FourFiveSeconds- new collab. with Rihanna, Kanye and Paul
-
I think it's great that the song has climbed the charts. Then again I always like to see Paul and his various projects get commercial and critical success.
-
Hendrix Ibsen:
It has become his biggest hit in thirty years but I think it's been done some compromises for it to happen. For me, it belongs more among guest appearances and collaborations than on a Paul McCartney Greatest Hits compilation. At least technically.
You mean like Come and Get It, which was covered on the Art of McCartney?
-
If it's a huge hit song for McCartney, then he'll play it on concert.
-
No, don't misunderstand me, I think it's a great song, The Art of McCartney represent the songwriter, "On the Wings of a Nightingale" by The Everly Brothers could have (like "Come and Get It") been on that album, it's a great McCartney written song, but I don't think it could have been included on a Paul McCartney greatest hits, it is performed by The Everly Brothers, even though he play acosutic guitar and sing harmonies. But of course, it all depends on how you look at it. I don't think it's anything wrong with crediting Paul McCartney as performer on "FourFiveSeconds", it's just that it is treated a little different from the other type of collaborations he's done in the past, which is okay, there are no specific rules to this, only different ways to do it.

I agree with you. I think it is cool for Paul to collaborate, be a guest performer, sing back ups, etc. Maybe a compilation should be made of those types of McCartney projects.
-
Yeah, I think that sounds like a good idea, I'd love to have a best of McCartney guest appearances and collaborations compilation in my collection. Nowadays I'm listening to a double album called "The Early Works of George Martin", with some of his best production work, from The Beatles to The Vipers. I also have this Burt Bacharach 3Cd box set in my collection "The Look of Love: The Burt Bacharach Collection". It's an exstensive compilation of Burt produced smash hits with various artists.

Hey, I'll be honest: if someone had played me this song and then told me the history behind it, I would not categorize it as a Paul McCartney song. But that's the way it has been credited (as with hits by Quincy Jones or Grover Washingotn, Jr. or Mark Ronson) and that's the way the charts treat it, so I'll go with it and be excited about it, just as I would be if "Ocean's Kingdom" had somehow been a huge mainstream hit album. To me, it would seem awkward to put it on a McCartney hits compilation, but if he's claiming it as his own, which he is, I see nothing wrong with adding it to his chart achievements. The song would simply not exist without him,

Agreed. Whoever contributes to the songwriting gets the credit. Whether it is Paul, Quincy Jones or whoever. I would also not have known it was Paul unless his name wasn't attached.

Just a few days ago, I heard this song on a Top 40 station in its original mix, but then today, on the same station, they played it with a new mix, with beats behind it. Not overwhelming production, but definitely more "radio-friendly."

Is there a link for the newer version?

I can't find one. Maybe it's not an officially sanctioned remix.

This week on the Billboard chart, the song falls from #4 to #6. Sales have dropped, but radio airplay has increased, so it's anyone's guess what happens next week. It's #1 for a third week on the R&B/Hip-Hop chart. (Billboard announces the Hot 100's Top 10 every Wednesday and then the rest of the Hot 100 on Thursday.)

Kind of like a spin of the wheel?

It may hover in the same general range for a bit if sales don't increase but radio play keeps heading up. Probably not a #1 unless sales tick back up.

It was just added to Spotify yesterday, so a boost in streams should help.

Here we go, folks! An interview with Kanye where he discusses everything we've been discussing: http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/6487341/kanye-west-cries-bbc-zane-lowe-interview Of course, there are some crazy quotes and a lot about fashion, and I just skipped through to try to find the interesting parts: about 21:00 - He discusses "Only One" and "FourFiveSeconds" and how he was awed meeting and playing with Paul. about 26:00 - He breaks down in tears discussing a friend from the fashion industry who had died. about 36:00 - He discusses the Beck/Grammy incident, admitting that he went overboard. Also strongly hints that he'll be touring with Rihanna this year.

Here are a couple of his comments on Macca courtesy of Rolling Stone Lowe presses West to discuss working with "Only One" and "FourFiveSeconds" collaborator Paul McCartney specifically, and West spoke with reverence about the former Beatle. "Meeting Paul McCartney was like meeting Ralph Lauren," he states. "[They are] the greatest of their fields. Period. Of all time." Working with McCartney was a great learning experience for West, musically. "The types of chord changes that Paul does...I don't even understand them," he said. "That's because he invented them," added Lowe. West continued "To be able to be involved with writing a song like that is way next [level]." He notes that on "FourFiveSeconds" the cadence is trap above the "Seventies FM radio" sound that Lowe pointed out. The song will continue to chart pretty well this week. It's now up to #8 on the Mediabase Top 40 airplay chart and is hovering at #4 on iTunes at the moment and #12 on Spotify's streaming chart. So not #1 but clearly still in the Top 10.

So excited about his collaboration with Kanye~! So brilliant...this single is one catchy timeless tune. The new single "All Day" is the best Kanye/McCartney song yet
