oh yeah! Mine just arrived!!! Venus & Mars/Rockshow...YES! This is how Paul should have opened the show. (I know about the Kittay factor) but OMG COOL. Long hair at Madison Square...oh yeah.....lovin those satin pants!
What do you mean by this? Just curious
She's referring to the myth that Mademoiselle Kitty is Linda...but I don't believe that.
Why not, may I ask?
I always took that portion of the song as Paul mocking the heavy metal arena rockers of the time and their erroneous groupies...ala Mademoiselle Kitty....sounds a bit...uhh "prostitute-ish" to me.
Wix, I swear I read somewhere that Paul said "Mme. Kitty" was Linda.

I just started listening to the CDs in my car today--LOVING the sound! Cranked it up super loud!

Got the deluxe package the other day. It's simply beautiful. And so darn heavy. 3 quick things: 1) for those complaining about the price. Yes, it's pricey but I work in publishing in NYC and know how expensive it is to just produce a simple 4 color hardcover book (even if you print it in china). I am astounded at the quality and intricacy involved here for the price point. I have no idea how they had it come in so cheap. Really. This set, if you have the extra money, is a steal. 2) did anyone notice that the songwriting credits were flipped again? In the deluxe package they have two pages of credits in the Tour Itinerary book and the Beatles songs are listed as by Paul McCartney and John Lennon! I don't know where my old WOA cd's are, but were they listed that way then? Or on the vinyl? 3) how about that reproduction of mccartney's notes figuring out what the set list was going to be!! Is that what that page is? i sort of cant tell. If so we missed out on a 1976 version of I saw her standing there, Eleanor Rigby, I'm Down, Tomorrow, Got To Get You Into My Life, Treat Her Gently...it goes on and on. Some clarity there would help. It's def. macca's handwriting. Any guesses anyone?

I agree about the price. I wondered why it was more expensive than the others but now I see why. Great attention to details and materials - sooo very impressed! It's going to take me weeks to get through everything (especially since I have company for the next 11 days). The whole package is a real feast for all the senses (well, I think I'll resist tasting any of the materials although it may be tempting ).

Did you see the pic of Paul smacking open a pinata at his birthday party? Can anyone identify what was in said pinata? Looks like pens, cigs or joints.
-
Spirits of Ancient Egypt kicks alot more than the album version. They are red hot on that.

Agreed! How about that amazing vocal on Call Me Back Again? I found so many subtleties on the lead vocal that I didn't remember ever really hearing before. It is a dynamic performance.

The Best Buy deal was simply perfect for us working stiffs. I was amazed at the quality of WOA; what a remastering job! But, the bonus CD of Wings Over San Francisco was just superb, but now I want the complete Cow Palace concert. Pauls' interplay with the audience is so missing from WOA; the tunes on the bonus are so 'funky'; Let Me Roll It and Lady Madonna blast out of my speakers. It was 1976 all over again!!
-
It's the sound of the crowd that you can hear, it's electric and very warm.

Really enjoying the remastered Wings Over America CD in my car. A couple of early things that stand out for me so far: 1) yes, Spirits of Ancient Egypt is a real standout. Never got into this song before but now I am 2) Love all of Side one 2) My Love - Obviously, a big hit single for Paul and a song that Paul has played countless times on his later tours. My Love is a great Pop song that unfortunately has a double edge sword for Paul much like Let Em In and Silly Love Songs. Rock critics tend to blast them as lightweight and they put Paul in a Schlocky light compared to John and other great rock artists. I disagree with them as I think it shows Paul's great versatilitybut I have to admit I was much more anxious to hear the other songs on WOA. After hearing My Love a few times, my opinion has totally changed. This version is by far Paul's best, including the studio cut on Red Rose Speedway. Instead of smaltz, he turns My Love into a bluesy, soulful treat. I love the part where Jimmy is starting to finish up the guitar solo and Paul jumps in at just at the right moment and does his "whoa" thing. The ending also is classic Macca bluesy vocals. Actually, his vocals throughtout My Love are teriffic. When I first got into music and the Bealtles, it was Paul who, for me, made the ballad "cool". I'm thinking of songs like "And I Love You, PS I Love You and I'll Follow the Sun". He does the same thing here with My Love. Anywone else feel the same about this My Love version.

Okay, Got the standard edition yesterday and listened to the whole thing non stop. Joe English on the drums is just excellent, without a doubt he is the best drummer McCartney ever had. I actually heard rolls and fills I never noticed before. I also noticed that you can really hear when he hits the cymbals, the crashes really help highlight the songs. Now for the Rockshow blu-ray.
I noticed the same on the copy of Rockshow!!!

BJ Conlee, yes I absolutely love the WOA version of My Love! Since you like McCartney's more soulful version, let me share with you another version that is even more soulful. Walter Williams is one of the lead singers for the legendary soul group the O'jays. He has a new album out titled Exposed and it's also known believe it or not as Get Your Foot Off My Cadillac, the point is, he does an absolutely scorching very soulful version of My Love, I promise you if you listen to it, you will love it, give it a try.
-
I definitely agree about Joe, the remaster really brings out his excellence as a drummer, and all the subtle fills you could never hear before. I really like Abe too, but Joe was the best! I also love the WOA version of The Long and Winding Road with the brass section, imo the best version of this song ever. Love this album, and really get a kick out of the bonus disc at the Cow Palace which he let out "as it was" with warts and all. You can really hear how much they "polished" the released version of WOA when you compare it to this disc.

It says "P.McCartney/J. Lennon" on the original vinyl LPs too!

Yes, the WOA arrangement of "Long and Winding Road" is absolutely the definitive version! It's really a shame he's never returned to this arrangement.

I finally got my copy today and am listening to it now! It initially came on Thursday but the package required signature confirmation, and as I was away at work I had to wait until today to pick it up at the post office. Then I had to wait until I got off work today to actually open and listen to it... I'm up to "Maybe I'm Amazed" on the album now. I saw Rockshow a couple of weeks ago when it was playing here, so the set list and songs are still pretty fresh in my mind. It sounds *so good*! I spent about 10 minutes after opening the package just barely glossing over all the components, and everything is so gorgeous! This is an incredible value for what you get, really! I'm glad that Venus & Mars and Wings At The Speed of Sound are up next to be remastered...listening to this album is getting me very hungry to listen to those!

bought me the standard edition because the deluxe one is a bit toooo expensive. anyway. first point, it´s not done like the previous ones, so it looks cheaper in between the others. next thing is, why is it labeled as paul mccartney & wings. the original was a wings only album, though the band was wings? hm.... anyway, the best buy thing is a great solution to get the other live tracks... looking forward to vienna!!!

I guess the marketing guys were concerned that there are potential customers out there who don't realise (or have simply forgotten) that Paul McCartney was once a member of Wings? Live audio albums bore me so I'm not bothering with this release but I am looking forward to the Rockshow blu-ray.

I'm the opposite, actually...I love live albums but live concert DVDs bore me...I buy them but I'd be lying if I said I watched them more than 1 or 2 times over the course of many years.
