Wow. A whole conversation about word usage.
We do it all! Shall we break down your emoticons next?
Again???

Well, either way we look at it... this collaboration has not been very effective in having an affect on the people or the charts.... It's not a horrible song, but for me, it's a song that would sit at number 10 or 11 on a traditional 13- song album. And that's me being generous. It's very average. Could even be something that should be on a B-side. Not surprised it is slipping down the charts. Yet, in the same breath, I am relieved... it could've been so much worse. And yet again, I will keep my mind open..... maybe the next collaboration on offer might surprise me. Maybe.

The song did make me more open to hearing the next one....

Not sure why you say it's not having an effect on the people or charts. Reactions seem to have generally been positive. It just entered the Australian Top 10: http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6436503/kanye-west-paul-mccartneys-only-one-enters-australias-top-10. In the U.S. it's #2 on the hip-hop sales chart (Kanye's home base, after all) and is gaining traction on radio. And, perhaps because it seems like an "odd couple" pairing, it's generated gobs of publicity. Yeah, it slipped a bit on the Hot 100, but as discussed before, that chart is based in roughly equal measure on sales, radio airplay and streaming. Two of those elements had not kicked in at all as of last week's chart, where it slipped a bit, so it could well rebound. Singles are a marketing tool, and thus far this one seems like a roaring success.

I'm just saying, from what I am reading, the song is falling down the mainstream charts rather than climbing. And rather quickly. The "Celebrated Mr. K" would find this a little upsetting, I would imagine.... Now, I could be wrong here, because I am certainly no expert or fan of Mr. Kardashian, but I may have read that this is the first release from his next album. Again, I could be wrong.... It may just be a teaser.... I just think that Kimmy's bigger butt might be a bit disappointed with the commercial response. Sure, it's done reasonably well, but doesn't seem to be a huge seller.... Is probably down on expectations and on his prior releases...But, it could turn around in the charts pretty quickly and I could be proven wrong.

Your mistake is in thinking that Kanye is a top 10 singles artist. He isn't and never has been. His singles chart very inconsistently. All you have to do is look at his discography on wikipedia and you can see that, while his last 6 albums have all hit No. 1, his singles rarely make the top 4o. He hasn't had a top 10 single since 2011 and that was a song he did with Jay-Z. In fact, this new single with Paul has done better, chart wise, in both the UK and US and elsewhere, than most of Kanye's singles in recent years. Kanye is used to No. 1 on the albums chart, not on the singles chart.

Yes, it's kind of like Justin Bieber. People have this vague sense that they don't like his music, but they don't really know any of it, even though his albums have been big. (Not to say that JB's music is good, though!)

"The Celebrated Mr. K" Good one!
-
Kanye & Paul need to appear on the Ellen show to promote the new collaboration & perform the song. Paul needs another #1 single!

Not sure how Kanye would sing it live. The vocal is 100% an auto tune product. Dreadful stuff, IMHO. If this is what it takes to get to #1 these days, I say Paul is better off without a new hit single.

Vocals can be somewhat auto tuned live, or he could sing along to his prerecorded vocal, if he wanted to. The Grammys are coming up, and that show loves to have superstar collaborations. Just a thought!

Someone on a Kanye West forum posted these fairly impressive stats on radio pickup (the number on the left appears to be the # of stations in that format that added the song): http://www.kanyetothe.com/forum/index.php?topic=2414569.2088 Most added at Rhythmic stations 25 KANYE WEST Only One f/Paul McCartney G.O.O.D./Def Jam 17 THE WEEKND Earned It XO/Republic 16 CASEY VEGGIES Backflip f/YG & IAMSU Epic Second most added at Urban stations 29 THE WEEKND Earned It XO/Republic 25 KANYE WEST Only One f/Paul McCartney G.O.O.D./Def Jam 20 CASEY VEGGIES Backflip f/YG & IAMSU Epic Ninth most added at Pop stations 61 ELLIE GOULDING, Love Me Like You Do Cherrytree/Interscope 59 MAROON 5 Sugar 222/Interscope 48 CALVIN HARRIS, Outside f/Ellie Goulding Fly Eye/Columbia 47 TAYLOR SWIFT Style Big Machine/Republic 43 KELLY CLARKSON Heartbeat Song RCA 29 NE-YO She Knows f/Juicy J Motown/Capitol 29 TOVE LO Talking Body Island/Republic 23 LILLYWOOD & SCHULZ, ROBIN Prayer In C Big Beat/RRP 23 KANYE WEST Only One f/Paul McCartney G.O.O.D./Def Jam

Vocals can be somewhat auto tuned live...
They can be -- and often are. Ed Sheeran uses pitch-correction mics at nearly every concert I've seen of his. Madonna, Katy Perry and others alike have used them in their concerts more often than not. Chris Brown uses them -- and he can actually sing!

Warning: Worst country song since Scotty McCreery's "I Love You This Big."Yikes, I've heard one or two Florida Georgia Line songs before, but this is horrible. (Still not as bad as Tim McGraw's "Truck Yeah," but close.) Yes, that performance is definitely autotuned, and they even do some hip-hop moves!

"Only One" enters FMQB's Rythmic airplay chart at #40, up 224 spins from the same period one week ago and likely to move up at least a couple notches pretty quickly, as the songs right above it in the chart seem to be losing steam: http://www.fmqb.com/Article.asp?id=255600

A good example. Thanks. Confirms for me that Paul should have nothing to do with this kind of nonsense. He is better than that. If this is the state of popular music, I think he will do well by steering clear. I do realize, by the way, that Paul has also used auto tune. But the Kanye song essentially uses auto tune to turn spoken word into melody. That is too much for my ears to bear.

Although, conversely, I may simply be becoming a cynical old man at 45, though I shudder to think so. ops:
