Can somebody summarize why this rare, mono version is so superior to the standard release? Are the mixes that different?

My understanding of Mono mixes is that the sounds are coming from different places in the mix. they're all mashed onto one track and blown out the middle speaker. It seems the tracks/intruments can be equalized differently in stereo, and certain instruments can be more (or less) pronounced when heard in Mono. though I can't really provide any good examples.. I've never cared much whether I had mono mixes, doesn't make much difference in my book. Though I've heard Revolution is one of those songs where Mono is the way to go.

its like trying to catch the sun on the water..

But I've read that Ram Mono is a wholly different mix, though. I wonder what the story is behind it.

Audi, To the best of my knowledge, the mono mix was a promo only special mix done by Paul for th AM radio market which was still prominent at the time. Some tracks don't sound too different and others (Dear Boy, Smile Away) really benefit from the mono treatment. If you look on you tube you can find some of these tracks i'm sure. But it was a never commercially released mix, radio promo only which is why it is so rare. Hope this helps.

A bunch of folks in the Steve Hoffmann forum are absolutely raving about how great the new Mono vinyl of Ram is: http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?t=286546&page=14 Here are some of the comments about the mono vinyl on that forum:

Quote: Originally Posted by child of nature Still cannot get over the tremendous sound of the mono disc! I'm not a vinyl person at all but it does make me wonder what I'm missing.

Just downloaded my flac files (from topsin) for the Mono LP and Bonus Tracks. When I try to convert from flac to wav I get a message telling me that the files are "password protected". Anyone else had this? It's just the Bonus Tracks I'm really after, frustrating not being able to get them!

Just had on Smile Away on the mono CD and the guitar sounds MUCH nastier, downright raunchy! It's more up front on the fade out at the end. Gives the song more of a menacing feel, which is great~!

So I've seen the Ram mono reissue in a couple record stores now, and whats with the white album cover/sleeve? is that honestly the packaging?? Its a dumb reason but I might have bought it had it had better looking packaging... cause I do love RAM, and am curious to hear it, particularly on vinyl. whats the deal, is the packaging really all white?

yep, it's just got Ram-mono in what looks like ink writing, but is just printed on. the sleeve is also blank. maybe they made it like that as a sort of doodle-cover. or maybe they just couldn't think of anything.... :

The mono mix is also included in the Deluxe Edition. The sleeve is white, to make it look like a replica of the original promo album, I guess. As far as I know, some AM stations made their own fold-down monomixes for broadcasting. When doing this certain sounds may get "cancelled". If i.e. a cowbell is placed exactly the same place in the right channel and the left channel, it will disappear when the channels are combined into one. Thus making certain songs sound different on AM stations and FM stations.
