.... we don't want actresses--- in vids.. don't care for the My Valentine actor sign language... thingy......--- the song is much more enjoyable on the Kisses sessions~ we want Paul and the band --- perhaps,... some cool animation--- like, with the Linda Free Range-- vid..

It's "Searching for a rhyme", who the hell hears "Searching for the light"? That's such a trite lyric. It's definitely "Rhyme".
I agree, plus it's "one" lucky day you came along.
OK you guys repost-- the lyrics... than..

Dunno, you have Mumford and Sons making it big with their anthem 'I belong to you, you belong to me' song doing the rounds, soundalike Wings if ever there was, lo-fi sound, then you have Macca doing this kind of thing. And why release a track with a summery vibe just two days before the end of summer?
That's actually The Lumineers, not Mumford & Sons
-
Oh was it? Okay, always thought it was Mumford & co. ops: I stand corrected, as Vampire Weekend put it.

Michelley:
It's a lovely song, well sung, and poignant. Q Magazine has featured the song in its 5 Songs to Hear this week:
This first track has Mark Ronson on production duties, which sees it breeze along with sparkling harmonies and playful piano lines that recall the predominantly McCartney-penned Penny Lane.
It is too bad the video looks so conventional. Just people standing there singing is not "New." I'd rather see animation or something artsy.
I don't know what it is with his videos. Maybe it's because he knows that his audience is international and all ages, so mustn't confuse or upset anyone with creativity!

Still, it did occur to me that Paul may have picked this song because it has a jaunty vibe like "Ho Hey" or Of Monsters And Men's "Little Talks"... though ultimately it is jaunty in a whole different way.

"All form, no substance" was how Lennon, at his most Aunt Mimi-ish, dismissed McCartney's output in 1980. There's been plenty of evidence before and since to contradict that view - but this song doesn't. The melody owes something to George Harrison's jaunty, witless _All Those Years Ag_o, while the 'All my life...' part is similar to Macca's own Blackbird. It also does that thing we've had a bit of recently, where the tune can't quite find a place to land; it sort of flies over the airstrip a few times before plopping down. Which wouldn't matter so much, but it's the vocals. Again, they're strained and you just can't have a summery vibe pop song with that treatment. I find it annoying, as though Macca is suggesting this lends a certain vulnerability and poignancy to it all. I guess Fred Astaire redid his classics in later life, The Golden Age of Astaire in particular must have been in his 70s, he was just busking it because his voice wasn't really up to it. For all that, I only just listened to Valentine recently, as I thought this would be another wobbly croon, and Macca nails it. Okay, helps it's in a lower register but I just can't fault the melody or delivery, it's a classic. Helps you have lovely menshka Natalie Portman emoting it of course. Perhaps for New they can have Scarlet Johansson removing an article of clothing for each line Macca sings... Otherwise, just now sure about the wisdom of having Mark Ronson, a bit of a showy producer likely to overshadow Macca's weak vocals. It all sounds a bit synthetic, but then again, the wonderful clank clank guitar work of Getting Better you can't get, cos songs don't do texture today, they do sound effects and so on instead. Okay if you're Amy, you have the power to rise above all that. Still, the tune goes around my head like a bad thought you want to wipe out with neuro linguistic programming. Really, Katy Perry's Roar is the big new pop song of the moment imo.
Inspector Sands, IMHO, New (the song) lands just fine and l like his vocals. Not saying it is one of Paul's best songs (he probably has 100 very good to great songs and New is probably a mid-tier song for Paul) but "New" is a good feeling, optimistic and summerish Pop song that many people will enjoy. Admittedly, it is on the light side but I'm hoping that there are several better, deeper songs on the Album. Paul's writing covers many genres and the light Pop is just one of them. While it is nice to hear a happy, Beatle sounding new Pop song by Paul, I'm really excited for the whole album. That will be my ultimate judge. Don't know where you live but September is still a warm, summery type of month in almost all the US and the populated portions of Canada. There is still plenty of time for "New" to give that summer-like vibe in America. Finally, it's pretty tiresome for people to continue to quote John as though he is the final say in Paul's songwriting career. Macca has been writing songs for over 30 years since John's horrible assassination. Who's to say that John wouldn't be very complementary of Paul's "total" musical career if he could speak today. Sir Paul has never stopped churning out the music and performing for over 50 years now. Along the way, he continues to give his fans great music with tremendous diversity. People aren't going to love every song but you have to admire the work ethic and how prolific he has been. I also admire that he never does a full show without his tributes to John, George and Linda. He never forgets his roots. PS Glad you like My Valentine. I liked it too.

