Great comments at the end of this PR release. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/andy-hoglund-/how-kanyes-only-one-makes_b_6404816.html?utm_hp_ref=entertainment&ir=Entertainment
Good read. And funny!
Comments by... exactly that audience who is clueless. Paul McCartney is selling out stadiums based on his output up to 50+ years ago. Kanye West is being regarded as one of the most important artists of 2015, for his upcoming output. Paul McCartney is creatively very relevant though, what for me counts just as much, and his collaboration with one of his creative peers Kanye West is another way in which he expresses that in 2015. Here's something more, by Myf Warhurst of The Guardian:
Kanye West and Paul McCartney: haters will hate but anything that opens minds to new material works for me That some people don?t know Macca is a kick in the guts to those who still insist the popular music of yore is still the most important in the world [..] It?s not surprising this collaboration has inspired a wave of negative comments at the bottom of news articles. In my 20-plus years working in music print and radio I?ve never stopped hearing self-described music lovers saying they don?t like ?that rap crap?. Even though this particular song is a ballad, West will always be associated with hip-hop, hence the instant vitriol. [..] [..] But before we slam the others, stop to consider that a familiarity with Sir Paul?s oeuvre depends on where, when and with whom you?ve grown up. That some people don?t know Macca any more is a kick in the guts to people who still insist the popular music of yore is still the most important music in the world. [..]

I believe that BOTH artists have fans that basically don't really care about the other artist. And there is nothing wrong with that. I don't care for early country either. So what? We all have musical preferences. Music can't be forced on anyone. If you listen & it makes you feel good...more power to you.

I've been saying for years that "Momma Miss America" was ripe for a hot hip-hop track.
Momma Miss America has already made its appearance on hip hop tracks. It's drum break has been sampled by the Beastie Boys, Common, The Roots, and others.
I even posted Momma Miss America above Audi's post.

Kanye is almost 38 years old. He's been around for a while. If Paul were collaborating with Justin Bieber or Carly Rae Jepsen ("Call Me Maybe"), that would be embarrassing, because they have virtually no resume; heck, it would be embarrassing for even Kanye to work with them. People keep referring to Kanye as if he were just some novelty act or something. I can understand not personally liking him, but in no way is it embarrassing musically for Paul to work with him.
Kanye has had SIX No. 1 albums in a row -- out of the 7 albums he's released since 2004. And his last 3 or 4 albums have received massive acclaim from the critics. He's been praised as an artist by people as varied as Bruce Springsteen and Lou Reed. It's bizarre that anyone would think Paul is embarrassing himself or "lowering" himself to work with Kanye.
Precisely!!!!

"Only One" enters the Billboard Hot 10o at #35, after being available for only the second half of last week. It's certain to move higher next week, as it's been consistently in the iTunes Top 10 ever since its release. Since Billboard treats a "featured artist" the same as a "lead artist" on a single, that means that this is already Paul's biggest hit since "My Brave Face," which reached #25 in 1989. Can it top the #7 peak in early 1986 of "Spies Like Us"?

Like I stated earlier, the only reason this record will chart is because of Kanye and little to do with McCartney. Maybe it is me but I can't get that excited about him being in the charts again with this song. Now if it was a song like "New" when it was released than I would have been more impressed and happier.

Just for kicks, I thought I'd take a look at what they're saying on Kanye's forum on HIS website. Some people love it, some people think it sounds unfinished, some people think it's not aggressive enough, but this comment struck me especially: "Paul McCartney is the ONLY reason this song had a proper release. If he wasn't on it, it would have dropped on Kanye's website and not been available on iTunes for like 8 weeks lol." And here's how they respond to all the negative tweets and comments that say Paul lowered himself to work with Kanye, and that Kanye's fans are dumb: "Lmao these people are just as bad as the news Implying all kanye fans are alike" and then: "They gonna be so ****ing pissed when they find out that Kanye and Paul did even more songs together." (I think that's pretty funny myself.)
-
It's kind of heartwarming that Kanye's fans can disagree just like we do: "IMO it's probably one of the most underwhelming singles he's ever released, maybe even the worst single of his solo career. It's too stripped back to go on for 5 minutes, the auto-tune completely dilutes the vibe of the song, there's a number of cringe-worthy lines on the track. This is at least easily the most mixed reacted lead single he's ever released." And here's the reaction: "wtf what age are you?the lyrics are the least cringeworthy ever lol. Amazingly written actually better then anything in the Top 10 chart. The reviews are overwelming positive and He autotune is not overly done. Lol wtf." And more: "A lot of his stuff lately has sound unfinished, like he's purposely trying to pursue that "raw" sound, but he isnt really doing anything shocking or raw that would benefit from such a production technique. Like at all. Especially on a song like this where it just sounds half-assed, like a demo of a jam session that took place on a lazy Sunday afternoon. I can almost smell the incense." But then one fan reprints his review from a blog entry: "At around 3 am still buzzed and scrolling Twitter while my significant other was brushing her teeth (priorities I know), I stumbled across the news that Kanye West had dropped a new collaboration with the legendary Beatles icon Paul McCartney. This gave me a sudden burst of energy and I immediately played the song on my phone.... "After giving ?Only One? a proper listen in more ideal conditions, Kanye?s crooning over the beautiful organ work of Sir Paul rose to new heights.... "But Kanye knows deep down that his mother would be proud of his accomplishments, regardless of his flaws, and it is only right that he highlights these feelings within his music. And while the majority of music fans would consider Mr. West as the inferior artist on this collaboration, Paul McCartney is a man who is entirely familiar with this idea. ?Let It Be? (one of his countless gems) contains an extremely similar influence as ?Only One?, that being the death of a mother and its effect on a child...." http://www.hitpmusic.com/why-kanye-wests-only-one-is-important/ And they're all amused at all the people who didn't realize the "Who is Paul McCartney?" thing was a joke.

