying Paul deserves better.

The DVD has glimpses of the band recording, but no interviews with them. The producer talks a lot, and some of the artists, but not near all of them.

How does he deserve better? If younger artists did a tribute, I guarantee there would be just as many complaints. You can't please everyone.

An all-star tribute concert is what needs to happen. Heck -- Dylan is getting ready for a SECOND one -- and Paul McCartney hasn't even had ONE yet. Oy.

The review is obviously intentionally over-the-top, but I had to laugh after reading this: "And Cat Stevens should be wanting another name change after what he does to The Long And Winding Road, in some sort of musical witness-protection scheme, though he's not the witness only the perpetrator of the crime."

Barry Gibb Did A Great Job On When I'm Sixty Four!

Anyone notice in the credits that there's kind of a "shadow" band beyond Paul's regular band? Several players who show up on many of the tracks, either in addition to, or replacing, Paul's guys. Doug Petty: Keyboards Tal Bergmann: Drums Paul Pesco: Guitar / Bass Dan Petty: Guitar / Bass And check this out, on "Live And Let Die": Additional Guitar by... Henry McCullough!

I am listening to this double set of CDs for the third time, and I am still enjoying them. Do I prefer certain renditions to other? Well, yes, because I have specific tastes. But I can appreciate all of them!
-
I am delighted with the album, for it keeps Paul in the public consciousness. There are some great tributes - Kiss and Corrine, in particular. And some benign contributions. But I won't be buying it. I'd rather thwack on one of the original albums - listening to it on the internet was great, but just made me want to slip on an original LP/CD rather than buy this tribute. Hope it goes crazy on the charts, but.

That's cool. I bought two of them, one for my brother. Frankly, I don't listen to the originals anymore. I've heard them a million times. Nothing new there for me.

Same for me.
