On March 11, 1997 (21 years ago today) Paul became Sir Paul after being knighted by Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace. His daughters and son attended the event, but sadly wife Linda was unable to be there due to failing health. She died a year and 1 month later. https://peopledotcom.files.wordpress.com/2016/08/paul-mccartney-660-10.jpg
Linda did not attend, not because of her health. They were only allowed 4 tickets and she wanted their 4 children to be there, so she stayed home. That same month Stella was appointed creative director of Chloe and she was well enough to attend a show in Paris with Paul.
Thanks for clarifying that, Nancy! I read in several books and online articles that she decided not to go because of her health, but what you wrote makes better sense... she'd want her children to be there. If she went, and they only had 4 tickets, one of her children wouldn't have been able to attend, and it would have been difficult to choose.
I got my info from an interview Paul gave later.
In this article it says the kids weren't there: http://www.cnn.com/SHOWBIZ/9703/11/mccartney/ Are there any pics of the kids with him there?

HA! Another version...3 of the 4 kids in this one. "McCartney's wife, Linda, who was fighting breast cancer, did not accompany him, but three of their four children were at the palace. "I would have loved the whole family to be here, but when we heard there were only three tickets, we had to draw straws," McCartney said. Linda McCartney would succumb to cancer 13 months later on April 17, 1998." http://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/paul-mccartney-knighted

Ok, thanks! He would have the correct information and know better than anyone!

Yikes, that would have made the choice on who was going even more difficult! Edited to add: Wonder if Paul was the fourth ticket... that he had to have a ticket to his own investiture ceremony... Maybe that could be the reason why there were 4 tickets, but only 3 could go to guests accompanying him... Maybe even though he was one of the honored persons, no one could be admitted unless they had a ticket in their hand... could be a protocol or security thing...

Haha...not actually. He has a habit of misremembering. What about the story for Jet? Also I think they just make up things that sound good for the press.

I understand what you're saying, but just edited my previous comment above... I think he was right when he said both 3 and 4 tickets, lol... I think he was supposed to carry his own ticket to the ceremony... and the other 3 were supposed to go to whatever family or close frends wanted to go... So it would make sense there were 4 tickets but since he had to carry one there were only 3 available for the rest of the family.... Just a guess on my part

Sorry, but there's NO WAY that Linda would have missed this if she had been able to attend! Of course she was too sick. Yes, she attended Stella's show shortly after and she did not look good Also, the fashion show would have been a lot shorter in duration than the investiture. I'm sure Linda (and Paul) were very sad that she had to miss him becoming her beautiful Knight.

Paul definitely said there were not enough tickets for the entire family to go. Now maybe since she was sick she decided to let the kids go.

The OP is right. Linda did not go because she was too ill. Of course Paul did not say that at the time, as he acknowledged later they lied constantly in public to maintain Linda's privacy. From a 1999 interview with Rebecca Hardy for the Daily Mail:
When Sir Paul McCartney received his knighthood in March 1997 his wife Linda ordered some stationery to be made up with his new title. She also bought a silver pocket watch and engraved it in her own hand: 'To Paul -- my knight in shining armour -- Linda.' Paul has never used the notepaper; he wears the watch every day. Linda was desperately proud of the honour bestowed upon her husband, but she was unable to attend the ceremony at Buckingham Palace. Her breast cancer had been diagnosed some 18 months earlier and Linda was too ill to go that day. Three of her children Mary, Stella and James took her place. Little more than a year later she was dead. 'It was hard for her not being able to be there,' says Paul. Taking out the watch he removes it from the red silk case he has made to protect the precious metal from scratching. Linda's moving inscription includes two hearts and kisses. 'The knighthood was important to her, more for my sake than hers,' he says.

The pocket watch she gave him was such a perfect gift. From the very beginning he was always her Knight in Shining Armour!

Didn't want to forget to add that Paul and Linda were married 48 years ago today, March 12, 1969.

So when you get knighted, you only get 4 tickets? That's pretty cheap of her majesty.

^ What the heck chord is he playing there? I've been trying to figure it out. E flat m?
It doesn't look like anything. Maybe he's transitioning between chords. It's definitely not Ebm.

I concede! Had never heard/read any of that before. Probably because I live in the U.S. and had no access to the Daily Mail. Heck, didn't even have a (desktop of course) computer until 1997.

This is a really nice recent photo of Paul... wonder if it was taken for Rolling Stone, or another magazine?
-
^ How recent are you talking? It looks more like circa 2009 as his hair is shorter than it is now. (Plus he looks younger)

He should always pose in front of a wall that has the date all over it! http://pmcvariety.files.wordpress.com/2014/05/paul-mccartney-hospitalized.jpg?w=670&h=377&crop=1[/img]
