WINGS FUN CLUB - recollections?

It's great that you have kept these early communications about the Fun Club I've still got all the cards that Sue sent and all the letters and merchandise sheets that were sent out too. I treasure everything to do with Club Sandwich and the Fun Club

yeah, same here. However useful the internet is,you can't beat being able to hold a genuine 34 year old Wings Fun Club newsletter, now held together with rusty staples.
-
You are absolutely right, Kestrel. I still like the paper as opposed to messages here that you can no longer get to.
-
I think I'm going to start trying to collect the old issues, pre 1982
-
I'm moving this weekend and I found a box marked Club Sandwich. I need to do an inventory so I don't go looking for ones I already have.
-
I've been through mine this morning and I have numbers 24 - 86. I guess the older ones will be harder to find This was the word search which I had printed: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v207/mccartney/wingsboard2.jpg

Anyone remember the Listen To What The Fans Said sections in the Club Sandwich. I've been re-reading through them again. I wondered if anyone here ever had any of their messages posted in that section

Sorting through my Wings Fun Club material I came across this letter which was sent out to folk showing interest in the club in 1973. Dear Friends This club is for you, whether you are interested in Wings music wise, fun wise or otherwise, my aim is to cater for your interest, and to keep Wings and you, their fans, in contact with each other, so you are all up to date on Wings activities. For your 50p membership fee you will receive a membership card and newsletter every four to six weeks. Services of the club will be: offers of pictures, T-shirts, badges, pens, posters and possibly other novelties. Queries on the group will be answered if at all possible - please remember to send a S.A.E. Sale, swop and wanted ads, of anything to do with Paul / Wings and pen pal lists will be printed free of charge in the newsletter. And club competitions will be held. Your opinions will always be welcome, and interesting letters will be published in the newsletter. If you do wish to join the club please complete the application form attached. Smile away Claire (taken over from Lucy). ------------------------------------------------------------ Wow,you sure got a lot of goodies for your 50p. You couldn't get half a cup of Starbucks coffee for that money nowadays. And staying on the subject of value for money, this is from just two years later: WINGS TO TOUR GREAT BRITAIN We are pleased to announce that Wings are to make their long awaited tour of Great bRitain, starting on 9th September, 1975. As it has been two years since Fun Club members have had the opportunity off seeing the band 'live', we wish to help members as much as possible to enable those who want to attend the concerts to do so. Tickets will be sold at the box office at each city, ranging in price from £1.00 to £2.50, and you should apply there for the tickets you want. We are also holding a small number of seats priced at £2.00 for any members who are unable to obtain a ticket from the box offices. As we will undoubtedly receive more requests for tickets than we can meet, tickets will be allocated by a draw. You must be a fully paid up member of the Wings Fun Club to enter our ticket draw, so if you are due to renew your membership, please do so now! ............................................................................. £1, £2, £2.50p tickets? Those were the days.

That's great that you've got those early letters! My communications only go back to around 82/83. And as you say the membership and ticket prices were unbelievable!! I agree, those were indeed the days
-
I thought there'd be more people on here who were in the fun club?
-
Me, too.
-
I've started looking round to try and catch up on the some of the older copies but it's difficult to find them now.
-
I've got lots of Club Sandwiches issues, and my eldest copy is from 1982 - the Tug Of War issue...I've also got most of the magazines that features the release of Paul's new albums as the main article: Pipes Of Peace, Press To Play, Flowers In The Dirt, Unplugged, Off The Ground, Paul Is Live and Flaming Pie. Although I've got most of the issues I've always wanted to buy (I got all of them after the club's closure in 199, there's one I've always been curious about: the number 1, which features an article on his Bill Black bass. My question: does anyobody have this one? I'd love to know more about it.

I received No.1 February/March 1977 issue of Club Sandwich on 10th March 1977. It was simply a large format 4 page inky newspaper style issue. The front cover (page 1) has the 'Heart break hotel' bass piccie you mention, plus Sue's Letter, a short piece about Linda doing the photographs for the paper and a short piece on Joe English's wedding. Inside cover (page 2) we have smal articles about Alan Crowder,Denny Laine's 'Hollydays' project, words to 'Soily' and pics of Linda celebrating her 35th birthday in Venice and of Paul balancing a piece of wood on his chin. Page 3 we have more pics.......a group shot of people involved in the first Buddy Holly Week lunch, the hippie couple in the Wings Over America tv commercial and Santa visiting the Macca kids. There's also a crossword. And finally on page 4,the rear cover, there's photos of Jimmy McCulloch in kilt holding the bagpipes.Denny and Jo-Jo,and Paul recording 'Baby Face' in New Orleans. There's also text about Jo-Jo opening a shop,a drawing of Paul at the piano, a 75/76 tour offer section (postcards, badges etc) plus the beginning of the dreaded 'Listen To What The Man Said' fans letter section. Actually the four letters included weren't too gushy....it got worse later on. So,there you go,thats the contents of the very first Club Sandwich. I think most club members at the time wished the Macs had stayed with the glossy covered booklets of the previous couple of years.

I was a member since around 1979. Got some back issues when I joined, dating back to 1977. I still have all but one of the issues (I gave one away). I was a member all through the 80's and a bit into the 90's. I got the russian album, which I had already bought for around £70 the week before from someone who had bought it in the USSR. I think I was able to get around the same price when i resold it. I had 108 N, which probably was for Norway. Never got any offers to attend UK events like the shooting of the Take It Away, even though I would gladly have flown over to attend. I used to be very envious of the UK members who were invited to things like these. I got postcards etc from the club, but I didn't have much correspondence with them. Every issue of Club Sandwich was a real treat. I also loved that Mark Lewisohn became involved, and started writing about the old (and new) promotional clips (or music videos, as they are now called). I went by MPL every time I was in London and begged for freebees, and usually I would get a postcard or a pin or something. Great memories...

Thanks for that. So there is no stories about getting the bass on that issue? It's a pity If, by any chance, you have the chance of scanning the mag, I'd love to see it! thanks again

Unfortunately, the only info is from the caption beneath the photo which says that the bass is Paul's favourite Christmas present from Linda, that it once belonged to Bill Black and that Paul plays it on 'Love In Song' and 'Cook Of The House'. As 'LIS' wa recorded in November 1974 I guess Paul received the bass at Christmas 1973. Unless it was an early present for Christmas 1974 as Linda couldn't find anywhere to hide the wretched thing? I wonder if she wrapped it up?

Sorry,I don't have a scanner.

They are great memories indeed. I too loved it when they discussed the old videos and promotional stuff.

There's just too much infomation available far too quickly these days. A lot of the mystique and the anticipation has gone. Oh for the good old days?

Are there any more Club Sandwich members here?
