JAMES McCARTNEY
-
I read on James' Wikipedia page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_McCartney that he almost drowned when he was 16. "In 1993, at age 16, while surfing with friends, he was swept out to sea. Coast-guard was called and his family rushed to the site, but he emerged safe on his own 40 minutes later." Hadn't heard that before. Must have been a scary experience for him and his parents and sisters. Glad everything turned out ok. He definitely had a guardian angel looking out for him!

Paul talked about it at some point and how scared he was that they thought they'd lost him. Not sure what year he (Paul) finally talked about it. Anybody know?

Found this in a biography of Paul, it's just a brief quote from him, but maybe it can help someone remember what interview it's from: Howard Sounes, Fab: An Intimate Life of Paul McCartney, page 417 "...on 13 September 1993, Stella McCartney's 22nd birthday. Stella, studying in London for a career in fashion design, was home in Sussex with the family when the McCartneys received news that James, who'd celebrated his 16th birthday the previous day, had gone missing surfing off Camber Sands. A lifeboat was launched and an RAF helicopter sent up as Paul drove to the scene. 'It's a three-mile drive and all sorts of thought were going through my head,' Paul later said. Fortunately James was found alive and well..."

That book was when I first read/heard about it. I bought it in 2011 after I saw it in a bookstore in Liverpool! It was published in 2010.

I did not know that James almost drowned! I don't even want to think about that one!

I didn't see that the incident was mentioned in too many sources... The Philip Norman book had a brief sentence about it. Was thinking maybe Paul talked about it in TV interviews or something. That's great you were buy the book in Liverpool!

That topic is not a very popular discussion, I bet Paul refuses to talk about it.

If I were him I wouldn't... would be too painful to think about. Thankfully everything turned out well.

It was in the middle of his 3 nights in london at Earls Court in 1993 (i saw him on the last night), there was lots of TV coverage the night/morning it happened, on the breakfast telly news i remember at least - showing Paul and Linda looking concerned by the beach and then a quick soundbite later saying James didn't even know he'd been reported missing and wasn't worried as he'd wash up eventually!!

That must have been so scary for his parents though, to have to worry like that. I remember when my brother was 5 he and a neighbor boy went missing for three hours, my mom was frantic, they couldn't be found anywhere. Neighbors combed the neighborhood... they went to the ice cream parlor a few blocks away to see if they went there... Finally my parents and the other little boy's dad called the police, and they did a search, and they found my brother and his friend fishing with home made fishing poles by this little river which ran about 1/4 mile from our house, they had been there all the time, and didn't think anything was wrong, lol. There were no hooks on the strings attached to the fishing poles so I don't know what they were expecting to catch, lol. Anyway, when the police car drove up with my little brother in it, all we could see was the top of his head through the window, but he was scared because he thought he was going to jail for not telling my mom where he had been, lol. He was so scared that when he got out of the police car he just ran in the house without even hugging my mom... anyway, my point is, sometimes it's easy to think the worst, but it's good someone is out there looking and helping, just in case!

Remember this from earlier in this thread?
Eeee Cor Blimey:
YES! I was totally pissed off when i opened it up. If you didn't know you'd even paid for a signed cd you'd think it was part of the drawing it's that bad! here's what we got in the post as our "signed cd" James should be trying to keep the fans he has, not pissing them off!
well look, he can bother to sign his full name on these!!!

I'm seeing James play tonight in DC! I've never seen him live before. I have The Blackberry Train album and love it, although I still need to catch up and get his other album and EP's.
-
How was the DC show? Did you take any video or photos? I heard there wasn't too many there.
-
I got the scribble cd. I question that he even did it.
-
James is going to perform May 7th in Santa Cruz, CA, just a stones throw from us, in a very small venue. We are thinking about going.
