The "Ram" Remaster Thread

Michelley:
I don't think it's fair to compare Ram and KOTB, although I think the first is excellent and the latter is quite good. I'll take the review out recently from Jazz Times on the quality of KOTB and Paul's voice:
McCartney fans will likely be perplexed by Sir Paul?s ninth-inning foray into the Great American Songbook. But aficionados of deftly crafted vocal jazz will appreciate this as an exemplary exercise in reinvention. McCartney successfully strips away the pop-star patina, embracing a quiet elegance that mirrors the interpretive brilliance of Fred Astaire. Yes, the voice has frayed (McCartney is nearing 70), but its well-traveled raggedness is integral to its effectiveness, echoing the tender vulnerability that so gorgeously defined Maxine Sullivan?s career-twilight renaissance in the mid-?80s.
That said, I'm still stewing over that lousy Ram review from that f?*!@n# Q Magazine. A more apt comparison, I think, is between Ram and the Beach Boys' Smile reissue. Not long ago, Q raved about the Smile album but then it turns around and slights Ram -- when the two records are similar in both offering inventive arrangements and vocals. There's a huge double standard in Q's reviews of both albums that is just plain unfair (to Paul, of course).
Much better comparission Michelley.....but don't make me choose between Smile and Ram....'cuz most of you will not like my choice
It's absolutely your right (pick Ram) to prefer one (pick Ram) over the other. Personally I would choose Ram but I like Smile quite a bit. What I don't get -- at all -- is raving about how great Smile is and dissing Ram.

Agreed. Both are stellar pieces of art, and while very...eerily similiar, no two snowflakes are alike.

Alert: For anyone interested in the special edition of Ram, Amazon is now offering it for pre-order for only $11.88. That's the lowest I've seen it and I doubt it will go much lower. http://www.amazon.com/RAM-Special-Edition-Paul-McCartney/dp/B007L96VCY/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1335289693&sr=1-1 Fyi.

one is an album full a majestic magic sung by a sublime voice and harmonies that defined an era. the other is a bunch of boring tedious sluggish pisswater sung by a voice on its last legs....
Don't hold back LazyD, tell us what you really think!
thanks nancy, looking back perhaps i was being slightly dramatic there!

My eyes only took in the price and was thinking about the deluxe edition! The official site better hurry up with their ram pre-orders. Amazon uk dropped the deluxe version by nearly £30 the other day so its coming down.

Just got back from reading both the Q magazine and Mojo magazine reviews of RAM. Where as Q gave it 2 stars Mojo have given it 4 stars and called it "quintessentially McCartney". Reading the Q review they gave more time to the packaging than to the great music, not even mentioning the delights of Dear Boy, The Back Seat Of My Car, Uncle Albert/ Admiral Halsey, Ram On and Monkberry Moon Delight, just grudging praise for Too Many People and Another Day, which isn't even on the album just a extra with the album. He basically rubbished it because he hates Smile Away and Long Haired Lady.As a fan of the album i'm obviously going to favour Danny Eccleston's 4 star review in Mojo, but at least he looked at the music and took time to review it properly, Ram On, Uncle Albert/ Admiral Halsey and Dear Boy being his favourite songs on RAM. The only thing with music magazines is were the reviews edited down, they could come out unbalanced either way?

Excellent!!!! I hope Uncut Magazine gives it a good review, too. Uncut is advertising an interview with Paul in the June issue and I'm hoping they wouldn't interview him only to rip on Ram in the review. ops: We'll see. But 4 stars from Mojo, I'll take it!! Screw Q. I'm never buying that crap magazine again. You mess with my favorite record, you mess with me. Not surprisingly, Amazon had the record at No. 102 but since they dropped the price to $11, it's now at No. 49. If Paul/MPL would price these records appropriately, they'd sell well.

What's the difference between a special edition and a delux edition?
-
Okay, first complaint and I haven't even laid finers or eyes on my delux edition yet. the digital version has two extra songs that aren't on any other versions. I hate digital only crap. You get to keep it only as long as you have your computer and computers are finite. way more finite then an outside source of information.

You can check on Amazon. The $11 special edition is 2 CDs. The $90 Deluxe set has 4 CDs, 1 DVD, a book and other stuff.

I think if you buy songs on itunes it stays on your account even if you loose your file you can reload the songs you purchased from itunes. I just hope we can buy those two songs separately. I've ordered the deluxe package from Amazon

By the way, if anyone sees the new issue of Uncut Magazine, could you let us know what the review for Ram said? The UK music magazines for this month won't arrive in the U.S, until next month!

You can (eventually) buy those 2 extra songs from iTunes. If you buy the deluxe from pm.com you can also get them (free I think) from them. Is that right?

UA/AH was a real slow burner for me but I love it now! Sounding good and that's no doubt a pretty low quality stream.
