Do we LEARN anything from McCartney interviews anymore?

I've learned that Paul was in a group called the Beatles,.....
Tried to google it, and apparently it's German slang for p*n*s strange name for a group.
Beatles sounds like "peedles" which means penises in German.

Although r&b girl-group TLC did have a huge hit called "Waterfalls," I think the interviewer mentioned them in error. I think Paul might've been talking about another artist who ripped off the first line. TLC's doesn't have a line about the "lake."
The chorus of TLC's version is "Don't go chasing waterfalls, please stick to the rivers and the LAKES that you're used to..."

On the other hand, I kinda wish he'd STOP giving any and all interviews for a good long while. After a bad summer, it feels once again like he's way overexposed -- the interviews he just did in advance of the Live Kisses show in the UK, the Hillsborough single, The Dandy comic, the letters he just sent this week to the UN on Meat Free Monday that are getting press attention today, the big 12/12/12 concert next week, then Saturday Night Live. It's too much. Why does he feel he has to be everywhere all the time? Just take a breath, Paul. And, I don't know, record some new music for a change. He doesn't seem to realize that LESS IS MORE sometimes, and that people get irritated by too much publicity like this. But then I suppose that "less is more" has never described our Paul.
Totally agree. Paul's over-exposure is killing his reputation with the general public. I've noticed a real swing against him this year among the people I work with, simply because he's in their faces ALL the time -- invariably embarassing himself.
Ouch. Just to clarify I don't agree that he "invariably embarrasses himself" on any of those things I cited. The Live Kisses show is wonderful, he's great on the Hillsborough single, the Dandy comic is cool, and he sincerely believes in the Meat Free Monday campaign so I respect his activism on that front. Of course it remains to be seen how his voice sounds at 12/12/12 and at SNL. (Fingers crossed.) I was just saying that it's too much all at once. That's what I think people get tired of -- overexposure. But many of the things he's doing are well worth doing -- here and there. It wouldn't hurt him to just disappear from the headlines for 6 months. And that's more than possible. Look at Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Bob Dylan -- none of them are as active in the public eye as Paul (and the UK public seems to love Bowie the more he has disappeared from public life, which is kind of a sad commentary on the public: They like it when aging rock stars don't say anything, do anything or speak out on anything). Anyway, I know Paul likes his life in the spotlight but I guess then he's got to accept that if he's out there talking too much, and too often, it just becomes less and less special.

He'll sound great. He's in the States. His big appearances here go over well. (remember the Grammies and the last SNL appearance the first bad song was an equipment problem, not Paul)

Short answer: No. Long answer: It depends on the publication. It's pretty much pointless to read his interviews with a mainstream publication. His answers are all canned and rehashed Beatles stories -- i.e., boring. The only decent interviews with Paul are the Q&A's he's done with alternative magazines: 1. Pitchfork: On Ram http://pitchfork.com/features/interviews/8854-paul-mccartney 2. Drowned in Sound: On Ram * Part 1: http://drownedinsound.com/in_depth/4145012-paul-mccartney-discusses-songwriting-and-ram-with-mansuns-paul-draper * Part 2: http://drownedinsound.com/in_depth/4145016-paul-mccartney-discusses-his-inspirations-guitars-and-ram-with-mansuns-paul-draper-part-2 3. AV Club: On Memory Almost Full http://www.avclub.com/articles/paul-mccartney,14120 4. The Quietus: Check His Machine * http://thequietus.com/articles/06417-paul-mccartney-interview * http://thequietus.com/articles/06426-paul-mccartney-interview-2 5. LA Weekly: A Fireman Inteviewed http://www.laweekly.com/2009-01-15/music/paul-mccartney-the-kristine-mckenna-interview/ 6. His NPR interview about KOTB is pretty good, too, but he drifts off sometimes into mentioning songwriting with John (again). And all of those interviews have focused on his solo reissues or solo work. When he goes into Beatles mode, as he does in some of those interviews, those journalists brought him back to the subject. It must be an insecurity thing; it's like he thinks he has to, for some reason, like they don't want to hear what he has to say on his own so he feels he has to play the Beatles card. As you have proven with links above, interviewer can control the interiew and concentrate on his solo work . In some cases, it is understable if he goes back to Beatle mode. For example, if they ask him about writing a song it is quite normal to mention how he did things in the beginning with Lennon even if some of us have heard it many times already. The key is for the interviewer is to bring him back to the present with the next question. I bet a lot of us on this board could think of some questions to ask him without ever mentioning the Beatles that would be interesting because of his wonderfully long and successful career after the Beatles. I think you are being a bit too hard on McCartney when it comes to exposure. Was he supposed to turn down the request to play at the Olympics this summer? McCartney spends a lot of time in NYC and seems to love it so it is quite normal that he would want to help and perform at a benefit concert. Maybe he is doing SNL because it is fun and he is in NYC anyway. As for the interviews, he is promoted a show (Live Kisses) and a cause he believes in (Meatless Monday) and what is wrong with that. I thought I read on this site he is in the process of recording a new record so hopefully we will have that to look forward to in 2013. Finally, McCartney is 70 yrs old and sooner than later he is going to disappear from the spotlight and then you may be glad he did all of this stuff when he could.

Interviewer: Sir Paul thank you so much for authorizing this interview for me I couldn't be more.... Paul: Did you know I used to be in the Beatles? (Gives a goofy look and wags his finger) Interview: Er...yeah.

I like very much interviews, may be many of them are the "same" interview, because journalists make the same questions again and again, and it's not Paul's responsability. Add, he have only one life... what else could we know that we no longer know? And, about if he is overexposed, this is a problem of many "celebrities", now we have to many medias, and is normal that find with them... all the time in many places...two decades ago, we didn't have internet, and that's makes a big difference, you don't need buy magazines or journals, you make one clik and "voila" you can find McCartney in many places...I like that!

We dont learn too much the problem is we here are the experts and would be better placed doing a Paul interview.Maybe the interviewer is asking questions for the benefit of the 20s year olds, the shows demographics etc. still doesn't stop me from tunning in

Believe me, I wish that some more current interviews with Paul would go into more solo stuff, etc. I would say (and I think I'm being very generous here) we haven't really "learned" anything else about Paul since interviews for Flaming Pie. There was a UK mag which I have a copy of where he seemed more honest and forthcoming than in US interviews from that time period. I wouldn't mind seeing more of that, and less about Beatles 24/7.

I'd ask him when he's going to record a new version of Return Of Pepperland with production by George Martin!
