The Paul McCartney Picture Thread

Maggie McGivern was Marianne Faithfull's baby's nanny, not a Liddypool prossie (LOL). Yeah she was pretty. I saw pix of her and Paul cavorting around having fun (behind Asher's back) and was startled. Didn't realize he had several "secret girlfriends" but should have known. I don't see how they had time to have a "serious relationship" while he was supposed to be serious with Jane, all that time... Dot Rhone (who he dumped for Jane) was cute too. Even Francie Schwartz was cute, petite with short dark hair. There must have been a cast of thousands (LOL), well, not really, things seemed to have slowed down some for the Fabs in that area once they stopped touring. Must have felt odd to go from thousands of groupies on tour to dwindle down to mostly just some Apple Scruffs hanging around outside hoping for a glimpse. Though I'm sure they got more action even then than we realize. ops: :

Hi, guys. It's my first post on this forum after lurking for a while. The subject of "Martha My Dear" caught my attention because I always wondered who Paul was referring to in this song. I would love it if it was actually about his beloved dog because that would be very amusing, but that doesn't seem likely (even though many times I secretly believe it is about the dog while listening to it). That being said, I don't think the song is about Maggie. For one, I'm not sure how serious their relationship was having seen each other on/off for about 2-3 years, and while he was with Jane (and many other girls as well). Also, they never had a falling out. I think Maggie just stopped hearing from Paul soon after Linda became a permanent fixture and wouldn't see him again until the night before his and Linda's wedding. So a lot of the lyrics don't match up with the nature of Maggie and Paul's relationship. I think this song is more about Jane than anyone else, and it might be about Linda a bit too. Though I'm not sure where she would fit in because I don't think they were very serious when he wrote/recorded this song.

Welcome to the board TitaniumGirl. I am impressed that such a topic would make you join up. haha...

Thank you!! And yes Not that there weren't other topics that have caught my eye! I just felt like I wanted to add something to this one; I'm not much of a person that posts, more of a lurker haha.

Maybe like the pics of him in his trunks? hahaha! Seems to be popular in this thread. It's fine to lurk...no problem at all. But hopefully you'll post more often.

Hi Titanium Girl, thanks for posting! I agree with you that Martha My Dear was most likely written for Jane... the words seem to fit. I think after their breakup he realized that it was for the best, especially after he met Linda, and tried to put his feelings about that into a song.

If I would have been around at the time of the Apple Scruffs, I probably wouldn't have been a "Groupie Scruff", I'd have been a "Cleaning Scruff" I can picture Paul putting his brows together and pointing at me and saying "Yes, open the gate, and let that one in, she'll do the jobs that no one else wants to do, like cleaning the dog poo off me boots and making sure the loo gets a good scrubbing..."

Just an FYI, Paul broke up with Dot long before he met Jane in April 1963. And according to Francie's book, while she was living with Paul in the spring and summer of 1968 (while Jane was acting out of town) there were all kinds of half-naked girls running around the house. And she said one time Paul made her stay in the car while he "visited" another girl. Things didn't slow down for Paul! (well, not until mid-Sept. 1968 when Linda arrived and they were only apart during his incarceration in Japan)

Did you read the story (link) I posted earlier about Maggie? They were together off and on from 1966 to early Sept. 1968. Then she saw Paul 2 days before his wedding to Linda. Here is the link: http://sentstarr.tripod.com/beatgirls/mcgiv.html It's an interesting read! Oh, and Paul and Linda were serious when Martha My Dear was recorded on Oct. 4, 1968. Lady Leslie's info was correct. The song was probably really about Jane. Remember, a lot of the White Album was written when they were all in India. Birthday was for Linda as her birthday was Sept. 24th (she had arrived in London mid-Sept. 196 And I always thought I Will was for Linda.

He would have loved you! Francie complained about having to clean up Martha and her poop!

Yes! I have read that before and I definitely found it very interesting. I knew Paul was unfaithful to Jane but thought they were all one night affairs or flings that lasted while the Beatles were on tour. So I was shocked to read Paul actually had a (sort of?) relationship while he was with Jane with another woman for two years. But afterwards I wasn't as surprised Thanks for the correction! The reason I wasn't thinking it was serious was because I remembered about the trip Paul and Maggie took during the Linda period. But after going through that link I see they took the trip in September, when Linda wasn't a constant in Paul's life yet. And you say they became serious in October. So I stand corrected! That was another thing I never could exactly work out: when did Paul and Linda become an official couple? Because their lives overlapped quite a bit starting 1967. Was Martha My Dear written while in India? Because if it was mainly about Jane but it was written during the India trip, that doesn't quite add up if Paul is telling the girl to not forget about him. That is very interesting about Birthday! I never wondered to look up what inspired Paul to write Birthday, didn't know it was about Linda. And I think I Will is about Linda too. Now here's a woman he's seen here and there but never imagined she would be "his person", and so he wrote that song.

I remember reading that! I wouldn't have minded at all! It was Paul's dog after all... would have been an honor to take care of Martha, and I love dogs anyway. When Linda arrived on the scene and saw the house in disarray, she immediately got things organized and cleaned, and made sure both Martha had food (she was nearly out) and that Paul's refrigerator was stocked Very sensible of her I must say.... She created a good home environment for him. Maybe that's why Linda stayed, and the others didn't

In one interview, Paul said that Linda once told him, "I could make you a nice home." I'm sure that was part of the appeal she had for him. P.S. Paul had a cleaning lady, but she didn't do the grocery shopping. Linda said that he was out of dog food and the only thing in the fridge was some sour milk and moldy cheese! She had to call someone (Paul was at Abbey Road recording) to get groceries!

Paul was talking in the Wingspan interview about the conditions in his house (with the sour milk and moldy cheese, etc) when Linda arrived on the scene, (see 5:33 at this link
) and said (at 9:30 on same link) that when she told him she wanted to make him a good home he knew that was it. I was wondering if Paul had a cleaning lady before he and Linda got together she probably had her work cut out her for at that time, being a bachelor pad and all... After he and Linda got married and had a family, they had a housekeeper, but Linda did all the cooking and looking after the kids herself, with Paul of course I think this is the same coat Paul wore in the Winter scenes of "Help!" He gave an interview once where he said he gave the coat to Linda, and that she liked wearing it. That was before they became anti-fur activists of course.... -

Paul & Pete Paul, Rita and Tom. A few years later. Paul looks more like Paul 50 years later than Tom looks like Tom 30 years later.