I have a rather sad admission...I can't even hear Paul's contribution in this song

You can't hear the piano/organ? He's playing it, so why wouldn't that be considered his contribution? Not to mention he wrote the song with Kanye West. McCartney has always searched for inspiration within an eclectic variety of musical styles: Oceans Kingdom (an opportunity to write the music for a ballet). Liverpool Oratorio and The Standing Stone (creatively exploring the world of classical music) Ecce Cor Meum (spiritual choir music) The Fireman (an opportunity to work with Youth and produce some fine avant-garde electronic/ambient music). Cut Me Some Slack (an opportunity to rock out with the boys from Nirvana). His earlier work with Elvis Costello. His work with Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson. And Carl Perkins. Collaboration with jazz great, Stanley Clarke Collaboration with Eric Stewart (10cc) Brief flirtation with disco resulting in the amazing track "Goodnight Tonight" Recording in Nashville with Chet Atkins Collaboration with Indian musician Nitin Sawhney His work with Diane Krall and the great Tommy LiPuma Rockestra and the list goes on.........and now his willingness to bravely explore another musical genre by working with Kanye West. Really quite amazing when you think about it.

Not only did it chart with only half a week's worth of sales, it charted without benefit of radio play -- it's not even available for airplay till Jan. 13: http://fmqb.com/Article.asp?id=16691 At the moment it's holding at #9 on iTunes, so it seems a safe bet that it will move up the chart over the next couple weeks as radio picks it up, which it will.

Thanks, yes, plus not available for streaming yet either, which also now feeds into Billboard's rankings. By the way, someone on the Kanye fan forum started a "chart watch" thread for this song, and it's already over 100 pages long.

I was never happy to hear the two were collaborating.... but I was also willing to throw my hands in the air on listening and admit "I was w-w-w-wrong, this is really good, wow, this is revolutionary"..... but to me, it ain't..... it's pedestrian. It offers nothing new. It's just a plain song. Didn't offend me. But it's just pedestrian.

I had to strain to hear it also so you are not alone. I assume he did backup vocal but it is hard to hear him and the piano playing is very soft also.

Amazing to actually see the name "Paul McCartney" listed on a single cracking the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart at # 35. I hope it hits # 1. Kanye piggyback ride or not, a number #1 single out of this would totally count in Paul's hit singles discography on Billboard, Wiki and otherwise. Paul totally deserves it - his singles have been astoundingly ignored by radio and the charts since 1989. At least some of those singles ("New", "The World Tonight", "Hope Of Deliverance", for example) should have been huge hit singles in the U.S. If those songs had been released anytime between around 1966 and the early 80's they all likely would have been number #1 singles - and deservedly so. If "Only One" hits the top of Billboard, wouldn't it be great for Paul to be able to say his most recent #1 single was in 2015?? Now THAT would be something. And I think it might help the next new album lead single from Paul get more attention on the radio perhaps

Agreed. Good to see Paul have another Top 40 hit in the States. Hope it goes to #1.

You might want to have your hearing checked. His keyboard playing is quite obvious, and then there is that lengthy outro that's only Paul's keyboard. Did you miss that, too?

I was thinking the same thing! Hey--did anyone hear the mix of the song with drums on it? You can barely hear Paul's keyboard playing!

I can barely even hear Mr. Kardashian singing with those drums beating his vocal out of proceedings! ... well, to be fair, I stopped listening after a minute.
