FourFiveSeconds- new collab. with Rihanna, Kanye and Paul

Love is Paul:
The song enters the Billboard Hot 100 at #54: http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6451195/rihanna-kanye-west-paul-mccartney-fourfiveseconds-hot-100
Impressive for less than two days on sale. Radio play helped, too. The article says it "should surge" next week. Looks like it will.

I think these songs are good. Not my cup of tea, but Paul writing for others is a good place to be at this moment. The song Diana Krall did is gorgeous. Why he didn't record it, I'll never understand. It's better than anything on NEW.
Because his judgement as opposed to his many talents is dubious. Always has been. Since thinking Hey Jude as an A side was not a good idea...
And not releasing Maybe I'm Amazed as a single in 1970! :

Looks like this new single will go Top 10. A Top 40 & Top 10 for Paul in a month. This is like the early 80s all over again! Congrats to Paul.
Apparently you missed the memo from certain other posters here that this is all a tragic embarrassment and humiliation that will destroy Paul's legacy forever. And also trigger the Zombie Apocalypse (okay, technically they haven't mentioned that part yet, but someone will soon enough).

Mods please delete this thread and any other references to these "collaborations". We've been humiliated and embarrassed enough! Legacy tarnished! Confirmed!
These kids today! Next thing you know, Elvis will be swiveling his hips on TV, turning our kids into savages!
yeah. it's just like Elvis. :
Actually, it is. Every generation, kids discover new music that's different from their parents' generation's tastes, and adults roll their eyes and say, " I don't believe the crap these kids listen to nowadays!" So it was with Elvis, and the Beatles, and punk, and disco, and hip hop, and on and on and on and on...
Really? Kanye asking Paul "what p***y was like in the 60s" is like Elvis? Not it isn't. You're wrong. And Elvis changed music for everyone. So did the Beatles. This is not even close to doing that.
Uh, nothing in the post I responded to referred to that specific remark of Kanye's (which, for the record, I do find stupid and annoying). I try to respond to what's actually written and not read into people's posts things that aren't there. I find that to be a really useful policy.
See? That wasn't so painful. Now Nancy can sleep tonight! Ha ha! BTW, I responded to what you actually wrote. I disagree with you. It's OK. Deal with it.
You still don't get it. Did you read Bruce's post just below the one you quoted? And, I'm not sleeping tonight not because of you, but because I'm on call for the O.R.
Ah, to be 15 years old once again!
Real intelligent comeback. I hope you're never in need of an experienced O.R. nurse. And btw, I got called in at 4:15 am for a craniotomy on a young man who had been in a car accident.
What??? Hope that guy is ok, btw.
Thought you were implying I was 15. (far from it!)

Exactly. I was amazed that "From A Lover To A Friend" was the first single from "Driving Rain" when there were other songs that were much better choices like "About You". Mr. McCartney does quite well writing songs for other artists. His song "On The Wings Of A Nightengale" was absolutely a perfect song for the Everly Brothers in 1984.

Even Paul in interviews had admitted he may not be the best person to decide what in his albums should be released as singles. Maybe I'm Amazed as Exhibit A.

I think that was Paul holding on to the idea that albums and singles should be separate entities, the way the Beatles had (mostly) done, in the UK anyway. Still, the fact that he embellished the song at Abbey Road Studios shows that he wanted it to have some life aside from being just another album track.

The standout song on the album. AND a film clip produced to promote it, but still no single...

