New in the Charts Thread

Paul has promoted NEW. Timing, however, has been strange. 1) Sheryl Crow is doing tons of live appearances on national TV shows, but her CD is AVAILABLE!! Paul did some live TV, but BEFORE his new CD was released. WTF????? 2) Paul should have released NEW last Spring, when he was touring in Brazil, then the USA and then Japan. Imagine if ALL those concerts had four NEW songs in the set. Now, there are NO SHOWS announced, while NEW is out and waiting to be promoted. 3) The festival appearances in the USA in 2013 were cool, but obviously did nothing to get younger fans to buy NEW. May as well have just done regular shows for Paul fans in Nashville, San Francisco and Las Vegas.
I am going to plead ignorance but maybe the CD was not ready in the spring.

I have no idea either. But if not, why not wait to do all those shows until the CD was ready? My point is, usually an artist releases a CD then does a bunch of shows to promote it. Paul did a bunch of shows under the tour name OUT THERE (part of a title of one of the NEW songs) and then released NEW, and now it is quiet as a tomb as far as concert dates. Also, I recall there being some noise about the CD being released in late 2012 or early 2013, if my memory serves.

Yep, you are correct. It was supposed to be released in the spring but he didn't like some of the vocals & redid some...or so I heard.

That could be it. McCartney can do whatever he wants, but even he has to follow a tour schedule when concert dates are booked and contracted, tour material printed, and an entourage on the road. Could be NEW was supposed to be released in early 2013 with a full on tour to promote it. Instead, a confusing tour name change and no CD had me scratching my head.

I'm curious, now that you've brought it up, about the sales of Driving Rain? He did the tour after the album came out, and although that album came out a decade ago and in a different landscape when it came to music sales, I'd be curious to see how the sales numbers to see what kind of affect the tour might have had on album sales.

S0 many things don't make sense, it gives rise to, two thoughts. Based on other things I have read. One his redoing the vocals, possibly a last minute decision, and threw off the orignal better planned promo campaign, and they were scrambling with the new release date. Second, the Beatles 50th Anniversary in Feb next year, a good marketing window, and commitments in place from both the Grammys and the CBS Beatles special the following night. Thats 20 million worth of free promotion, an hour long or 90 minute CBS special, and a 15 minute segment broadcast live on the Grammy's the night before, the BBC 2 and Capitol albums to whet the appetite, Sure Apple/Universal will release Beatles remixes and other things down the road, but a tentative plan was in place at least 4-5 years ago, to do, Remasters, Itunes downloads, enhanced re-release of the movies, and Now and then and remaining archival tracks. ..... All that has been done except Now and then/archival releases and Let It Be the film, ML Hogg Let it be director told us Let it be has been fixed up for rerelease, He also says that could be a year or two. I think some kind of big archival release, designed to sell at least several million copies is in the offing, which will include the last new Beatles single in history, featuring all four Beatles... I also wonder, if McCartney and Jeff Lynne took that unfinished Harrison recording Olivia Harrison spoke about and included that, and maybe Carnival of Light and some other choice sixties takes, combine all that with the music videos or a new compilation album... this could explain a pause in McCartney's solo campaign, maybe theoretically We will know pretty soon I hope to God its more than BBC 2 and the Capitol albums, Why have second shelf releases when the gold is still in the cupboard, nothing can surpass the last new Beatlles album in history and no time could be better than the 50th anniversary, I'm so surprised there are so few leaks on this, non disclosure agreements not withstanding, this is big.. and would explain a lot

Your point about the upcoming year of 50th anniversaries and the attention that will bring is very valid, and I hope that Paul and his people have the good sense to capitalize on this! Maybe you should offer to head up his promotional team.

Eric Clapton sold about 30.000 in his first week, Avril Lavigne is in her third week and sold less than NEW. The Beatles BBC it´s selling about the same. Why this terror? The guy sold about 60.000 only in Japan. Just wait four his tours and the album will come back with more selling. Celine Dion is selling less, Cher is selling less, Avril is selling less, Clapton is selling less...C´mon, give him a break. When he comes back touring the album will show up again.
-
And on december 5th the Palladium TV will show a special called Something NEW, about the making of the album. Maybe it will help

That would be great! A documentary about making NEW. That could give the CD more momentum.

Plus it being chosen as one of the best albums of the year by both Rolling Stone and Mojo magazines won't exactly hurt.

Yeah Rolling Stone named NEW the 4th best album of 2013, high praise indeed. What is this Palladium tv special on the making of New? Is this broadcast in the UK, or USA or both? or elsewhere. Many things will bump sales and create more sales for NEW< the big upcoming Beatles releases and specials, the eventual release on Vinyl, the presumed European, UK and USA tour dates next year, the making of documentary, perhaps an additional video for Alligator, or some other song from the album. McCartney has the advantage of being able to pour in another hundred grand or two hundred grand into promotion, anytime he wants, he unlike most artists has very deep pockets. He also gets an enormous amount of free press coverage most artists don't get. There have been some massive screw ups on the NEW promotion, but the upcoming tours, Beatles releases, documentary, vinyl, and other things, will all help increase those sales numbers. As was pointed out, he has done very well already, he is just judged by a higher standard than other people. Voted 4th best album of the year, by biggest rock magazine on the planet, tv special with a making of documentary, upcoming tour, another round of talk shows and interviews, he opened at number 3 in the biggest market in the world. how bad can he be doing? He's closing in on a half million sales right now, within 2-3 weeks, or less, hardly scavenging from the bottom of the pack. I bet my eye teeth, he'll break a million units worldwide within 12 months. Still his people made some obvious blunders,,, which have already discussed quite a bit. Heck He'll pick up some sales just as Christmas presents for people, how many twenty something kids will buy a copy for there fifty something parents for the holidays, he'll probably pick up an extra forty thousand sales on that alone!
-
I don´t know about a million but very close. If he goes out on tour he will sell more than a million. He is the artist, probaly, with more fans in the world. But hey, people just have to see and listen to the album and think: ok, this one I will buy and not download. And that feeling people get on shows, when they goes very very crazy

OK - I give up ! NEW - apart from being a great album - is a true megaseller. Think how one of the greatest songwriters in history will be thrilled that his new album is slowly, hopefully crawling to gold certification in the US and will, one day probably, reach 1 million copies worldwide ! Now isn`t that a dream come true for the man who used to just put out an album almost every year in the 70s, selling over a million in the US, and several million worldwide, chart - topping hit singles galore. I´m sure he can`t believe his luck and truly feels appreciated ! What joy he must feel scrowling down the charts to SEE his album just 2 months after its release...VANISHING. NEW has turned out to be a hit album - if ever there was one ! ....at least on this board.

In that context, you are absolutely correct. I'm just p.o.'ed that it didn't hit No. 1. Call me greedy, but this is something that I've wanted to see happen since around 1990.

I appreciate your gallows humor, but there will always be those who are wildly optimistic. Say, say, say what you want!

Billboard just announced a top secret Beatles project coming soon, I believe I called it Jaw Dropping, the other day. Sadly the engineer said he wasn't allowed to talk about it yet, because it was top secret. I think all things Beatle and McCartney will get a big sales bump pretty soon. By the way a million units sold now, is about the same as 2 million units 15-20 years ago, because the record, and cd business has shrunk in half, during that timespan.
-
Has NEW sold 1 million units? That number seems to be thrown around. Just curious.
