The Paul McCartney Picture Thread

This website claims Paul can play 54 instruments, and gives a complete list of them. They wrote that he played violin on "Flowers in the Dirt" and cello for "Chaos and Creation". I wonder if he really did record with those instruments, or just pretended to play them for the music videos?

Paul plays the violin keyboard on 'Ou Est Le Soleil' ( on Flowers In The Dirt) and indeed the cello on 'At The Mercy' ( on Chaos And Creation In The Backyard).

Wow, that's amazing! He is so talented, and knows instinctively how to play musical instruments without having any formal training. That's a real gift, and not many people can do that!
Edited to add: When you wrote "violin keyboard" did you mean violin AND keyboard? was just wondering what a violin keyboard could be, lol

Scroll down and you’ll see it says “violin keyboard” whatever the heck that is!

This may help:
Thanks for this information, Nancy! I had no idea there was a "keyboard" setup like that for the violin. I used to play violin when I was in grade school, and there were charts like that that they put under the string bridge to help us learn. I wonder if that's what they're talking about... like maybe he was playing violin with a keyboard chart under the strings, so he'd know where to place his fingers. If that's that case, seems like "violin keyboard" shouldn't be listed as a different kind of instrument, he's just playing the violin. Only difference is that he was using a visual aid to help him, but it wouldn't be a different instrument.
Below is a photo of him playing cello, from much earlier than "Chaos and Creation" of course... he always seems to be fascinated with different musical instruments, and sounds they can produce. In some interviews done at his home in the English countryside you can see he has a lute-harp in the background, which was a popular instrument in the 18th & 19th centuries... he could have known how to play that too! (I believe we discussed about his lute-harp in another thread.)
Link to below photo is in website I posted above, that lists all the musical instruments Paul can play.

This thing must be what he was playing:

Interesting! But this looks like a fairly recent invention. It's possible there was something similar when he did Flowers in the Dirt..

He also plays a bit of french horn in Friends to Go. But he's the first to admit that he doesn't really play those instruments, at least not in the sense that he plays guitar, bass or piano. I remember an interview at the time Chaos came out in which Paul talked about the french horn, saying roughly, "I don't know about playing -- I can get a few notes out of it."
Of course, that's a few notes more than I can get out of any instrument.

Yeah, you’re right. Well, there’s a question for You Gave Me The Answer if anyone knows how to get in and submit it!
ETA!! I was able to get in and ask what exactly is a “violin keyboard” that he played on Ou Est Le Soleil! Now if only a 2nd miracle occurs and he answers!

That would be so great if he could answer that for you! Seems like the perfect kind of question to ask, he always likes to answer questions about the music and lyrics in his songs.

Where is the Sun?.... One of Paul's worst.
I love him, but Ou Est the Soleil? sits amongst his worst, with Loup and Pretty Little Head.
So, I don't expect him to remember or acknowledge those.

I don't think he thinks badly of any of those songs. In fact, before Egypt Station was released, he had Ou Est le Soleil playing as the first song on the home page of this site!

I seriously doubt that Paul has anything to do with which songs are playing.

Paul with the money he just made in the last minute.
(Wasn’t this from an appearance on some U.K. show?)

^ Yeah, maybe some short comedy sketch?

There was a TV show he was on once, where son James was with him, and he answered telephone calls, and seems like there was a quiz or something... will have to check YouTube for that video to see if that's when the photo you posted was taken... seems like James was about 10 years old, so it would have been about 1987-1988.

Thanks, Oobu! Thought it was a cute photo too, and thought his hat was interesting! He's always been able to wear hats well. When he did the "Say say say" video with Michael Jackson, he got to wear quite a few cool looking ones.
