But McCartney conceived the album to celebrate the growing CD revolution at the time. A good listen via headphones makes the case better than I can.
For this album I'd say earplugs are more appropriate than headphones.

I think the connection wingsdgm made to David Byrne and Talking Heads was interesting. "Tug of War" and "Pipes of Peace" had that smooth Toto West Coast / AOR pop rock soound. But "Press to Play" are more quirky and art-pop. One can hear that McCartney listened to another type of music in the mid-80s.
PTP is dripping in Phil Collins. And I don't mean that as a compliment.
I'm glad that you mentioned him, but first: Phil drummed his ass off on "Angry," but I digress. People scoff at PTP's heavy-keyboard, sequenced production; yet they still love Genesis' "Tonight Tonight Tonight," which is STILL a soft-rock radio staple.
Don't forget that some of the tracks on PTP are completely live in the studio, a tight rock band performance, like "Angry" with Phil Collins on drums, "Move Over Busker" and "Stranglehold". And I think also "Good Times Coming / Feel the Sun". Quite unusual and "old-fashioned" in the overdubbing mid-80s. There are three 80s production numbers in "Talk More Talk", "Press" and "Pretty Little Head". "Only Love Remains" and "Howver Absurd" are big orchestrations. "Footprints" is an acoustic number. It's quite varied. The production is sharp and clean rather than 1986 state of the art. I think what could have been McCartney's real 80s album got cancelled and it's "Return to Pepperland". But all in all there are only scattered tracks here and there. A handful of them. If it is a flaw there aren't many greatest hits on it. But instead it's at least to my ears, a fine album of quirky art-pop and rockers, that I like a lot.

Cannot polish a turd.
-
Agreed. Fortunately, in PTP's case: Most fans agree that genuine songs were simply over-polished. You wanna talk turds? Let's switch the topic to Wild Life.

Yet... I don't hate Wild Life..... There's three or four real good offerings... My problem with that album is it is so lazily made/produced at a time when Paul needed the exact opposite to be treated seriously.... terrible timing. A terrible timing of release. That is my main issue. Strip it apart, and if he spent more time on an half-assed effort in some songs, and it could've been really alright. Good. Great. It never eventuated as the album it shouldve been, that all of Beatles' fans wanted there and then, but it wasn't that far off from a kinda primitive Mccartney album.... I might get myself in trouble here.... but move Maybe I'm Amazed or one other predecessor classic to Wild Life.... and then I think Wild Life is much better than the debut album. Far better core of other songs on Wild Life, fo me. Primitive, yes, but better.

"Wild Life" is a good one. It's like a homemade live recording and "McCartney" with a band, live in the living room while rehearsing. It's just another 'happy accident' where McCartney are ahead of his time and made Indie pop and rock decades before the term even existed.

Wild Life is the polar-opposite of effectively introducing your band's debut album.

I guess The Beatles' Let It Be had set already set the precedent for that sort of record. Wild Life isn't just lazy; it also reeks of writer's block and a shocking lack of inspiration.

It sounds like "A Catholic Education" by Teenage Fanclub. I have much love for Indie ramshackleness.

It's just a lack of ambition. The inspiration is there. But it's "homegrown".

Great album! It lacks polish but has plenty of charm. I actually prefer ACE to the more recognized followup "Bandwagonesque".

You're right: It's Wild Life With More Distortion. Vocals are pretty flat, though. I don't mind rough vocals (like G. Love & Special Sauce), but this is too hard on me ears.

Right, with a 90s distortion. It's a wonderful album if you're in the mood for it. It's amateurish sounding. It's fun to play "A Catholitic Education (1990) and "Shadows" (2010) back to back and listen to their progress as a band. They have become better musicians in the twenty years.

Noted. Fortunately, Wings got better over time, too -- all three bands. "ZING!"

Yeah, I think it's difficult to view Wings as a band. As there aren't the kind of progress you'd expect. It's more like different projects with McCartney in front. In a way, I think Wings are misunderstood. The thing is that "Wild Life" is a much better album than "Band on the Run" in an alternative / Indie genre. Among Indie and low fi fans, there are those who believe "Wild Life" is the best Wings album.

I can appreciate McCartney. I love McCartney II. But Wild Life is a swing-and-a-miss to me.
-
I love the sound in all 3 Albums (McCartney/Ram/Wings Wild Life) ...it was the times , funky period..

I love the song Tomorrow though!
