Oh, and whilst there is no major discernible piano, I do think "Through Our Love" is a beauty. Afterthought: Actually, this is probably my fave Paul "ballad" of the 80's. With No More Lonely Nights, of course.
I had sort of forgotten that one. Love his vocal. I really liked "So Bad" from Pipes of Peace...same album. Just watched the video of that....Linda, Ringo, and ???Who are all those other musicians that seem to be playing/singing on that song?? Anyone know? :

Nice watching this one again. In the McCartney Years DVD's commentary, it's nice to hear Paul chuckle at Linda's hamming it up for the camera.

..and not stop mid beat and flash the peace sign or mouth the words "peace & love".

My latest fave would be My Valentine. Such a rich melody, kind of dark and haunting, too. I was really disappointed with the production and arrangement though. It felt so lame for such a great composition. In the big picture, Maybe I'm Amazed and For No One never fail to blow me away. Absolute genius!
I agree "My Valentine" is a great song, but not sure what you dislike about the arrangement. I think it's lovely.

Agreed, Very lovely arrangement. And there's a choice!!!

Did anyone mention Only Our Hearts? Thats a really great one! The whole of Ecce Cor Meum is really Paul's greatest love masterpiece when you come down to it!! Also Ocean's Kingdom was a beautiful Love story...

Well tastes do vary. Only Our Hearts is, to my ears, nice but not extraordinary. My Valentine is extraordinary.

Hmm, yeah, I really hate criticizing the musicians because I know they're all superstars in their field, and we've got God playing guitar on this track, too. I do like the performances in general throughout the album. But when I hear My Valentine, it sounds like a band that's timidly going through a first run-through of a song. You know, everyone's just getting a feel for the chords and melody, and it's very tentative. I think the song has great potential, and I wish it had been developed more. I was thinking of some references. In a way, this song makes me feel like it's in a musical territory somewhere between And I Love Her and A Taste of Honey. It even feels like something Paul might have written in 1964 (I mean that as a huge compliment). And I Love Her, as a gentle song, has some really interesting counterpoints in the arrangement. I feel like My Valentine needs a great guitar riff to open and anchor it like And I Love Her has. Clapton plays guitar on this song, and to look at his own history, I would consider Tears In Heaven as a great inspiration, too. It's a gentle, sad song, and there's amazing things going on in it's arrangement. Layers and layers of interesting counter-melodies. One more song I was thinking of as a reference, and this one might spoil the point I'm trying to make, lol. I was thinking of U2's cover of Day and Night. I know it's really HEAVY and a bit extreme. If you take away the drum track and listen to what the strings and synths are doing, it's really strong and interesting and kind of wonderfully weird, too. There's a lot of dissonance and tension going on in that arrangement. I'm not suggesting My Valentine should be as bombastic as Day and Night, but it's the way the notes and chords are augmented with the various other instruments/ tracks. It's taking a jazzy, sophisticated Cole Porter song, and making it even more interesting with their own sophisticated counter-melodies underneath it. My Valentine feels like it could have a TOUCH of the dark and haunting like Day and Night, but still within it's original light jazz setting. Anyways, that's enough rambling from me Whoops, mental dyslexia.....I meant Night and Day as the song. I'm travelling backwards through time.

Thanks for the explanation. All I can say is that I couldn't disagree more.

For me it's Only Our Hearts. IMO one of Paul's great love songs. I just prefer it to My Valentine which is also excellent .

My Soul - Nitin Sawhney & Paul McCartney
I long to know All your secrets I want to walk Through your fire Light up my eyes With your smile I was awakened By magic I was alone In this world Take me away from here Life spinning round At a blistering pace I've been shot From a gun To your final embrace My soul, your heart Two worlds Apart This life Is all we have How could this steal All these feelings How could they lie To this world A picture away From your smile Life spinning round At a blistering pace I've been shot From a gun To your final embrace My soul, your heart Two worlds Apart This life Is all we have One soul displaced One heart replaced Feelings defaced Invade our space No one left To give us Back our time We could climb Every mountain Swim to every sea When the all world Is asleep We can set Ourselves free My soul, your heart Two worlds Apart This life Is all we have Mmm Yeah, yeah We could climb Every mountain Swim to every sea When all the world Is asleep We can set Ourselves free We could climb Every mountain Swim to every sea When all the world Is asleep We can set Ourselves free My soul, your heart Two worlds Apart This life -

It really is a beautiful song, but this is one I wish we could go back and time and hear it sung with his younger voice -- not very young, but "Flaming Pie" era: with some maturity but still a fair amount of the old range and power intact.

Are you familiar with Nitin Sawhney? I clicked around a bit on youtube & she has a few indian sounding songs. Very pretty. One she flips back & forth between English & what I thought was Indian. (I wonder how she & Paul got hooked up.)

Calico Skies, I honestly can't think of anything more moving but I'm willing to listen again to the post-1997 work.
