I define classic as being both very popular & high quality. My Brave Face could be considered but it was such a minor hit even when it came out. I was listening to NMLN today on the radio, and the song gets better with time. I'm surprised it hasnt been covered yet by a major artist.

Not sure if it's his last classic (once upon a long ago was top 10 in 1987.. i'd definately consider that if classic means great song *and* a hit) - but it certainly IS a classic. I wish Paul would treasure this song, it was a huge hit, and is timeless, sang and played brilliantly, and it was the first Paul single i ever bought in October 1984 (age 9!)

Well, NMLN charted high , did well in sales. I am afraid I never heard it until I listened to Wingspan CDs. Now FourFive Seconds w/ Kanye West charted high. Myself, personally I think many of the songs from Flaming Pie are much better than NMLN, but that's my opinion. I think FP is brilliant. Actually brilliantly sad, as dear Linda was ill then.

take a sad song and make it better

Nah, not a classic. Decent song but nothing all that special. Sometimes classics take a while to be discovered. "It's a Wonderful Life" wasn't considered a classic till it started getting regular TV airings a couple decades after its original release. I like to think that "Somedays" and "Little Willow" (to pick 2 obvious examples) will someday be recognized as the classics they are.

No More Lonely Nights, Beautiful Night, and Calico Skies were the last songs that are up to par for me with anything he wrote as a Beatle (such as Yesterday, Here, There & Everywhere, I Will, etc.) There are other solo songs I love too, like Little Willow and Appreciate.

Completely agree. NMLN is my favorite solo song, along with Maybe I'm Amazed, because it does hold up to his best work. It's a shame he hasn't embraced the song in his shows. Although I was tickled to hear it in the pre-show music for the Detroit show last October.

it has very high vocal notes plus great solo by Dave Gilmour

I agree.. it was the last classic in the definition of (very popular & high quality) he made a lot high quality ballad songs like "That Day is Done, Calico sky, Beautiful nights" but was not that famous or popular, only to Paul fans!

I was also thinking that was the reason he has never performed the song live - out of his vocal range. Or, it brings up bad memories about the film!

NMLN is typical of his 80's pap. Better than most of his 80's rubbish, but only slightly. That period from 82 through 87 was his nadir. In an attempt to move with the trends instead of setting them, he totally lost his way. Thankfully he recovered. I remember hearing Back On My Feet for the first time and thinking, the title is spot on! His first decent song in ages. ...and that was the start of hauling himself out of the mire. But make no mistake, sure he was still Paul McCartney, but during that period he was pretty much a musical lightweight.
