This is the point where my head explodes. This internet opinion piece is talking about who should have closed the Olympics opening ceremonies: Paul or One Direction. Seriously. http://celebs.gather.com/viewArticle.action?articleId=281474981517407
Seriously do we think Olympic stadium would have broken out in a One Direction song yesterday? It seems ridiculous that any of this stuff is taken seriously.
from where i was watching the whole olympic stadium only gave a luke warm response to 'hey jude' anyway.....part of the problem was that macca came on way too late at the end of a long night after athletes paraded around a track for 2 hours....forgetting what anyone thinks of maccas performance [lets not go there again ] i thought the scheduling was bizzarr and wrong......'one diection' im not even sure who there are,but im sure they are a modern band ,so YES they should have been on instead of macca...time for the old brigade to move on ...this is not their time anymore
You're not sure who they are and that's why you're saying they should have been on instead of Macca. I hate their music and I know a LOT of people that turn off the telly when they appear. The old brigade haven't moved on because musicians like One Direction are trash. People from latinoamerica are still laughing for the "One Erection" video (one person making fun of their fans). One Direction (for me) is like a band with 5 biebers.
LOL a manufactured pop band by Simon Cowell.. I've heard them.. typical boy band stand there & sing songs written by someone else...
I'm sure the songs will go like "I'll never let you go/I can't live without you" and kinds of emotional abuse stuff as usual. :
hahahahhahaha right!

wix im pretty sure my spelling is bad..no need to point it out,it makes you look like a a knitpicker'...and that word has extra meaning on here.... 'one direction' im sure i have no clue who they are,im pretty sure i would hate their music however im pretty sure they speak to the worlds youth far more than 70 year old passed his best mccartney....im sorry folks but i stand by my point...time for macca and his fellow baby boomer legends to move along...for such events.....who knows this boy band 'one direction' might evolve and shock you all.after all 'the beatles' too where nothing more than a pop music 'boy band' of their day..of course they evolved ,but hey they where given the chance to evolve..........
The first verse of One Direction's biggest hit ("What Makes You Beautiful") You're Insecure, Don't know what for, You're turning heads when you walk through the door, Don't need make up, To cover up, Being the way that you are enough ...we see simple rhymes and relatively common vocabulary. Which, is how the early beatles were written in some cases but, The early Beatles songs were written by The Beatles. This song has three writers, none of which are in the band. Nor, does the band play any instruments on the recording. The first verse of Hey Jude... Hey Jude, Don't make it bad, take a sad song, and make it better, remember to let her into your heart, then you can start, to make it better. ...still, some simplistic rhyming in this first verse. But just this verse has more depth than One Direction's album. "Take a sad song and make it better"...I love that, and I don't know why. There's something deep about, like a light at the end of the tunnel type thing. And the imagery..."let her into your heart". I can visualize a beautiful scene in my head. Of a man accepting a wife, or a boy forgiving his mother, or any other relationship of a man and women you could create for yourself. One Direction's verse, is about a girl that is hot and "doesn't know it" (havne't met one of them yet...) It is not timeless. It is not always relevant nor will it excede the barriers of time, age, religion, and location on this earth like "Hey Jude" will. "Hey Jude", written and recorded by Paul McCartney, like it should be. The man and his band doing all the work, and George Martin the sole producer. One Direction's producers are the three guys that wrote the song. The Beatles were not a boy band, they did more than sing and dance.

Tony Bennett's still doing great and he's just turned 86! Than again he's not the same type of singer.
I was thinking of him and Leonard Cohen the other day when the discussion of whether Paul should retire from concerts came up, actually...two older guys who can still bring it live, but yes, a different singing style.

Yes he is!!! he can belt them out .. even tho at times he is a bit off key and can't hold a note more 10 seconds... still very great tho..

One direction are a JOKE to music.
That little girl was singing me some of their "songs" the other day... This is the face I had on when she said how they're the best musicians in the world.
They would have to actually be musicians first :

And there it is. I refuse to call them a boy band, as they're as far from a band as one can get. I refer to them and their ilk as groups, not bands.

Are we really comparing The Beatles to One Direction? I can take the "Paul vocals are crap" and even "Dylan should continue touring but not Paul" but that comparation will force my mind to open up even more... What about the Jonas Brothers, weren't they supposed to be the next Beatles? I guess they should compare One Direction to the Jonas Brothers or so... Not me.

None of this matters, years from now history will prove Paul McCartney's place in music history along side John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Frank Sinatra, Brian Wilson, Ray Davies, Rodgers and Hart, Beethoven, Mozart, Elvis Presley, Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Bing Crosby, etc. These same people will be saying when Paul's no longer here how much they loved his music....

Paul will take his place slightly above those artists. People who are in the music business, whatever their age, know that Macca is the man. They are the people who are qualified to discuss his talent. Not people who jump on the bandwagon.

No, we aren't comparing. We are trashing One Erection... sorry, One Direction.

You know that they don't know what are those pretty faces singing. Also most of latin american girls even know the lyrics and sing like "hkgdfadhsgñgfdkjhaflkdsjkljhfdlaa", I mean, they don't know English and sing stupidities

Definitely, the ones i've listed are amongst those who I think will stand the time over manufactured X Factor acts and boy bands. I think Paul will definitely be the most important figure in music history years from now although it will be in association with John and the Beatles.

Paul is definitely one of our greatest musicians, ever. I would place Mozart at the top of any list, however, followed closely by another incredible and underrated composer, Macsback.
