Yes...since yesterday! Doesn't Heart sound good on Letting Go?

I really like this album overall. According to the producer he has quite a few tracks already recorded that they simply ran out of time to work out scheduling conflicts with artists to add vocals so if it does well he said he would be easy to do a volume 2 and that it wouldn't be b-list artists, that alot of people who wanted to record simply couldn't fit it in the schedule. Also reportedly Macca band members played on 21 tracks. (not all played on all 21). I noticed that even on tracks they are on they are often playing a different interpratation than McCartney uses, often emphasizing different lines. RamblinRed

Here's my track by track thoughts - note I tend to give more props to those who re-interpret a song without destroying its melodic base. Maybe I'm Amazed - Billy Joel - I'm a big Joel fan but he doesn't have the chops for this so he uses his 'growler' voice, which works ok given the urgency of the song. Good arrangement. B- Things We Said Today - Bob Dylan - the arrangement is good, but I can't stand Bob's voice (one of the 2 worst vocals on the album) so a big knock for that. C+ Band on the Run - Heart - Solid, rocking sort of paint by numbers rendition. B Junior's Farm - Steve Miller - This almost sounds like the brother of The Joker. There is some great guitar work in this arrangement. B The Long and Winding Road - Cat Stevens - uses a little different vocal style. Not bad B- My Love - Harry Connick Jr - Just can't get into this. Last song recorded for the album. C- Wanderlust - Brian Wilson - Wilson was the first artist to agree to participate. He does a beautiful job taking this little known classic and exploring its melody and harmonies. A Bluebird - Corinne Bailey Rae - This is simply exquisite. Great job of backing her by Macca's band. A+ Yesterday - Willie Nelson - Very nice version. Sparse with just guitar and then a little accordian/harmonica. A Junk - Jeff Lynne - not a Beatlesesque as you would expect. Sold. B When I'm 64 - Barry Gibb - Doesn't really work for me - C+ Every Night - Jamie Cullum. Really a pretty nice cover. A few nice changes. B Venus and Mars/Rock Show - Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley - This is much better than I expected. Love that they did the whole song including the outro. You can tell they are having a blast. Aniother one where Macca's band really shines. A Let Me Roll It - Paul Rodgers - This is an excellent rendition. Like the exapanded version of Macca's typical live solo. Paul's voice fits this one well. A- Helter Skelter - Roger Daltrey - Roger just tears into this backed by Macca's band. Guitar arrangement differs a little from how Macca performs live. Just excellent. A Helen Wheels - Def Leppard - These guys have fun with this song and turn in a rollicking version. A- Hello Goodbye - The Cure F/James McCartney - This didn't work for me the first time i heard it and still doesn't. C Part 2 coming shortly RamblinRed

Live and Let Die - Billy Joel. Better vocal - bonus points for the whistling, different arrangement. Solid. B Let It Be - Chrissie Hynde - Not sure this fits her voice well but she gives it her all. B Jet - Robin Zander and Rick Neilsen of Cheap Trick - Excellent rocking cover. B+ Hi Hi Hi - Joe Elliott - this time Joe works with Macca's band on an arrangement slightly different than the live version Macca does. Fun to listen to. B+ Letting Go -Heart - This is fantastic. Very strong cover. They mentioned they really wanted to do this one because they perform it in their shows and it shows. A Hey Jude - Steve Miller - Not the greatest fit, but not bad. B- Listen to What The Man Said - Owl City - This is a very nice modern treatment. Really liked it alot. A Got To Get You Into My Life - Perry Farrell. Nice cover by the NIN frontman. B+ Drive My Car - Dion - this one surprised me. Alot of fun, well done arrangement. A Lady Madonna - Allen Toussaint - this is a match made in heaven. New Orleans Boogie Woogie. Great piano, great vocal. A+ Let Em In - Dr. John. Great Arrangement, horrible vocal (rivals Dylan for worst on the album). C+ So Bad - Smokey Robinson. Smokey just kills this song vocally and it fits his style so well. A+ No More Lonely Nights - The Airborne Toxic Event. This is the most re-imagined song on the album and it works beautifully. acoustic guitar and small string section with a lower vocal. Macca could do an excellent version of this live - would fit his current voice. A+ Eleanor Rigby - Alice Cooper - surprisingly straight cover. B Come and Get It - Toots Hibbert w/Sly and Robbie. Nice rework into an island interpretation. B+ On the Way - BB King. Macca reportedly wrote this song after seeing BB on TV. Hearing Lucille on a Macca song is awesome. A+ Birthday - Sammy Hagar - Sammy really tears this one up with Macca's band. Great arrangement, a little different from Macca's live version. Good song to end on. A This is probably the best compilation i've ever heard. No complete stinkers (which is saying alot for 34 tracks) and some absolute standouts. I hope this does well so the producer does a part 2. RamblinRed, I like your reviews! Good job! I agree for the most part, though I am more forgiving of the gravelly voices of some. I think they give some, how shall I say, maturity to some of Paul's tunes. Nice job!!

Glad you like Owl City's. I attended one of his shows a couple of years ago with my young niece, and enjoyed it thoroughly. He must be a fan; I know he did a Beatles song, but I don't recall which one just now. My niece is a Beatles fan, also, and has gone to a few Paul and Ringo shows with me, so she's thrilled about Owl City being on this album.

First time listening to the stream...Brian Wilson's "Wanderlust" is great! Just to have that song back as something fresh while channeling the original...too awesome!
-
Great performances by...Heart, Paul Rogers (love him), Roger Daltry, Airborn Toxic & my fav...Corinne Bailey Rae.
-
Hearing "Helen Wheels" like this makes me really wish Paul would bring that into the setlist with his band. Would make an awesome encore song. Def Leppard did a pretty good job in it!

This is really expensive. Is it worth the cost $82 for shipping.. UK residents gets it on next day delivery, while the rest of the world, who knows? I've heard some of the covers, some were great while others were crap.... Do you think this tribute box set is worth the $282 price tag?

My favorite cut is The Airborne Toxic Event - No More Lonely Nights. Beautiful.
Wish I could hear this in it's entirety...

$282 would be for the deluxe box with the colored vinyl LPs and everything, I'm assuming. I caught the Amazon Canada sale a few months ago that was about half that price. I still find it horribly expensive for a tribute album, but for now, my order still stands.

I bought the CDs only for about $22.

Harley, you can order the 2CD/1DVD set with 36 tracks from Amazon for $22. If you don't care about the DVD the 2CD set is even cheaper. Note that every big box store gets 2 different bonus tracks (Best Buy, Target, Amazon). So look for the one with the 2 bonus tracks that most strike your fancy. RamblinRed

After listening again (since i'm recovering from appendicitis I have some time), I think I graded a couple too low. I was a little tough on Billy. His take on Maybe i'm Amazed isn't bad. I'd say a B. I'm also really liking Jamie Cullum's Every Night. I like how he changed it into a brisk piano driven tune. B+. RamblinRed
