The "Paul Forgot The Lyrics" Thread

As Paul would say, it's allowed.

this one is one of his biggest oops. liverpool, mrs lennon and harrison watching, hometown crowd, singing one of johns classics and he forgets the words....ouch! the funny thing was that he got the lennon words spot on and couldnt remember the bit he wrote himself!
and he got the same lyrics wrong in Kiev too....also I remember another show but cant remember which one that he got them wrong again. It was becoming nice if he actually got them right

It was our beloved Linda, actually, who said that to Paul. But why quibble with such smart logic, right?

Mistakes I found on bootlegs of concerts (not of shows I've been too) - Here Today from Nassau Coloseum back in 2002. The chords to the chorus (where he sings 'And as for me, I still remember...), it's a simple C F C...etc. But on that night, he somehow got lost between the first C and F and had to find 'it' again (although it was done fairly quickly and it didn't sound like the crowd even knew)... The second is a recording I have of No One from somewhere on the 2004 European tour (during that tour, the song was arranged slightly different)...He pretty much forgot every verse except the first and the last He definitely used the 'It's allowed' comment there - even though Linda coined that phrase for Paul back in the early seventies when he was stressed from the Beatles break up, there's no doubt that Paul picked up that line and ran with it many times when he's made mistakes on these recent tours
-
By the way, I have been at a couple of shows where there were mistakes, although except for one case, these mistakes slipped by until I heard a bootleg or youtube video after the fact: At the second Boston/Fenway show this past summer - he sang the 'only lonely place is on the moon' line twice during Jet Back in 2005 at the Boston Fleet Center (first of the two nights I went to) - He screwed something up on I Will...But I didn't catch exactly what...If Paul himself didn't stop and acknowledge that he had made a mistake, then starting again from the point of the mistake, I wouldn't have ever known. This last one was the only one I actually noticed and actually involved his scripted 'between song' banter (so I don't know if this counts). Back during 89/90 tour, he introduced The Long and Winding Road by saying 'We're going to go back in time...to the 60's. On the first night of his two night stop in Worcester, MA in Feb of that year, he simply just broke into the song and when it was done, he quickly gave a 'btw, that was a trip back to the 60's'...LOL

Well, one flub out of 40,000,000 performances of that song ain't too bad, I guess.

Yes, as Brian Ray said on an interview on his website people find it endearing when he goofs up. In Halifax this past summer he didn't forget the lyrics, but he had to re-do them in the opening of Paperback writer because he started in the wrong key.
We would have been fine with his quick mention of the error, for some reason he brought it up again after the song, which was cute as he explained which keys it was. Maybe he likes to hear the audience agree to the "it's allowed" line. -
When I saw him in DC in 2005, during "For No One" (my favorite song of all time, btw), he sang "She stays home, she goes out" instead of "You stay home, she goes out." And this year, at the Fedex Field show, during "A Day in the Life" he didn't forget the words, but he kind of shoved together the "But I just had to laugh, I saw the photograph" lines into one line (if that makes sense).
at :36 is what I'm talking about. -

I don't have a You Tube link but I saw him many of his concerts in 1989/1990 and more often than not, he'd flub the lyrics to My Brave Face. I don't think he used a teleprompter in those days, unlike now - you would think it would be easier to get the words right these days but he still messes them up LOL. However, these are the little things that make it interesting and as Paul has said when he makes a mistake at a show, at least you know we're playing live!
Sometimes, Paul is more reliable than technology. In the Back In The U.S. DVD there's a scene when Paul is advising a roadie of an error in the lyrics displayed on the teleprompter for "Maybe I'm Amazed." He would know, right?

If I'm not mistaken, in that scene, the roadie thought the line was 'Maybe I'm afraid of the way I need you' and Paul corrected him the last several words to read 'I leave you'...

SHE'S A WOMAN, ST. PETERSBURG 2003: I warn ya': It's another bad one:
Skip ahead to 00:56 Paul seemingly makes a joke during the flub -- "It's live!" he yells. -
(bump) Fogot how funny some of these are!

I remember him doing Yesterday at Raleigh, N.C. in the July of 1990 and he flubbed up the words and I was actually glad he did. Some of you around my age probably remember the entire Melly Vanelli scandal back then, the two guys who lipped synced everything they did live, won a grammy for some album, etc. It was a big scandal then. It was nice to know that Paul was real, mistakes and all.

The problem with Milli Vanilli wasn't the fact that they lipsynced live? lots of dance acts of that time were known to lip sync live... even Michael Jackson? but it was the fact that it wasn't even their voices on the album. It was a couple middle age guys that weren't as marketable so the producer, Frank Farian went ahead and put their picture on the album cover and the rest is history! (Note: I actually e-mailed Frank Farian a while back and he sent me his autograph from Europe... I thought it was kind of a cool novelty thing to have!) Anyway, the only time I remember Paul messing up the lyrics at a concert I attended was on opening night at Citi Field when he twice flubbed the lyrics of Calico Skies? one of my all time favorite songs! I remember thinking it was funny at the time and apparantly the guy who taped this video did too cause, right after each mistake, you can hear him laughing:
-
Thanks for the clarification on Milli. Didn't they strip them of their Grammy for their LP? I'll have to watch that Calico Skies video, thanks.

Yeah, they took away their grammy and then they tried making a comeback as "Rob & Fab", their real names. They recorded an album and performed on Arsenio Hall... the album was a huge flop and, from what I understand, copies of it are actually pretty valuable today. Rob died of an overdose in 1998 and Fab actually still performs today in small clubs around Europe and, from what I've heard, he's actually built up a small, yet loyal, fanbase.

So, Fab might be able to pull off a cover version of George's "When We Was Fab"