It's good but very stripped down... I also like ONE

I have to say I am totally baffled as to why Paul is collaborating with Kanye West, of all people. This is honestly the first time I have found myself questioning Paul's judgment. I simply cannot take West or others like him seriously as viable musical artists, regardless of whatever success they may have achieved. I think a lot of the success results from image, attitude and publicity and not so much from the material itself. I have listened to these two songs with as open a mind as I can muster and I just can't get into them. The first one they released, to me, seems rather directionless and lacking a discernible sense of melody. Add to that the fact that West's voice is heavily auto-tuned throughout, to the extent that it barely sounds like a human voice, and the result is a bit of a shambles in my opinion. The other one, 'FourFiveSeconds' doesn't fare much better I'm afraid. Once again, West's voice is loaded with auto-tune and the lyrics are laughable to say the least. Rihanna is also pushing her voice far too hard on this track. I actually liked her contribution to Coldplay's 'Princess of China' a lot because it worked in the context of that particular arrangement, but here she is going too far over the top. Personally I don't really understand Paul's logic behind this collaboration. He has no need to try to stay relevant. Look at Paul's latest album for instance. It features no high-profile collaborations at all and it's a brilliant, brilliant album. It doesn't matter whether it's relevant in the context of the modern industry or not. If he is going to collaborate with other artists, he may as well do it with genuinely talented musicians - perhaps people like Ron Sexsmith, Sting, Coldplay or Mark Knopfler for example - unique musicians who have a genuine sense of melody and arrangement. To fans who like these new songs, I mean no criticism of you and hold nothing against you of course - it's just my humble opinion as a musician. Personally I am looking forward to Paul getting back out on the road and perhaps recording for a new album of some description before too long?preferably minus Kanye West!

You are correct GMAN, yet the "fans" here will say you are unreasonable, and insult you like they have me. The few true fans on this board have supported me, and agreed that we have been humiliated beyond repair. Kanye cannot sing or play an instrument. Musically speaking...what have you got? The last few years we've had the humiliating experience of : jayz linkin park at Grammys, Pauls voice cracking at that same show, Jayz wearing a Lennon shirt at that show as if to mock Paul, Horsens cancellations, stale setlists, "Appreciate", and robot buddy, admitting he buys rap albums, going to rap concerts, kids not knowing who Macca is,and now the Kanye Rihanna collaboration which is only #54 in the charts and has been confirmed a flop by many. Our legacy was slightly tarnished when 80% of the live show turned into a Beatles fest while our solo output was ignored. Add to that these recent incidents, and our legacy is truly tarnished beyond repair. If he doesn;t change his ways he will be remembered in 50 years as the guy who was Rihanna and Kaynes session musician. Embarassing.

How the heck is somebody wearing a Lennon shirt mocking Paul? Does this mean nobody on this earth is allowed to wear Lennon shirts anymore? Also, what is this about "Our" legacy. It's not YOUR legacy, it's not MY legacy, this is Paul's legacy. And Paul's legacy is just fine. I also stand by my you are just trolling comment from earlier.

I'm sorry, but no one on this board will take you seriously when you keep on saying over and over again that Paul's legacy is damaged beyond repair because of these collaborations. You keep on pushing hyperbole over fact time and time again with your statements. Firstly, the Grammy thing a few years back: so what if Jay-Z wore a Lennon shirt? Does that mean that myself, and millions of other fans around the world who wear John Lennon shirts are continuously mocking Paul? That doesn't make any sense! Do you own a John Lennon shirt? If you wear it, you must be mocking Paul, right? And also, when did Paul's voice crack during that performance? It didn't! Moreover, the Rihanna/Kanye/Paul collaboration is not a flop. No one has said that. It's actually climbing the charts. Paul's having success on the charts, and that doesn't make you happy? What will? Secondly, so what if Paul buys rap albums and goes to rap concerts? He has the right to. He's a musician. He's allowed to broaden his horizons with any genre he may choose. I think what it boils down to is that you don't like rap. And that's fine. But there's no need to criticize Paul because he wants to delve into other musical genres. Lastly, you are the only one on this board to constantly state that Paul's legacy is somehow irreparably damaged beyond repair. And trust me, his legacy is BEYOND CEMENTED at this point. Unless you can provide facts and evidence to back up your dislike of these collaborations, please stop. You're only embarrassing yourself. You're just being annoying and childish, and it does nothing to further conversation here.