Quite true, we have no idea what John would say today. He was certainly softening up in his opinions, not to mention his own musical style and subject matter, in 1980. "Where there's life, there's hope!"

In Star Trek there is a chapter where 2 genius meet and one says "Your talent will always be your biggest problem" or so... The problem for Paul is that no matter how good the new thing he does, it can be compared yet to a better one he once did. Like "New" is better than Your Mother Should Know but not better than Penny Lane. And if it was better than Penny Lane, it will probably be not better than Hey Jude... So it's about to compare him to the others... and I don't mean to anyone out there that write music, but to the best composers ever. To me, New sounds like Mozart, Wolphie could have written that (except for the bridge). And it would have been a movement in a piano sonata or so. And not his best thing ever, but kind of in the top 10 of his best music pieces ever. "Top Ten Best Mozart Pieces" level is not bad... yet it could be even better... but...

Mmmm, now that would be the PERFECT video.
I vote for Miley Cyrus to star in Paul's new video. Need to raise the smut factor for the new Millennials!

"New" for violin quartet. I like it! -

He says it's a simple love song but I am inclined to believe the possibility it is about John. Just for the fact of that line 'searching for a rhyme' which makes me think of the oft told story of them writing I Saw Her Standing There with 'She was just 17, never been a beauty queen' and John just going 'Really?'
The more I listen to it, the more I think it was about the first meeting with John at Woolton. All my life I never knew what I could be what I could do Then we were new His whole life was ahead of him then. He didn't know what the future would hold. That and the line about "searching for a rhyme," also goes to their songwriting partnership. There's no talk about "this love of mine," or love at all, which I would expect if it were about Nancy.
OR, he's suggesting that his meeting and marriage with Nancy has been the most eye opening experience of all his life, and now they are new and the he feels like the sky is the limit. Again, I feel like we are sort of biased and expect Beatles references, but I really think this guy is writing silly love songs like he always has and always will
Marriage to his 3rd wife is his "most eye opening experience of all his life?" Not becoming world famous with the Beatles, not the birth of any of his kids, none of that? I don't think Nancy would even naively buy that line if he told her that No, I'm not expecting Beatle references and I can't remember many that he has overtly written since "Here Today." About 2/3 of his concert is Beatles songs. Maybe, just maybe, he's not done talking about his time as one of the Fabs.

If there is anything we have learned from Paul is that you can renew yourself and your life at any point, so why can't he possibly have any new revelations in his new relationship? Not to mention the fact that everything he writes doesn't have to be taken so literally. He could have just been searching for a rhyme or something that made sense that fit into the song. As with many of Paul's songs, they could be about him, me, you or anyone. Now when he tells me he wrote My Valentine for Nancy, I believe him, but I'd say the vast majority of his songs are words put together to move the tune along.
-
Paul has said in interviews that "New" is about Nancy, but I don't think he would object to the interpretation about John, since it fits so well. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-23877060

In a BBC radio interview last Friday, he did say that it is a love song he was asked what the song is about and he answered it's alove song Don't look at me I don't have the answers I don't know what's happening I don't know why it's happening But it's good...I love you not the greatest explanation but it's the one we have
-
hum you could say the same for the songs opening lines -- for Linda--- as she was his first wife--- and they were young and in love.. makes more sense-- imo...
-
Although you could be right Harley, I believe it is about Nancy..let's face it, everytime you are in Love it always feels new at the start and you can try to explain why it works until your face turns blue but noone has ever really been able to explain what not only attracts two people together but what keeps them together. It's different with everyone. I would say it's more about Nancy since the releationship is not all that old and it is the current feeling of new love in his life. But the great thing about Paul's songs is that they usually mean different things to different people so in actuality...there is no wrong answer!!!
