Just saw the British Official Charts: Wings Over America is No. 36! Here's how the WOA chart position compares to the chart positions on the UK charts of Paul's other reissues. Band on the Run Reissue charted the highest: No. 17. Ram: No. 41 McCartney: No. 88 McCartney II: No. 108 Here's how Paul's previous reissues did on the Billboard 200: Band on the Run: No. 29 Ram: No. 24 McCartney: No. 50 McCartney II: No. 82
Wings Over America is No. 22 on Billboard this week!
VeryVery cool!
yup paul still has it
*When you consider the remastered WOA has next to "no" promotion/publicity, hitting in at #22 is very good. Stopping at my local convenience store every morning for coffee, I always check the New York/Philadelphia newpapers and the national papers (i.e. USA Today and Wall Street Journal). I haven't seen any article/review on WOA. I would think that USA Today might still run a prominent article about Paul at some point (pop-rock critic, Edna Gunderson) tying his tour and the WOA Rerelease. Maybe the fact that he is appearing in Brooklyn this weekend, might generate some publicity. Maybe WOA might have "legs" over the next few weeks also with the release of the Rockshow DVD. Since Rockshow is so good, it might cause additonal CD Sales especially considering that WOA is only $14.99 Hopefully, the younger generations (born in the 70's and beyond) will hear WOA or see Rockshow and get into one of the greatest live albums/concerts ever.
I'm not sure where you get the "next to no promotion" idea. If you search Google News for the phrase "Wings Over America" you get over 1,600 hits. And rumor has it that he's touring and playing a few tunes from this album. Touring absolutely helps boost Paul's album sales when he tours with an album to promote, and this tour it's WOA.

The horn section in Wings were great...how come he can't bring horns along now?
This was a comment that "Lady Madonna" made in another thread about Rockshow. I brought it here because it relates to the WOA reissue. I think the horns in Long and Winding Road are particularly effective and make it my favorite version of that song. And of course the horns are amazing in Silly Love songs. But I just read a review of the WOA reissue in Consequence of Sound that, while it gave the album 4 stars (!!!!), said the horns made the album sound dated. http://consequenceofsound.net/2013/06/album-review-paul-mccartney-and-wings-wings-over-america-reissue
It?s fascinating to hear just how these sounds have dated. McCartney?s ambitions to meld classical composition with pop sensibilities are slathered across these performances in a way interpreted critically to be unfettered by what he thought were Phil Spector?s overbearing string arrangements. At times, the auxiliary section can sound new age or disco-lite, a Chicago color that just reeks of the mid ?70s. Then again, despite having seen McCartney perform a number of these songs live in the last few years, I?m one of the young people this release was almost certainly not directed toward.
So I guess to this "young" reviewer, the horns make WOA a period piece -- stuck in the 70's rather than a timeless album. I kind of agree. When I listen to Ram, I hear a timeless album that sounds like it could have been made this year. But listening to WOA, to me, it does sound like the late 70's. It takes you back, not forward. Not that there's anything wrong with that, since the same is true of many other albums. What do others think?

haha i was waiting for this respons and totally agree

RAM takes me back, not forward.

Got Rockshow today...that's my evening sorted!
-
Remember many of these younger people aren't familiar with real live music, so when they do hear it, it very well may sound dated to them because they've never really listened to real music!
-
got to go looking for it tommorrow have the original vinly somehere
-
I think live instruments over synthesised sounds will always be real and not dated in my book. Problem these days that anyone under 30 is so used to computers doing everything that real instruments are seen as archaic.

I'd get horns and strings over keyboards imitating horns and keyboards any day. Call me "old fashioned" but that's the way I rock my boat

DON'T buy at Barnes & Noble! I bought it there just because I knew they are pretty good about carrying the re-issues and I didn't want to wait for it to be shipped to me. I paid $23 after tax for the standard edition. What a stooge I am! ops: Oh well, at least I have the album!
target was selling it for $11.99 for the standard edition
-
My Rock Show BluRay came today, a day early. Probably won't have time to really check it out until the weekend though.
-
My Rockshow just shipped

Bruce, I'm was speaking more of the traditional "print" publicity and promotion. I haven't seen much, if anything, on WOA through the normal Print media. Conversely, every magazine/newspaper I see has articles, reviews on John Fogerty's new CD with other artists (mainly country) dueting on his famous songs. I guess it has to do with the fact that "reissues" don't warrant reviews from the traditional channels. Fogerty's album has garnered articles/reviews in USA Today, People, Parade, all the local newpapers where I live (Philly and NY) and many others I'm sure. Maybe Paul's people have it right and the way you market/sell music today (CD's and DVD's) is 90% through the Internet anyway. HItting #22 for a remaster is pretty darn good. Just a little surprised that one of the best "live CD's" off all time being remastered and it is Macca is not getting more of a newpaper/national magazines etc. buzz. And your right, the fact that Paul is touring is helping the sales of WOA on its own.

#22? Wow!
-
Disappointed with the 5.1 mix on the Rockshow Blu Ray. The 2.0 mix sounds much clearer.

I agree the 5.1 mix could be better, like most fans the lack of backing vocal volume is puzzling and Jimmy's guitar solos seem lower in the mix too. The picture quality is very good considering the age of the film, but i think the 5.1 mix on the Rockshow McCartney Years portion sounds better to me.

And of course the promotion continues. Apparently Paulie did a small-scale U.S. TV gig Weds. night.

The remastered CDs sound way better than the Rockshow Blu-ray. The Blu-ray picture is very good, but the music sounds better on the CDs.
-
ADDICTED "TIME TO HIDE" from "WINGS OVER AMERICA" gets better and better in my mind...and ears, too. And eyes through the DVD of "Rockshow!" Love that version, originally from "WINGS' AT THE SPEED OF SOUND"

YES!! That is the one with the Paul bassline that gives me...well, you fill in the blank!! ops:
